NSK alumni here, and Grand Master Chambers is the greatest Sensei and person I've had the pleasure to meet in my 37 years of living. He stepped in as a father figure for me and helped me become the martial artist I am today. It's amazing to watch this video and be able to show others the environment that molded me.

Love this!!!! Probably my favorite Conversation from the Hearth so far. I have struggled with nutrition and fitness through the years. I am well versed in Keto, but also know that while it is great for losing weight, it is not great for maintaining a lifestyle. My weight has been up and down through the years. Hopefully this year will be the year when I figure out a lifestyle to maintain where I want to be.

At about 5:00 they mention multi-art schools and imho: From my limited understanding of unarmed combat it can be broken down into 3 basic higher level concepts/types and I define an "art" to be a system that usually focuses on one or two of these higher level types. I also have other types like "internal vs external" and "soft vs hard". The higher level types can be thought of as something like striking(kickboxing/muay thai, western boxing, etc), wrestling(folk style, free style, greco roman, sambo, and imo most traditional animal styles of kung fu are 80-90% wrestling and 10-20% striking), and grappling. Jiu jitsu is easily the most popular grappling system and I personally train it but many wrestling "arts" also bleed over into grappling and I'm not aware of many other systems so heavily focused on grappling as the various forms of jiu jitsu are(comments welcome!). A well rounded "unarmed combat artist" would be at least competent in all 3 basic higher level types and imho a good school should teach all 3 but also it isn't bad to specialize either. imho it is a smart business decision for a lover of a particular art to learn two others and to offer all 3. What isn't good is giving students a false sense of being a well rounded fighter if they aren't because overconfidence is dangerous. Also, they mention how many of these specialized arts were created by isolated masters who discovered some truth, or set of truths, and imho I completely agree and I think there is wisdom in most arts and even ones commonly made fun of online. There is a quote that I'm going to misquote because I forget who said it and what country was used but I currently live and train in Mexico so: 'There are only so many ways the human body can move that is relevant to unarmed combat. This is a lot like geometry and there isn't Mexican geometry because that would just be geometry plus some cultural specific stuff. The main difference between unarmed combat and geometry is that unarmed combat is very much still open for growth and development and geometry is basically perfected" I think it is both naive to think like some people do and assume people in the past were totally ignorant as it is to assume they knew everything and everything was somehow better in the past. They were basically the same as we are but the symbols we have to describe our world are different and people who would have been illiterate peasants, myself and probably everyone I know would have been, just a few hundreds of years ago now have access to the kinds of information the masters of the past couldn't have even dreamt of. Just as an example, people who speak a language that lacks a word for the color blue do not see blue as we do and instead it is some shade of green that they will have trouble telling the difference between other shades of green and what we clearly see as blue. For better and for worse we have different symbols and we see different "colors" if you will but our bodies are the same and our basic/primal mental functions are the same. Notice I said "better and worse", we've gained a lot with a modern worldview but lost touch with something important too. While we have gained a lot of colors, going back to that analogy, we have also lost some very useful ones too. *edit* So my breakdown of unarmed combat arts is actually the 3 higher level type above, soft/hard, internal/external and living/dead. I forgot to mention the living/dead part. A dead art would be one were the tech is set, no changes/growth is a allowed, etc and a living one is basically one were whatever tech that works within the rules of the system wins, which the rules themselves may or may not evolve over time(e.g. muay thai, jiu jitsu, etc). imho hyper traditionalism isn't a good thing for an art. Obviously we need to respect the culture but "A tree without roots can not stand and a tree without branches can not grow". Since the topic of unarmed combat is still very much unsettled, as compared to geometry for example, a system stuck in the past could potentially have a natural strategic disadvantage as compared to a system with a similar focus but the advantage of the passage of time and letting the best idea win. "Truth is truth and therefore is independent of the source". Or said another way: an "idea lab" is always going to beat an "echo chamber" in the long run.

@@RisingPhoenixMartialArts I try to be careful and give disclaimers that these are my opinions developed over years of experince but I also understand that even though I "know" them to be true, not just believe, I could easily be wrong. I've thought I knew plenty of things in the past to only found out later that even when I was right I was also kinda wrong at the same time, or sometimes right but for the wrong reasons and finallly sometimes just straight up wrong. For the most part what I gave here was how I basically divide up unarmed combat so I feel I have basic justified confidence in the 3 higher level types. I've mostly focused on external hard arts, except jiu jitsu(external soft art) but I somewhat recently added internal soft arts for balance. Once I experinced "short power", "shocking power", etc without using strength it had my attention for sure.

What a great video!! Our son Deven is Autistic, considered Non-Verbal , has kyphosis of the spine, and has found so much more in Tae Kwondo under Master Samuel, than I could ever express. Community, Friendship, Team work, Comfort in Discipline and it’s rewards. As the parent, I have found the same. The relationship grows exponentially for the special needs parent. Most parents don’t even realize the support system that is created by the Dojang❤️ we are grateful to Master Samuel for taking this leap and I am lifted to know that another village is opening up to the Special Needs Community 🙏🏼❤️

You would want to fake high to distract him while you dove deep for the legs, taking him down before he can established the required base to do much damage with an elbow strike.

Really interesting points from both Sensei Devante and Master Olds around the importance of putting one's self in many different situations and types of people, so that a flexibility and comfort with different 'vibes' is established. And a sort of inner strength that can handle (and even tap into) some aggression without freezing. Interesting points...
