Pigface - Reckless Records 1992
Right before the 1992 Fook tour, Pigface did an in-store performance at Reckless Records in Chicago (at this time it was the only Reckless in Chicago in its original location on Broadway Ave.). Keeping with the sprit of Pigface being anything they want it to be and smashing peoples preconceptions of what Pigface is, they had a Mariachi band perform while the members of Pigface sat behind them. Present were Martin Atkins, En Esch, William Tucker, Hope Nichols, Ogre, Tim Gore, and more that I can't remember. I filmed this but missed a portion of the beginning as I either arrived late, had technical issues with the camera, or both. I can't remember as that was over 30 years ago now. I'll update this with proper date when Martin can find it for me in his archives. I know it was winter of 1992 and the tour was in December so I think this was the very end of November 1992.
This tape sat on a shelf in my closet for decades as I didn't own the camera I shot it on and had no way to transfer it. Thankfully my good friend Dave Bychowski (aka: Dark Dave), had the ability to do it as he had one of those cameras still! Big thanks to Dave for digitizing this for me!

For those who are coming across this documentary, this was in a 2nd/top floor event space that was above a now-shuttered restaurant at the corner of Irving Park Rd and Broadway in Chicago. It was a truly DIY, alcohol-free happening (the cops were VERY suspicious of them punkers) and this was a fair representation of what the local punk scene was like at the time. A lot of the audience were also in bands. The scene didn't always have a legit club, like Cabaret Metro, to stage shows, and this place was a haven for independent bookings. Minor Threat, MDC, and many others played here over its short run. Seems like maybe 2-3 years? Die Kreuzen was the opening band of choice, and never failed to get the crowd amped up for the headlining act. This day was Articles of Faith, who were in a rivalry with The Effigies for Chicago punk's top spot. The Articles of Faith were a hard-left bunch, with the lead singer/songwriter going on to become a professor of political science at American University. The Effigies were soft-right boot boys whose lead singer/songwriter went on to work for the DuPage County (rich western suburbs) prosecutors office. The contrast between the two factions shows that we weren't always a united community, with some competition, and certainly not a monolith. We were a bunch of kids having a visceral, good fuckin' time with our friends and acquaintances, catching each other when we launched off the stage, picking each other up when we fell on the sweat-slicked tile floor. A moment in time, never to return...

Lucky you for being part of that scene in those furious time, fella. It's interesting how the Chicago scene was split in two factions: the earlier, older scene spearheaded by Effigies, Strike Under, Naked Raygun, DV8, Subverts, DA, Big Black and a later, younger scene led by A.O.F., Negative Element, Rights Of The Accused, Savage Beliefs, End Result, Out Of Order...

It was just today I found out that there are a whole bunch of early Ministry songs that were only played live and presumably have no official studio recordings and now I'm kind of bummed out as a fan of their early work. Honestly had no idea.

  • @jamesmcrae9360

Wow this is fantastic! Al really does have a great voice for this stuff, sounds just like the studio recording, which is a claim not many vocalists can make. Sucks he was never really into it, he could have been one of the biggest names in the scene. also too bad the audio and video quality is so poor, but it's a video cassette recorder from 1983 so I guess you really can't expect much. Wish I could see an alternate timeline where Ministry stayed with this style, as I am only a fan of their early work and don't really care much at all for anything after Twitch.

Never heard the song "So So Life" and never knew it existed until today. Sounds good and a real shame it never got released in any way. Should have made the album. Edit: Watched the whole thing and there is a whole bunch of unreleased songs in this show. That sucks. (The fact that all there great songs were never released, I mean. Not the show, it's fantastic, just wish the quality was better.)

I miss the 80’s. Maybe we didn’t know everything they were saying back then, but the music & raw intensity is the feeling you interpret in your own mind. Not by looking up things on the internet, but raw feelings & interacting with the scene back then. Goddammm I really miss those times & people!
