Black walnut log that was a yard tree. Couldn't turn it down and knew there would be a nail or two. Didn't think there would be 11. Still turned out beautiful.

    Good job! You never know until you open it up. Wow, Jason can speak, usually he sounds like mumbling in the background 😁🤣 Chris Shea down in VA uses something to stabilize wood. I think its called preservation solutions and I think they sponsor his channel as well.

    Air dry your lumber until the moisture gets below 20% before putting in a kiln. Trying to kiln dry lumber that is too wet will case-harden it making it difficult to work.

      Thanks for the question, I wear one when milling black walnut and red cedar. Those irritate my sinuses bad. Sometimes I wear one when milling an old log with fungus growth to.

    That really stinks, you know you need a good blade to cut that stuff clean, but you also know you’ll probably hit metal in walnut, never fails. Double whammy

    this is high tier live edge slab wood in my area. I personally would pay about 150-200€ for each slab

      Lol, no I think it was a 7 degree Woodmizer. We had hit 2 already and this was our 3rd blade. Had a turbo 7 on earlier but didn’t want to waste another one since this was a yard tree. Experiencing a lot of blade chatter so got to figure it out. Even with a new blade. Having a drive issue with the head I think.

      We have Spalted but there is the ambrosia beetle that gets in and streaks the wood.

    Normally you get Spalted maple from hard maple. Soft maple tends to rot before it turns Spalted it just much to soft gotta catch it at the perfect time

      That's the best way to see if it has the beetle in it. Look for holes about 1/16th of an inch to 1/8 in size. I hope its full because they turn it into some great looking stuff.

      @ I actually didn’t notice the holes until I was taking it off the mill the other day to get some pine cut. I loaded it on the mill the night before but priority’s changed on me.

      @ that’s how we decide which maples to cut. Look for those holes, the more the better.

      The butt log was mostly solid the bottom 6 ft with spots here and there. Middle log was good and top log was pretty good. We needed to get it out of there a year ago but couldn't.

      @ I sawed a huge old white oak a few years ago that I thought was mostly rotted, surprisingly only about 2” from the bark in, you could peel off by hand, the rest of the tree was hard as a rock but had the prettiest black streaks running through the whole log. Looked like tiger stripes

    PTO shafts are the worst. We use a quick hitch on our John Deere, just back in lift and lock the levers down from the seat. But still fight with the Pto. Southern Adirondack Outdoors sent me.

      Yes it certainly does. Stays straight milling it but it checked up bad. Hoping to salvage some for projects.
