Is there a way to get the sword and sorcery stuff that was mentioned?

You want to know what the most common mistake I have seen new DMs make but also rarely gets talked about? Thinking that when they make something it needs to be used for that exact reason at that exact time and with all those exact factors. The rumor that you hear from the blacksmith can be heard from a farmer if they go to them instead, the puzzle you made for the fallen castle that they never even got to can be used in a mosuleum or ancient temple some other time. Content is perfectly flexible up until the moment it is delivered to the party and even then it isn't cast in stone
With apologies to woodchucks everywhere... A DM should do as much Prep as a DM wants to do, if a DM wants to do Prep. Just saying - there is no right answer for every DM/GM. YMMV 😎
First Like and First Comment, also here before I start my First DnD DM attempt. It's a sign 😂 not sure of what precisely 😅
Make an npc know it's an npc
The woman at 6:30 has never shot an arrow before or was self-taught. The noch (the part of the arrow closest to her) should be between her index finger and middle finger, not 2 inches above that. It's so glaringly wrong! Aaahh. Quick, someone give me a chill pill!
I think the critique towards the Hollywood born-heroes is right, but doesn't take the way of the distinction between born-heroes and bootstrap-heros. Skipping over how "bootstrap" feels etimologically worse than "born", regarding a hero; I would steer the focus from the source of heroism to the founding of it. I think we all can agree that heroism is about doing what's right, and a good story is about overcoming obstacles. In this regards both born-heroes and bootstrap-heros can use their power to overcome those obstacles. An example of this is Frodo and Sam both being good heroes despise different type. What I think Hollywood's born hero are lacking is exactly this: the tale wich proves them heros, even before considering the source of their "heroness". Being born powerful and learn to control that power or being born powerless and learn to be powerful both share something: the tale of overcoming difficulties.
Very Useful video, as someone just getting stuff released, this is very helpful!
Glad it was helpful! I wish you the best with your endeavors.
I don't think Spiderman is a born hero.
He's an interesting case. Certainly he has humble beginnings and some markers of bootstrap heroes, but once he gets the super powers that throws a wrench into things. Now, his choices are limited and he is special no matter what. That puts him more inline with a born hero.
@@dicegeeks I'm not sure. I could very well be unaware of any recent rewrites of the lore - but just going off the classic canon - he got his powers accidentally, there was nothing destined about that. And he did go off the rails to begin with. It wasn't until the death of Uncle Ben that he had to face those consequences. So he was in control of who he chose to be going forwards. And then he made his own costume and web-shooters. Sounds pretty boot-strappy to me. 😀 Interesting video BTW.
The one time I had this, I gave the first player something to do (in this case it was letting the mage add a few new spells to their slots) while the other player catches up. I’ve done exclusively one shots so I don’t have much experience with longstanding campaigns.
Good comparisons here, very thought provoking (especially about modern Hollywood!) 👍
Great video. I'm just beginning to write and this is really informative
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching it.
And you apologize for putting peanuts in their food. You tell them you had no idea they had a nut allergy. And you hide the evidence. But in your heart, you know that the murderhobos would have wanted it this way.
Usually I'm the DM for all of our games. The person who was the DM before me moved to California from Pennsylvania and quite frankly I kind of missed playing. While visiting my alma mater I ran into a professor who plays Dungeons & Dragons and he ran a campaign for myself and a friend. We became pretty good friends. It might have been only 8 months when we found out he tragically suddenly passed away. We were actually getting ready to plan a really big campaign with 8 to 10 people we were still figuring out if we're going to run one or two groups I know his parents and sister appreciated the stories we passed on. All you can do is be there for people.
So, another fun side effect of not going for plots but rather for hooks and situations: You as the GM get to be (pleasantly) surprised too, and that makes it way easier for you to lean into whatever the players are trying to do, rather than what you want them to do.
I once heard someone say “in the flesh” and I almost jumped them
I was pleasantly surprised to see you jump to The Inner Light for a video! I'm among those who count it as their favorite episode - it even motivated me to learn to play the whistle. I've enjoyed perusing, and using, a few of your random table books. It's an extra bonus that I get these tie-ins of Star Trek and D&D. Keep these videos coming!
I'm glad you are getting use out of my books. That means a lot. I'm also glad you like these videos. More are coming, but it will be a bit until the next Star Trek video drops I'm afraid.
I guess they meant how to deal with it story and roleplay wise. I suggest having a scene around the death, if it was in combat, try giving them a last action to go out with a bang. But sometimes deaths are gonna be anti climatic and unexpected, in that situation I suggest leaving the hard work for the players. Let them give the character a proper burial or leave a memorial of some sort. Not everything has to be conducted by the GM, the players can show their grief for the deceased character by themselves.
I say womp womp and continue the campaign without them
Now I feel way better about throwing a grick at the party of 3 lv 3 adventurers as their very first fight in the game (I've never played dnd before and somehow ended up as the dm so I don't understand combat difficulty)
I never really liked this episode. It was too boring and depressing for me. But I'm glad people like it.
