Some disclaimers: It is by no means accurate! 8th AF are the planned routes and timings, not the actual routes and timings flown. All other flightpaths are just straight lines from and to their respective bases and target areas. Take-off and land times though, are those mentioned in reports. Most of bomber command flight paths are assumed, based on a single Squadron report of that Group. Having...

Today marks the 78th aniversary of the mission flown by the 8th AF on 24 December 1944. It was the largest mission flown ever. While listening back the clips, I realized I seem to have some trouble in pronouncing 487th BG. Most of the time I said 437th instead. Link to my webcast series on this mission: ua-cam.com/play/PLLnicIpUtw_caT3V8hnAPPb6F4hW8asqI.html Also: in second half of 2023 my book...

Crossing the North Sea on the way in.
Enroute
Переглядів 203 роки тому
The flight overhead Belgium. The entire Attacking Force was larger than Belgium is in width. Some Groups are overtaking others. This can be explained due to the fact they were flying at a greater altitude and subsequently speed differences.
Re crossing the North Sea
Переглядів 243 роки тому
Re-crossing the North Sea. The gap in between the Third and First Force must have been the Second Force. However, as they were already flying on their Standing Operating Procedures, they are not vissible as no data was available as timings was concerned.
The Attack

The attack. Although last in, the Third Force was the first to attack. The First Force was second and finally the Second Force as last.

I'd like to animate a group assembly. I don't think it's been done before from individual aircraft to fully formed group. I've got it plotted from 390th data from a June 44 mission.

Wow! That would be something indeed. I do agree with you. Don't think it has done before, but you've done it? Congrats, is there a possibility to watch it?

@@joostderaaf I have plots only for every 30 seconds for a 21 ship form-up around RAF Framlingham. Got a position for every 5 minutes off a navigation log, plotted 1/2 needle turns, and used a template showing 30 second run at 150 mph. It matched the positions in a most satisfying way.

@@nelsonde It is a *.KMZ file on Google Earth which allows me to play it. I used "manycam" to capture the video screen.

Great job on this total project! I am very impressed with the detail that you provided. You should be very proud of your accomplishment. I hope many people will get to see this series and learn about the bravery and all out effort that went into the mission.

Thanks for all of your efforts on this series. It is wonderful to have so much detail. My father was a pilot in the 357th Fighter Group. He was on active duty at this time and may well have been on the mission.

This series is terrific, thank you. It's really a model for a complete analysis of a mission. A feature I especially like with these latest entries is the photo series of the bomb drops.

When we were flying maybe we were told in the briefing of the magnitude of these missions. I have no memory of those details. We took off. got in line for the formation, and hoped to return to base.
