How to not dip, the dip pen? How to break the dip pen in? Is the Graphos ink bottle any useful?
Переглядів 2,3 тис.3 місяці тому
In this video, there will be a comprehensive overview of dip pens and how to start using them and break them in, different handles, and the best way to clean the nib. I will elaborate on how to ink it without dipping the pen and what ink is most suitable for it. I'm going to use a Pelikan Graphos ink bottle to ink it instead of dipping it into the ink. I will go throw different nibs like zebra ...

    I really enjoyed this video. I liked the production value and the way that you organized it and your narration. Oh, yes, the information was very good too. I always suspected that rubbing alcohol would clean the oil off of the nib. I used flame before and will used alcohol in the future. I clean my nibs like that. Sometimes I use Koh-i-noor rapido-eze solution which works fast and well.

    I'm very curious about the surface you are drawing on at 1:21 in the video. Is it related to the lettering set? I have one that came from a Polish architect who worked from the 60s-90s. I also have a small lettering set like that - and it looks like a good idea to use them together.

    Interesting and useful video! I have a small pocket size, 9 pieces A-nib set called Markant 100. Graphos copy from DDR. Its pen is shorter and thicker than Graphos one, nibs are basically the same but can't be used with Graphos, but Markant can use Graphos nibs.I noticed, when you presented those Leroy sets, that your wooden box set misses its lettering pen. Anyway, great videos!

      @viggenajs3408 Many thanks for your attention 😊 I believe you meant GDR by DDR. If I'm right and it's made in East Germany, it should be robust and long-lasting like many other of their products of that era. And as for the wooden bow, it originally doesn't have lettering pens like technical pens. Instead, it uses some tiny proprietary pens like I showed in the video. I mean, it doesn't have any extra compartment for extra items. Many thanks for your attention and good luck 👍

      Sorry for my late reply. That Leroy set, it has a wooden nib holder, similar used on dip pens. You can attach a nib to this holder and then use it as a lettering pen. It is stored in that long slot where you had an extra template. DDR = GDR in English.

    • @sinashishehgarha3023
      @sinashishehgarha3023 11 днів тому

      Ah yes, now I see. Yes, it has a proprietary handle that receives those tiny pens to be used as lettering pen with templates or... . And as for the DDR, thank you, I didn't know that😊 I wish you health and happiness 🥰@viggenajs3408

    I have a set from 1950's, in wooden box. What's the correct or best way to clean the nibs after using? The most difficult is size 000. Is the fountain pen ink good choice for nibs? At least should be easy to clean.

      @viggenajs3408 Those vintage ones are really amazing 👏 I usually use sanitation alcohol which after pandemy can be found virtually everywhere. Just drop alcohol inside and wipe it clean. Don't apply water because it can cause corrosion. Fountain pen ink and technical pen ink or any acrylic ink can be used, but don't forget to clean it instantly and never let ink dry on or inside any of your art supplies cause cleaning it will be real headache after drying out. Good luck and Godspeed 👍

    • @viggenajs3408
      @viggenajs3408 23 дні тому

      Thanks for your reply. I think the safest ink is one for fountaing pens. Personally I would avoid using acrylic based inks. When they dry, they're almost impossible to remove. By the way, do you have a video about using C-Thru ink pen? It was meant to be used with templates.

      @viggenajs3408 My pleasure, buddy As for the ink, most of the fountainpen inks are not waterproof, so if that is not important, yes, it's the cheapest and the easiest one to clean and so the best option, Otherwise, you need to consider the technical pen inks that have their own ups and downs. And as for the lettering pen you just mentioned, no, I don't have any video right now, but it's while that I've been working on a video about the evolution of technical pens, I'll include that one as well. Many thanks for your attention 😊 I wish you health and happiness 🥰

      @lonecalligraphy Hi buddy, well, these things have been discounted for more than 35 years, and nowadays, it's quite hard to find a new one. The only way is searching online to find something less used or maybe even brand new by chance. But remember to watch my video and check the box content because if it misses a part, then it'll be a real headache to find the part. Like someone recently commented that I bought a set recently, but it doesn't have that ink reservoir, I mean the Graphos ink bottle. And believe me, finding a missed part sometimes is even harder than finding the whole box. I'll be really glad to help. Any time, buddy.

    So, what is the class of numbers for which pairs of line segments with the number as the ratio of their lengths, be constructed with compass, straightedge, and this tool? For compass and straightedge, my understanding is that it is something like, the rational numbers adjoin the (2^n)-th roots of integers, if I remember correctly? I know the square root of any integer is in there, but I don’t remember how to take the square root of an arbitrary given ratio… Oh, I think I vaguely remember the process. Ok. It sounds like this method allows constructing the sine and cosine of any rational multiple of 2pi? Does this allow for constructing any (real) algebraic ratio? If so: I’m surprised that one tool like this is enough to get to the algebraic completion of the rational numbers?? But maybe getting cos((a/b) 2pi) isn’t enough for that? Ah, wait, Yeah, just having the operations of n-th roots for positive integers n, and arithmetic, doesn’t suffice to get all the algebraic numbers from the rationals, because of (e.g.) the “unsolvability of the quintic”. Still, maybe this at least gets you everything expressible using just arithmetic and n-th roots? Like, there’s a correspondence between trisecting an angle and taking cube roots, right? Does that correspondence extend? Seems like it should. Ah, taking the cube root of e^(i theta), is trisecting the angle theta, but I want to cube root a ratio of lengths… If I have a ratio of lengths, I can find an angle which has that as its tangent, Uhh, tan(3 atan(x)) is probably a cubic polynomial in x or something like one? (a+b ı)^3 = a^3 + 3 a^2 b ı - 3 a b^2 - b^3 ı = (a^3 - 3 a b^2) + (3 a^2 b - b^3) ı, uh… Letting a=1, (1 - 3 b^2) + b (3 - b^2) ı , Hm… Can probably do it, not clear to me how to do it.

