Приєднався 7 лип 2020
Stephen Bruce Medd is a performing storyteller and songwriter of historical Folk ballads and spiritual songs. Stephen assisted Avril Lavigne in her early development by writing 3 songs for her that were Avril's first-ever studio recordings. His songs are inspired by the remote and beautiful Canadian landscapes that he traveled as an exploration geologist; historical events and civil rights issues. Recently, he has published a book, entitled: If Lilacs Could Sing, a compilation of original and adapted ballads and rare archival pictures of historical events that occurred in Greater Napanee, Kingston and the Bay of Quinte area.
Stephen's musical influences include: The Chad Mitchell Trio; The Kingston Trio; Peter Paul and Mary; Pete Seeger; Gordon Lightfoot; Leonard Cohen; Stan Rogers; Archie Fisher; Kate Rusby; Karine Polwart; Julie Fowlis; British Folk-Rock; The Beatles

Roaming the barren lands of the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Northern Quebec was life-changing for me when I worked there as a geologist. The inextricable cultural connection between the Inuit people to the land and the caribou gave me a better understanding of my own place in the cosmos. Born Beneath the Midnight Sun is a music video tribute to the wonderful Inuit people known as the Inuinnait (Copper Clan) and the Bluenose Caribou (Tuktu) Herd of the Northwest Territories. After 20 years this newly recorded song is long overdue.

Twenty-five years ago The Quinte Spirit CD cover (1999) was made one cold day in March 1999 with snow on the ground when 3 families (mine, the Trotts and the Lavignes) walked from my house to the Napanee train station two blocks away for the photoshoot. Kathy Medd and Adrienne Trott took the photos. I like the way the cover turned out because we were too cold to stand around for smiley family p...

Looking back to 1998 with happy memories. We were all amateurs then with a joy for music. Some of the people on stage with me are Avril, Adrienne and Stephanie Trott. Cliff Trott is on the far left playing tambourine. John Lavigne is on the far right playing bass.
Looking back on Avril Lavigne’s first studio experience.

Thanks for this. I remember back in 2006 I downloaded an mp3 album which was basically a compilation of Let Go demos and of all these country songs. I must say I really really liked Touch the sky. Her voice is much more superb and clear singing these songs you wrote Stephen. Thanks for having all these recordings/videos! I hope in the future she'd record a country album with you as the main guest. Greetings from Argentina (Sourh America)
Hey, he was my great great great grandfather! how awesome :)
@@audiodavematthew thanks for checking out this song. Peter Matthews was the first grandson of my 5th great grandfather Capt Peter Ruttan who was a Loyalist soldier and refugee of the American Revolution. He settled my home area in 1784.
@@stephenbrucemeddmusic9399 that's awesome! So we are distantly related. Thomas Matthews (Peter's son) left Pickering for Michigan and settled in the thumb area. My Grand Father Alvin Matthews, was the oldest of George Matthews, who I think there was one more Matthews between him and Thomas. There's a sizeable clan of Matthews in Northern Michigan where I live. Some went west to Wisconsin and Minnesota. Mostly daughters who have different last names. But at least my one cousin and my brother and I have the Matthews name. I'd love to bring my family one day back to Pickering to see the monuments and memorials for our famous ancestor Peter. God bless!
@@audiodavematthew Dave, thanks for filling in some of the history. The Matthews and Ruttans are fascinating stories. I wrote a song about Peter’s Grandfather, Capt Peter Ruttan that I will be putting up soon on UA-cam. And I wrote music to a poem by Peter’s mother, Mary Ruttan Matthews. Here it is. ua-cam.com/video/-wNH6-BNWT0/v-deo.htmlsi=vRZ_9L2HObYl55MM

I have had these early Avril song on an MP3 player since the early 2000s no idea how I got them, possibly napster. I always assumed this and two rivers were covers of classic country songs and not originals. Bravo

I've loved Avril for a long time - I mean I used her as the main character in my novel Avril's Knight - but her main style of music isn't really mine, but I'd still listen to her when It came up - then here on youtube I ran across her early early stuff doing gospel and country and oh my God my admiration for her went even higher. God bless her.

It's been very interesting seeing all these videos chronicling Avril's first steps in music before commercial success. If you don't mind answering, as someone who knew her then, were you surprised by the "skater girl/pop punk" direction she took with her music and her image or did it seem natural and fitting for the girl you knew? Thanks.
Hi there. Thanks for checking out my channel. When I think about my younger self, I’m not surprised with the musical direction Avril took. It’s a time in one’s life when many things are changing fast. A time when you are searching for your identity outside of the walls of your parents’ house, including your own musical identity. When I left home I remember discovering and loving the Punk/New-Wave Music scene. Decades later I’m writing and loving Folk Music. Evolution.
@@stephenbrucemeddmusic9399 Thank you for answering, that makes total sense!
Hey Steve, was this the first Quinte Spirit (called Harvest Fest)? Or another Napanee event I wasn't part of.
Hi Sean, this was in the summer of 1998 before the Oct 3rd Harvest Fest (aka 1st Quinte Spirit Fest). We called this festival the Nessie Days which was a variety show on the banks of the Napanee River at the historic Macpherson House. I wrote the Nessie song as a feature of that festival
@@stephenbrucemeddmusic9399 Thanks, Steve. I should've known, as I remember playing Harvestfest at night and having to finger pick with stiffening fingers against the cold October night.

In 2022, I served as a humanitarian aid medic in Ukraine. It was both hell on Earth and the greatest possible example of beautiful human dignity. It felt as if we were enveloped in a fog of evil that rolled in with the invaders. With every horrific casualty, war crime, every innocent little girl, little boy, mom, grandma violated, maimed, killed, all I felt was deeper hatred - I was becomming evil. Periodically, the shelling and casualties would abate. For a little while, I could pop in my headphones. I stumbled onto some of Avril Lavigne's B-sides and lesser known music. I found 3 pretty songs by Stephen Medd sung by a big-voiced little girl. If only for a moment, a handful of songs transported me to a place of peace and innocence. For a moment, I felt human again. Those songs kept me alive so that we might help others. Mr. Medd, the two of you saved lives well beyond mine. That's the power of music. Feel good. You earned it. Thank you and thank her!
Hi Gregory, your words are powerful and they mean a lot to me. Thank YOU for putting your life at risk to help people in need. I wrote a song of remembrance, love and peace for refugees and victims of war. It’s called the Sunflower Prayer. I thought you might like to listen. Peace. ua-cam.com/video/mLUUGpQIxsI/v-deo.htmlsi=Sj7n-zN47UEwgY47
@stephenbrucemeddmusic9399 Thank you. That's a truly beautiful song. You have a new fan in Southern Canada aka Minnesota. We do a far bit of humanitarian aid stuff and it came to me one day, The greatest gift I ever received was the opportunity to walk beside someone through their darkest day. Can you imagine somebody allowing you into their world when they are most damaged and vulnerable, and giving you the opportunity to maybe help make it a little better? That's what you do for someone every day.
I've loved this song since I was little. First came across it around 2004. It's always made me feel calm and at peace. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for listening. I really enjoyed writing this one for Avril