I never found it boring. It is incredibly sad though.
I think if you're going to do number 1, you better talk to your players first.
If it's a long-running campaign with friends, there's no need to talk to them first.
@@dicegeeks I don't think that's absolutely true. It really depends on the group.
Ok better answer: build a beginning the start where your players will meet or whatever the start of the adventure, make the BBEG (Big Bad Evil Guy or main antagonist) then build the rest based on your players actions
I made another video about creating the beginning and not the end: ua-cam.com/video/H_cfcoUDw5M/v-deo.html
Thanks for the content! Trying to get past my anti-social media nature is difficult.
So i dont think the whole body swap is good advice. In dnd people make charachters they want to play, not get the dm to make them for you
This is sad to hear. Sure, you wouldn't do it for the first session or at all in probably in a short campaign. However, in a long campaign role-players usually relish the opportunity to play different characters for a session or two. I loved it when our characters turned into bears while visiting the fey in D&D. Years ago I ran Star Trek game where a time distortion made the captain and crew Roman senators. It's the session that is remembered decades later.
If your thinking like first area of the game low lvl players take the whole DMG that the entire team can do double it and make that number the enemy's health now take the party's total health divide the number by 3, make that the enemy's dmg
That last bit makes no sense since the average party size is 4 ppl. If they have on average 50 health your enemies will be doing nearly 70 DMG per hit
I think Frakes saying he didn't get why this one was so popular was just a dig at Patrick Stewart, since the episode sidelines most of the cast. I took it as being tongue-in-cheek
Frakes has said the same thing about "Yesterday's Enterprise", although in that case I think he was being genuine! 😁
The clip I saw didn't seem too tongue-in-cheek. I think there has been some friction in the cast over Stewart wanting to be spotlighted more in the later season of TNG and the movies. Probably not wanting any of the others in Picard at the beginning probably didn't help either.
oh so you're the guy who made those random tables! nice excellent video, too
If you only have one "plot" for the characters to go after that is the problem. Creat several plothooks, with some minimal info for you to run any of them, then let the pc's pick what to go after.
Thanks
Monks with sticks. I giggle, does that take a Ki point?
D&D has become gayer than 2 dudes f*****n
A GM is basically like Egon in Ghostbusters 2: "Let's see what happens when we take away the puppy..."
This is the 14th worst video about Star Trek I've seen on UA-cam... First starting off with some VR scene intro that has nothing to do with Star Trek or D&D and then complaining about the fair not having enough crowds when it's a TV show, go to a real life fair if you need that!
Seems like they cobbled this one together for Majel's yearly visit. Glad you could extract some benefits! 👍
Thanks.
I'd forgotten how forgettable "Coat of Living" is. Even the 'parasite eats the ship' plot was done better in season 2's "A Matter of Honor".
You're right!
What's the manufacturer of that beautiful die in the thumbnail?
Sadly, I don't know
Using Worf to highlight the validity of an alternate perspective is a nice moment
More great advice, thanks
3:06 - Wil Wheaton has said that he still cringes at that line.
I don't doubt he does, especially since so many have heaped undeserved grief on him. Maybe it was delivered poorly or it comes across as goody two shoes. However, I love the sentiment behind it.
People nowadays play D&D as Lord of the rings and keep it high fantasy, while the origins of the game are set in weird tales, low fantasy like sword and sorcery stories and movies like this one. We need this stuff to play more fun games...
The Lord of Rings was certainly an inspiration to D&D, but I know what you are saying.
I'm not sure if this episode plants the seed for traitor admirals. I think the trope has its roots in Tos where every captain they meet ends up being a terrible person...
That's kind of fair. High Space Commissioners were the worst as well.
I made the mistake of acquiring too many random tables and then not knowing where to even start looking. I'd love a video with advice on how to use random tables quickly and seamlessly, so play doesn't stop for a minute or two while I roll 4d100 and look up 4 tables to generate a monster / NPC / location and so on. Thanks!
I'll certainly think about it. Thanks for the idea!
Couldn't you just take 4-5 of your favorite encounters from each published table and put them together into your own tailored table?
@@Simpson17866 Absolutely, and I've done it. But the random tables I'm talking about are much broader than just for encounters. Have a look at The Book Of Random Tables - i bought a few of those and now there's so much stuff! Especially adding tables from Knave 2e, Ironsworn, Starforged and so on.
This style is great because you can now prep based on what your players are interested. Build just enough to keep things going and go from there.
Excellent!
I love the whole concept for this series. How far are you going to take it? Are we going to see "D&D tips from TNG's 168th worst episode?
Haha. I'm glad you like the series. I'm not sure where I'm going with. Views have dropped off so I may stop or I may do the best episodes and see how those do.
Ahem... Arrowhead.
an example: doctor who
I've always had a soft spot for this episode, despite its flaws. Maybe it's the themes that you mention in your tips?
Perhaps. There are some interesting bits here.
