Alkali metals in water, accurate!
Переглядів 3,1 млн15 років тому
For anyone who insists it is fake, ua-cam.com/video/5aD6HwUE2c0/v-deo.html and stop giving me a headache. Watch to the end for the best (Cesium!)! A wonderful representation of the alkali metals and their accurate reactivity with water. unlike brainiac, who did infact use explosives in their episode for rubidium and cesium. Very worth a watch. All credit for this video goes to the makers of phy...

    How about reactions of halogens and water? How vigorously do flourine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine react with water?

    • @tylermaritz1701
      @tylermaritz1701 8 місяців тому

      They don't tend to react very vigorously at all except for fluorine because fluorine gives no shits at all. They mostly just dissolve and create a solution of halogen acids or oxyacids . Chlorine for example reacts to produce hydrochloric acid HCL(aq) and hypochlorous acid HClO

    • @tylermaritz1701
      @tylermaritz1701 8 місяців тому

      The reason is mostly that ionic compounds have a property called lattice energy which makes them highly thermodynamically favorable (they lose a lot of energy) while molecular compounds don't. Its why metal oxide and halide salts are pretty much invariably solid at room temperature and are hard and brittle while molecular compounds like methane and water tend to be liquids or gas.

      @joepeters4032 8 місяців тому

      @@tylermaritz1701 How does fluorine react with water? Or the other mentioned halogens?

    • @tylermaritz1701
      @tylermaritz1701 8 місяців тому

      @@joepeters4032Fluorine seems to be the only one that's highly exothermic. It's also different in that while it does form an oxyacid (hypofluorous acid) It is incredibly unstable. Thus due to its electronegativity it instead prefers to rip all the hydrogens off of the oxygen atoms and forms oxygen gas and ozone as well as hydrofluoric acid. The rest pretty much all react weakly with iodine like chlorine forming a haloacid (hydroiodic acid) and an oxyacid (hypoiodous acid) . Bromine acts the same forming hydrobromic acid and hypobromous acid. With chlorine and bromines reactions being spontaneous and Iodines being fairly endothermic so it needs to absorb a bit of heat. I can try to pull exact values for you but it could take a day or 2
