🎉 Thank you for informative video. I have a question about: Is it compatible with Raspberry Pi 4B 8 GB?
with running the image classifier i get this error meesage Jennypi@Jenny:~/Python-3.9.19/pycoral $ python3 examples/classify_image.py \ --model test_data/mobilenet_v2_1.0_224_inat_bird_quant_edgetpu.tflite \ --labels test_data/inat_bird_labels.txt \ --input test_data/parrot.jpg Traceback (most recent call last): File "/home/Jennypi/Python-3.9.19/pycoral/examples/classify_image.py", line 36, in <module> from PIL import Image ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'PIL'
Nice writeup!
thanks for sharing! but how does it get integrated into a backend python program for example?
The inference functionality? What time in the video specifically? Each python script can be modified and inference could be just an integral part of a large project, in the backend.
@@ExpatProfessor thanks for the response - I am relatively new in the embedded system world. My question was more general and not pointing to a specific time in video. I am exactly thinking about how to implement the inference function in Python and build that into a more comrehensive project . The video seems to perform all the interaction in shell. It will be very interesting to see it in action through python. thanks again for the great explanation in this video!
is it not using the gpio pin in its connection?

Coral Edge TPU is dead. Google does not support the hardware any more. It became obsolete.
@@ExpatProfessor : ( What did you use yours for now though? Is it a paperweight?
@@ExpatProfessor ua-cam.com/video/D9IExho8pwo/v-deo.html Someone got it to work before on v5s.. how can we still do this? We can use Ultralytics HUB to train and then label with it, hopefully it can do API requests when certain things are detected? I did get it to work temporarily but no idea what I did. I cannot figure it out anymore but it was showing bounding boxes.
What a depressing afternoon. I thought I'd try a coral TPU out. I ran into the python issues and ended up setting up a python 3.9 docker container for the job. Despite trying everything under the sun every attempt leads to a seg fault as it tries to initialise the interpreter.
Coral Edge TPU is dead. Google does not support the hardware any more. It became obsolete.
@ExpatProfessor I did actually get it to run, with a ludicrous amount of effort - a custom docker container with exactly the right versions of tf, pytorch, python etc.... but I still don't really understand what happened here?!? These edge devices are phenomenal, but they're all on "pause" (I'm not convinced it's dead yet). I can't even find anything similar that's really alive and kicking. Any suggestions?
is it possible to write a script that keeps different screws or small objects apart?
How do you mean “to keep them apart”? Do you mean recognize and distinguish each individual one from a bunch?
@@ExpatProfessor Yes, your description is way better :D
Guys donot run this 2. Update the python3 symlink: If you want the system to use Python 3.9 by default when you type `python3`, update the symlink: sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/python3 python3 /usr/local/bin/python3.9 1 It might break your system package.
When I run sudo apt-get install libedgetpu1-std I get this error:ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'apt_pkg' Edit: Turns out that this isn't a problem. I did get an error about the numpy version when trying to run inference but 'pip3 install --upgrade numpy==1.19.3' fixed that. Now it's working great! Thank you for this video I'd been struggling for days.
Nice content, wondering are you interested in a potential video collaboration? (PCBWay zoey)
Can we detect different people faces? Can we open doors based on faces? Can we write a script to make decisions?
Yes, yes, yes! I'd love to show you all of that in my channel, but indeed: yes
Fantastic video! thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful!

I'm not sure how common axial lead capacitors are these days. I guess you could use modern through-hole electrolytic capacitors to replace the bad ones, but you might end up needing extension wires, and even if you do not, it might ruin the look. I suggest you replace the bad components with new ones, put the new ones on the underside of the board, and hot-glue the dead old ones on top of the board.
Perfect, that is exactly what I will do. May I mention your nick name in my next episode?
@@ExpatProfessor Absolutely.
Why its not working anymore
Do you have any details?
The OrangePi boards come with an NPU on board. RPI is really lacking in hardware
I bet, one day, it will get integrated in RPI as well...
OrangePi's rockchip only offers a handful of TOPS, and the software support for rockchip hardware is terrible across Linux bc the company doesn't do the due diligence that RPI does to ensure support.