    Thank you for this wonderful video. I recently purchased a Pelikan Graphos. The pen itself is in great condition, but it seems like the feed was left to dry with ink in the reservoir. What would be the best way to address this? I don't want to damage the feed by forcing it out. It is solidly fused with the pen body by the ink.

    • @sinashishehgarha3023
      @sinashishehgarha3023 Місяць тому

      @skiegazer1953 It's my honor that you found the video useful and really appreciate your compliment 😊. As for the issue you just mentioned, I had the same problem with one of my Pelikan Graphos sets and should say it needs patience to address it. First, submerge it into a mixture of warm water and dishwasher liquid and let it be maybe like one week, depending on how hard the ink has dried. If you have tools like ultrasonic cleaner, it can be helpful, then use a tool like a tiny screwdriver and insert it in the back hole on the metal part of the section and without applying too much pressure try to push the feed out. Remember, don't apply any pressure on the notch of the feed as you can easily damage it. As I said before, you need to be patient for this and don't try doing it once, do it step by step, not damaging any part as the newest one is at least 40 years old and finding spare parts is a real headache. Wish you luck and take care.

    For the Leroy pens one barrel was enough because we didn't use them at all. Fun times in architecture before computers showed up.

      @ChoralArchitect I actually used to use them as every day pens till I found Koh-i-noor Artist Pen. It's basically a pen with the mechanism of a technical pen but with fewer issues and a soft buttery nib. I really suggest them if you are into technical pens, although refilling them is a bit tricky as they are designed to be disposable but not something an expert like you can't handle. Many thanks for your attention and sharing of experiences 🙏 😊

    This is my first time seeing a Graphos... that big set of nibs is fantastic! Will the Rotring Graphos accept the older Pelikan nibs? I ask as I imagine people hunting on eBay et cetera might resort to mixing and matching for lack of being able to score a compete set.

      Hi buddy 👋 all the parts except for the caps are interchangeable, like the nibs and the feeds. Even recently, a company from Netherlands named Stilovite has started reproduction of them with the same standards. So don't worry 😌 Good luck, friend.

    I used one of these long ago when I was a graduate student. I made all my scientific drawings and graphs for papers, presentations, and my thesis and got a little income to supplement my stipend by also making them for other people. I still have it somewhere. My version has little open cups for the ink for each point, and I like throes much better than using a Rapidograph-type pen. Easier to clean and maintain position. Many years later I picked up a larger set (mine had only six letter sizes) at a yard sale for very little.

      @@sinashishehgarha3023 : Thank you. Those old sets like mine were beautiful, in polished wood boxes that have held up very well over the decades. I quickly turned from using paper for those technical drawings to using Mylar film with the correct frosted surface to accept India ink. More transparent, more uniform, much tougher than paper, and it could be cut to whatever shape and size were needed. A mistake could be carefully corrected by scraping with a blade. I bought big rolls of it, probably almost a meter wide. Not cheap, but those rolls went a long way. (Note for fellow fountain pen users: never put India ink into a fountain pen, it contains shellac that will destroy the pen. There are now great fountain pen-safe waterproof inks.)

      I have two sets of those vintage series, just as you beautifully described: shiny polished wooden boxes, well made, and if well preserved will last you a lifetime. And Mylar film, I can vividly remember my university days carrying big rolls of them in tublar containers😊 almost every student from "facolty of civil and architect engineering" were carrying one of them 😀 you could tell them amongst others easily 😁 big T rullers, Big bags to carry plenty of stuff around, inky hands and sometimes clothes, oh dude what dreams may come 😊 good old days buddy, good old days...

      @@sinashishehgarha3023 : I remember now that I started doing these technical drawings as an undergraduate. I was always looking for jobs during the school year as well as during the summers to supplement my scholarship, which paid for very little. One of those jobs during the school year was with a professor with a big intro class to one of the sciences - biology? - intended for non-science majors. He liked to use enormous posters that could be seen from the back of the lecture hall to supplement his lectures, and he would put up several of these at a time. He wanted these drawn and lettered beautifully. For this purpose, he had truly gigantic K&E lettering sets that could produce letters several inches tall or more. These rulers, guides and scribes were bigger than any I have ever seen anywhere else, and by a lot. I was paid by the hour to produce his giant posters.
