Adventures on a sailing boat
38) Left Gran Canaria but diverted to Tenerife with a leak!
Well, a disappointment!
The leak we noticed on our passage to the Canary Islands reappeared! We had spent time trying to track it down while in Gran Canaria but couldn’t find it. We dried out the bilges and no more water came in whilst in the marina.
When we set off we checked again and could see water coming in through the keel attachment. Worse on one tack but made us worry about weeks at sea bailing and extra stress. Is it the keel? Just the keel seal? Will it get worse?
Decided to divert to Tenerife to get it checked. Arrived on a bank holiday weekend and were unable to get lifted, so after a few days of waiting (and then being told it would be 3 weeks!) we made some calls and went to La Gomera.
Watched the Atlantic rowers leave. Very inspiring (if totally crazy!) but made us feel a bit wimpy and we must get on with it.
Rosie was lifted and luckily the keel is sound, just the seal is damaged and leaking. We dried out for a few days, resealed and explored the island. Beautiful forests in the centre and great entertainment in the town square for Christmas.
Now back in the water and itching to go!
Fingers crossed that we get a bit further, although the winds look rubbish. We might go to Cape Verde and wait better winds!

37) Mainsail back on and almost ready to cross the Atlantic
Переглядів 21228 днів тому
Last week in Gran Canaria. Fetched the sail with its new reef from Las Palmas. Tried and failed to check out of Schengen (they just laughed at us). Bought ourselves a gas BBQ (which has had a lot of use) and some other bits and bobs, and of course a large grocery haul. A lovely surprise of visitors from the UK who were holidaying nearby-great to see you! And we were ready to go. Departure was d...
36) Gran Canaria - exploring with Dad and boat jobs
Переглядів 138Місяць тому
Another few great days out with Dad before we had to say goodbye. Then on with preparation for the Atlantic crossing, after building ourselves a sunshade. The jobs list is decreasing and we are making sure we get to the beach for a swim and a cool off every day.
35) First week in Gran Canaria - guest starring Dad
Переглядів 229Місяць тому
Very pleased to reach Gran Canaria and anchor for the night in Sardina Bay. Marinas are crazy busy, so we had a couple of nights at anchor before we could touch dry land. Dad flew out to meet us for some time on board and it was great to see him. We hired a car, mainly to take our main sail to a sailmakers to get an extra reef fitted (so we can make it smaller- it is too powerful for us!). Used...
34) Portugal to the Canary Islands, 6 day passage
Переглядів 605Місяць тому
We left Cascais early morning having stocked up with food, fuel and water. Soon discovered that our fridge was not working. Day 1 was a nice relaxed sail, settling into being onboard for a few days. Day 2 we had more wind and confused seas. We took our mainsail down, it is just too powerful for us, we hope to get a new reef put in when we get to the Canary Islands so we can make it smaller. Day...
33) More of Portugal (Nazare to Cascais)
Переглядів 112Місяць тому
We were sorry to leave Nazare as we loved it there, but Cascais was also very pretty and fun. We were well and truly overtaken by a French boat on the way from Nazare, we are definitely “sailing Miss Daisy”. Anchored for a bumpy night at Peniche amongst lots of fishing pots and onwards to Cascais the following day. Anchored up amongst several boats and got Big Jimmy blown up for adventures asho...
32) Coast of Portugal (Povoa de Varzim to Nazaré)
Переглядів 992 місяці тому
A beautiful walk along the coast from Povoa de Varzim to Vila do Conde where we saw the maritime museum, a replica 16th century boat, had amazing Portuguese sandwiches. Walked along the river admiring the views and aqueduct. Then we are off again. Several days of great weather, although with some residual swell, meant we could day hop inshore avoiding orcas (although contending instead with fis...
31) Spain to Portugal
Переглядів 1612 місяці тому
We were glad to leave the noisy pontoons in Ribeira and headed to a lovely sheltered anchorage in Baiona. Anchored near Dylola, a boat we have seen on AIS in the Biscay and Viveiro and finally met the crew. Thanks to @Bethbrowne for the photo of Rosie at anchor. Left early with a fleet of small fishing vessels, many without lights and started heading south. Crazy katabatic winds came off the hi...
30) Viveiro to Riberia
Переглядів 1482 місяці тому
Around the northern corner of Spain. Nights at anchor outside Viveiro, A Coruña, Camariñas then into the marina at Riberia. Lots more lovely dolphins, orcas have also been seen nearby but not by us. Tried to video the dolphins with the go pro on our new extendible curtain pole, but footage is still better over the side. A bit of sailing, but more motoring as there was either no wind, or wind di...
29) A week in Viveiro
Переглядів 1312 місяці тому
After getting across the Biscay, we wait for weather once again. Viveiro is a lovely non-touristy town with nice hill and river walks (even if it was a bit rainy). We had a strange noise from under the boat when we turned the shaft, saw something with the go-pro, but when the diver turned up to check it out it had gone! Enjoyed some tapas and explored the surrounding area, including the petrol ...
28) Crossing the Bay of Biscay
Переглядів 3802 місяці тому
We said goodbye to the beautiful Ile D’Yeu and set off across the Biscay. Day one we had SO many dolphins - really hard editing as I took so much video of them, could have been an hour long! Winds light at first and increasing through the night to make for some nice sailing. Day 2 we were visited by birds, mid Biscay, several came on board for a little rest. Day 3, we reached Viveiro and were g...
27) A week on Ile d’Yeu
Переглядів 2033 місяці тому
A fabulous island. We knew we would be stuck for a while as the forecast for the bay of Biscay was pretty terrible, strong winds and big swell, so we chose this island hoping it would be beautiful and it didn’t disappoint. A varied coastline with sandy beaches and rocky cliffs, lovely restaurants and more bikes than cars. Perfect! We explored on our bikes as well as working on our orca defences...
26) First week in France
Переглядів 2793 місяці тому
We arrived in Camaret Sur Mer wondering how to clear customs and what we needed to do, it was all very straightforward with just one form. Admin complete we went to explore. A beautiful seaside town with lots of restaurants and a Sunday craft market. Then onwards to a series of anchorages which all had their own charm. Belle Ile was particularly beautiful and we had a great day ashore. Spring t...
25) Mylor and leaving the UK
Переглядів 2733 місяці тому
A few lovely days exploring Falmouth, ghost tour and great to catch up with Jez. Then onto Mylor for a new aerial for the VHF and AIS, it has made a massive difference. We can see other boats about 25 miles away now. Will take a bit of getting used to as the English Channel looked really busy! Our old aerial only showed about 4 miles. Could also still hear Falmouth coastguard just off Brittany....
24) Milford Haven to Falmouth
Переглядів 1423 місяці тому
Great to see Anna and Steve in Milford Haven and have a few days rest before renting a car and going to watch Scott pass out from police training (well done, we are so proud of you!) Kidnapped Scott and Lee for the 26 hour trip to Falmouth. The wind instruments stopped working but we managed a lovely sail for much of the journey. Arriving Sunday lunchtime Falmouth was very busy, but got a berth...