Even now i would love to get my hands on a electronics laboratory like that. Its actually a lot better than the unit i have! Top video 😊
My brother had an almost identical one - I played with it a lot as a 10 year old kid. That's how my career in electronics started. I didn't grasp algebra or Ohm's law yet, but still, I learned schematics and built circuits. We didn't have Commodores and all the fun '80s Western stuff until the '90s, after People's Republic of Poland fell, and our country started opening up to foreign tech, clothes, food and other consumer goods - those were wild times. Our industry didn't survive the disruption in economy, factories were going bankrupt or were bought out by international corporations, usually as a hostile takeover. Unemployment and inflation soared. Lots of people came out destroyed from this era, but some entrepreneurial types made fortunes.
I know because I went through that. That is when I left for USA. 🇺🇸 też jestem Polakie
@@ExpatProfessor ah, I thought you were born American and moved to Poland :)
@KeritechElectronics moving back and forth… cannot make up my mind
Nice. I've had similar kits.

I still have one in the attic.
Hold on to it! 👍
Ex pat? You mean inmigrant don't You?

Thanks for the feedback
I was never a fan of such electronics kits. I had a similar RadioShack kit from the very early 2000s. I much prefer building on breadboards and perfboards, since they're more permanent.
There is some magic 🪄 in seeing them all next to each other and waiting to be connected. Thanks!
Board placing is well done (like caps and antenna rod near each other), but the speaker terminals are STUPID (on the right instead of the left?).
Yeah 👍 they got tired designing the layout just before they reached the speaker 😂
You must be Russian, you said "the relay" instead of the correct "a relay" :)
Polish-American. I am suspended in between… ☺️
All the transistors are germanium low-frequency with 1MHz transition frequency. The IC has inside analogs of BC546 (soviet KT315) or MMBTH10. I had some details from these in 1990x when I was a scoolboy
Wow, thanks for the detailed research.
That is pretty cool. Radio Shack in Canada sold a similar kit in the late 70s. This is pretty cool that they create simple amplifiers to illustrate how the transistor is used. A little non-intuitive that in the PNP circuits that have the + side of the battery at the bottom of the diagram, not the top. I believe in Western electronics, the negative voltage is always at the bottom of the schematic.
Good eye! I also have a Czechoslovak kit to film as well, let us compare in due time.
Much better than the kit I had . A dc motor in a little race car, and a light bulb.
Every little thing helps. What country was that modest „kit” available at?
Hello. My family came from Breslau. Trying to learn family info is impossible.
Hello, I live 1 hour away from Breslau and I am there a couple of times a month. Why learning about your family is impossible?
@@ExpatProfessor no records for family. People said destroyed in WW2
@@Tinkergrumpybuns Sorry to hear that...
Excellent ! can it detect patterns like aruco markers or qr code pattern ?
You do not need any Coral Edge TPU to detect these things you've mentioned. An USB camera and any machine, even Raspberry Pi is capable of doing it with the right Python script and libraries.
@@ExpatProfessor Hi, I have done that alreday; ua-cam.com/video/NbAy1U694nc/v-deo.html I was thinking if google coral usb accelerator could enhance the performance of my system in terms of video resolution which is currently 640x480 to may be 1080p or atleast 720p and fps which is currently 15-20fps to minimum 30 fps.
This ONLY works for python version 3.6 - 3.9. NO the "pyenv" doesn't solve the problem. If your OS natively runs with python 3.6 to 3.9 then opt USB Coral, otherwise for newer OS better look for something else. Coral dev team already made enough money out of this product, and are NOT willing to provide support to fix any issues.
Big thanks for taking the time to create this video , easy to follow process and sharing the info. My USB Coral is now working with the Pi5 🙂 😁👍
Lol, can you take control of my pc and install it for me? i desperately need it
This is Raspberry Pi tutorial 😀
@MachineLearningSebastian lol ik I'm just desperate lol I put raspberry pi os Debian 10 on my steam deck nothing ubuntu container was the closest I got but failed doing the test libedgetpu issue
Cool demo! Does this mean that you can use two different versions of python in your Project1 as well? Say you have another Python script that relies on Python2.7 and that script is also a part of this "Project1" such that it's executed first, say, to recognize something, then, once it's finished, the next script is executed, which uses python3 to perform a different type of computer vision task. Have you done such a task before?
