Day 5 at the National Tandem Rally in Alnwick, Northumberland was wet, so we took our day off the bike. The following day - Friday - was fine so we headed south, along the coast then turned back for Alnwick further inland. Stopped at Shilbottle, The Running Fox, for a tasty lunch.

Wednesday at the ~National Tandem Rally is usually a 'rest' day with no planned rides, but we elected to tick one off our bucket list and ride out to Lindisfarne. Drove the bike to Belford to make it a manageable ride.

Local ride

Rode out to Hartley Wintney and back. These are some of the incidents on the ride. Close passes or inconsiderate driving... Closed roads (experience tells us we can often avoid a lengthy and less stable detour and still get through. Rarely are we either told, or find the road is completely blocked. We've even been allowed to ride through a closure manned by police.

Difficult detour

On the National Tandem Rally, returning from Packwood House NT property to Stratford Upon Avon, we came across a 'road closed' sign. Usually you can get through, but a worker said we couldn't. The map showed a small lane would be the shortest detour rather than retracing a few miles, so we went for it. Started ok but then it got difficult.

    Hi Bob, This is a bit of a funny question but....i need some advice!!! I am considering buying one from 2010 from Germany. The bike is in good condition and the seller is asking for 2700 euros, which seems a bit expensive to me. What do you reckon would be a fair price? Thanks heaps in advance

    • @bobbending
      @bobbending Рік тому

      It depends on the condition really. I think it's a bit expensive for a 2010 model, but if it's in really good condition, then maybe 2500€. Also check that the reinforcing bracket is fitted over the join... it's not on my Pino in this video, but they issued a free maintenance upgrade to reinforce the join, as there's cases of the welds failing. If it doesn't have the bracket, check the welds around there.

    Hi Bob , many thanks for your reply. I can see I shall have to go over and explore the area with family photos from the 1950s in hand! Some years back I visited the old Northumberland barracks and our family quarters at Menden from 1958'ish following 58 Medium's move to there from Lippstadt. As with Lippstadt the barracks area has been transformed into civilian accommodation and the gun park garages turned into business workshops and storage. How the world moves on. Best wishes to you and your friends and colleagues from your service at Lippstadt.

    Hi Bob, I really enjoyed your video and you clearly enjoyed your return there and explaining to your companion the purpose of various buildings. I hadn't realised how massive this barracks was/is. I was living as a 5 year old with my parents in one of the officers' quarters circa 1956 when 58 Medium Regiment was based there but soon after moved to Menden. I thought I caught a glimpse of those quarters roughly at 4.02 on your film. Would that be correct? I remember the house very well but cannot put it in context of the barracks as a whole. Many thanks.

      Hi John, The quarters up by the old NAAFI building were newer - built long after I left in 78. All the old gun parks have now been built on or landscaped over. In the 70s the married quarters were not within the camp confines, but elsewhere in the town and surrounding villages.

    Hi Bob - how quick do you think you could actually break the Pino down into 2 sections? We have a Mini to fit it in... I have seen a video of one coming out of a 206 - but not going in!

    • @bobbending
      @bobbending 9 років тому

      Sorry for not coming back sooner... It still takes quite a bit of room, even split but I guess if you took the wheels and seat off it may fit - if the rear seat in the Mini folds flat. It only takes several minutes to split... release the chain tensioner and take the connecting chain off the rear crank then drop it into a placcy bag and tie (saves getting oil everywhere). Remove front brake lever and undo the steering connector. Then you can loosen the two allen keys that keep it together. It's easier if you have a Hase stand to hold the front up. Disconnect the wiring which runs inside the frame. Loose and fold the bars and fold the seat down or remove it. Getting it back together can be tricky without help but not impossible. I would allow 15-20 minutes to put it all together and ready for riding.
