Nutmeg
Back in the 16th century Spices were more valuable than gold with European powers competing for routes to the Spice islands of South East Asia. The only way to reach these exotic islands was to round the southern tip of Africa before crossing the treacherous Indian Ocean. Nutmeg was one of many tropical spices along with cloves, cinnamon, star anise, ginger and pepper which were highly sought after at the time. The nutmeg tree is unique in that we derive two spices from its fruit, the brown seed is grated into a fragrant powder while the waxy aril surrounding the seed is called mace and is much more subtle. Despite the Portuguese being the first to circumnavigate the African continent it was the Dutch which set up a replenishment station in the Cape of Good Hope. The company gardens in Cape Town is a remnant of the rudimentary vegetable garden and fruit orchards which stocked up ships en route to the tropical regions in which these trees grow. Plants like nutmeg have in their own way deeply influenced the history of South Africa in more ways we might think. #plants #spices #spiceroute #myristicafragrans #nutmeg #singapore #southafrica #trees #mace #capetown #fruit #exoticfruit

Such interesting flowers and plants from Africa.
The editing of this video is absolutely outstanding, well done! It gave me goosebumps watching it and Leon I hope one of the wildlife TV channels realise your exceptional talent for fauna and flora. You would be so successful having your own documentary channel.
Thank you so much!, perhaps one day.
Love your channel I get so much inspiration from the the plants you film for botanical artwork!❤

So so so beautiful. How did it smell? Intensively? Or tender?)
Absolutely stunningly beautiful...well done...so proud of you guys & S.A.
Brilliant and reminds me of some Stapeliad families!
You have very interesting vegetation in Africa.
How interesting. What a pretty flower for the beach.
Someone needs to try and cultivate that little beauty.
Just wonderful the background and beauty. Living in the great Sonoran Desert here in Arizona, USA that streches into Mexico and to the ocean I think I appreciate this as much as anyone watching these awesome plants videos. When our Mooson rains come about now its amazing the tranformation that can happen to plants that appear as by magic. I so want to visit South Africa and see these plants in habitat. In the mean time I grow aloes and euphoribias in my yard and think what flowers and plants I might grow in my desert garden from the Cape and surrounding arid areas? Maybe some type of protea that can take our high heat? Right now its 46 degrees C. So hot! Keep making these videos. Thanks so much.
Fascinating plant long might they survive!
My favorite genus!
❤
That mountainside is truly God's garden.