I think that might work. I recommend not using Python 2 any more however... but yeah, that worked, didn't it?
@@ExpatProfessor yes, it worked here. I asked because I will try as well. I have been working on a drone project and would like to integrate the google coral, however, I am also using the dronekit API, which depends on python2.7. I guess its an old API and not being maintained anymore, but it is still useful. So I am going to try to have two virtual environments on the latest bookworm image, the first with python3.9 for coral, and the second with python 2.7 for dronekit. Wish me luck! lol
Great video my friend! I am enjoying your channel and learning tons... thank you! Question, why didn't you simply take the same approach as you did with the other video (from two months ago) where you used pyenv in your Ubuntu to manage the python versions? Is it not possible here, or maybe you just want to show multiple solutions? I am trying to follow along and I have a CM4 module so hopefully I have as much fun as you!
Well, that did not work. Still issues while using pyenv....
@@ExpatProfessor interesting... do you have any clues as to why pyenv isnt working in this case? I just flashed my CM4 module and installed the latest bookworm image, so I checked the python version and its the same as yours, i.e., 3.11.02, but I did not get a chance to try pyenv. I will try in the coming days and hopefully have something to report.
Thank you for putting this together! I had spent more than 2 days struggling to get my setup up and running and was starting to look for alternatives to Coral. I'm excited to finally have this up and running!
Well, I am glad it helped and now it runs!
I'm still struggling with mine I have till the 1st to return but I like it for my project but still can't do it
I get this when I try to run an example: /Python-3.9.19/coral/pycoral $ python3 examples/classify_image.py \ --model test_data/mobilenet_v2_1.0_224_inat_bird_quant_edgetpu.tflite \ --labels test_data/inat_bird_labels.txt \ --input test_data/parrot.jpg A module that was compiled using NumPy 1.x cannot be run in NumPy 2.0.0 as it may crash. To support both 1.x and 2.x versions of NumPy, modules must be compiled with NumPy 2.0. Some module may need to rebuild instead e.g. with 'pybind11>=2.12'. If you are a user of the module, the easiest solution will be to downgrade to 'numpy<2' or try to upgrade the affected module. We expect that some modules will need time to support NumPy 2.
I tried the coral usb on windows and Ubuntu nothing 😢 I'm returning mine I've been trying for over a week now
What a pity, perhaps you could give the Coral Dev Board a try instead...
What about fedora 40@MachineLearningSebastian
The problem with all these TPUs is that you can only run the models from the examples. So far, I didn't manage to find a tutorial on how to design and train on an Nvidia card a CNN model that will run on Coral or any other Pi TPU
All NPUs will have their own formats. The approach is to convert existing models to the target NPUs format; number precision and matrix dimensions.
I badly need the coral dev board right now for my ADAS project but the 4GB version is out of stock
Are there none on eBay?
Does it matter what kernel version or is 6.1 good enough?
As of now, the current kernel version for RBPi is 6.1. I did not test it with any other. If you use the standard update and upgrade process, it will automatically update to this latest stable kernel version.
Very good content, I'm glad to know that there are people uploading useful content like this. I look forward to seeing you implementing a yolo model with tflite and GCoral!
Hello Chief im new to this i wanna buy one Can you try a pre-trained roboflow model id like to see you? performance my surfaces pro 9 only get 6fps at 640x640 at 18fps at 100x100
Yes, Coral Edge TPU will accelerate a roboflow model. This is on my list of things to do!
@MachineLearningSebastian thank you so much for replying. I'll be looking forward for it. Thank you again
can raspberry pi 5 and google coral usb run yolo models (like yolov8) well? I'm really looking forward to the next video if you are pleased.
Hi, YOLOv8 models are typically developed using frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow. To run these models on the Coral USB Accelerator, you would need to convert them to TensorFlow LITE format and then further compile them for the Edge TPU using the Edge TPU Compiler. So in other words, that is a lot of work.
