I wish Nesmith would have never been selected initially! Nesmith outcasted himself from interviews and concerts. Yet it was the Monkeys that brought that jackass fame! Or you can say his mom brought money to Nesmith!

Loved this and loved Al's insight about the current state of the two bands touring. My hat goes off to Al for always speaking of Brian with respect and compassion.

Mike love is a jerk they could of made it without him . He should of given more respect to Brian Wilson. He is kind of a big dick.

PW, classy as ever. I had no idea he held Prince in such awe. That is really meaningful coming from someone of Paul's caliber. Thanks for sharing this! The interviewer wasn't an idiot, either, and that is so rare. He did a great job.

I've been interested in this. I was fortunate enough to record with Mike Bosley which led to jamming with Bash and Pop. Tommy decided to use Max. This has been the soundtrack to my life and I got as close as I could. There was a rehearsal space in Los Feliz (east hollywood) and I was such a fan boy I think it showed. I felt like everyone enjoyed it but these are not easy people to get close to. I had not yet become jaded. I've heard lots of great stories but never all the 411 about Bob leaving. There was a piece I remember in rolling stone but the actual departure I think was omitted. Great stuff.

People seem to forget that the Wilsons were self medicating, staying in bed, and he didn't you have to give him that!

Great interview, glad you so articulately thanked him at the end. As someone who loves playing music, he has hugely enriched my understanding of one of my favorite hobbies. Can't wait to see him in Mpls in October.

I thought that was actually one of Mike's better interviews. I think the primary things that lead to him being viewed as the "villain" in the Beach Boys story was his infamous Rock N Roll Hall of Fame speech as well as suing Brian and Al. The people who were around at the time don't recall Mike ever saying to Brian "Don't F with the formula". I will give Mike the benefit of the doubt with the Reunion though. There have been conflicting stories on why it ended when it did. As for Mike being able to bill his own band as The Beach Boys you can actually thank Brian and the estate of Carl Wilson for that. They both voted in favor of Mike being able to tour under the Beach Boys name with only Al Jardine voting against it. But Mike does not own the Beach Boys name like some fans and members of the media tend to believe.
