As of March 2024 this train was not running. We had planned to take the service on the 11th March to Arusha from Dar Es Salaam, and headed to Kariakoo Gerianze to buy tickets 6 hours before departure. Upon arrival we were told this train had stopped running about 2 months ago due to the condition of the line. They were not able to tell me when the service would restart. I instead caught a 10pm KediaOne bus located a short taxi ride outside of town which I recommend. However, booking this is impossible without a Tanzanian or Kenyan phone number, so we travelled in person out to Urafiki to get these the morning before departing.

I was surprised at how good the bus was! It cost 50000tzs so about 20USD and ran exactly to the timetable. It seems as though this is the preferred travel method over the train as it is quicker. When you book you reserve your seats for the journey, and you just need to ensure you arrive about an hour before it is due to leave

I hope this roof covering is not asbestos, otherwise in a decade the people who live in these houses may get lung cancer. In that case the only to say is: What a pity, the mud house is so healthy and the roof is poisonous!

Vredenheim pronunciation: The "v" is pronounced like an "f". The 1st "e" rhymes with the word "ear". The rest you got right. So it's something like "freardenheim".

Great video I was a student in Moshi early 1980s. Commuted weekly from Arusha and trains were not there. Only buses. So this is development in progress I plan to visit old school ISM and will be trying those trains based on this video. Meat on stick in train ( aka mchomo) is a real motivator !!

Thanks a lot for sharing. We wachted your video and decided to try this night train with our children! What an experience!! 😊😊😊 See here a little feedback from our own experience. We took this train on the 5th of august 2022. On that day, we must have been practically the only tourists on the train! The staff on board and at the station were extremely kind to us. During our trip, there were several police officers on board, which we found reassuring. The train left on time, 2:30 p.m. from Dar Es Salaam and arrived at 6:00 a.m. in Moshi, our destination. That's a little over 15 hours of travel. We booked a full sleeper train cabin for our family 👩‍👩‍👧‍👦and paid 39.000 TSH per bed. We traveled for a good part of the time with the door open and were able to chat with several nice passengers. We also chatted with the on board controllers of train company that were very happy to have tourists on board. The train passes through the Tanzanian countryside and through different small villages, and it is quite pleasant as landscapes. But as it gets dark early (like 7 pm), we only enjoy the landscape for a small part of the trip,. There is a restaurant car, we ate on board. It's not haute cuisine, but it was quite okay. And again the service was really nice. They kindly brought the food to our cabin. 🍛 Regarding sleeping, we can not say that we sleep well. We are very shaken during the journey, sometimes even very strongly. And the train makes lots of stops. At each stop, he honks his horn loudly, which woke us up every time. Did we sleep well? Not at all 😵‍💫. And also we slept with the window open, and had the surprise in the morning to have a lot of dust in the cabin. So if you are looking for confort, I would not recommend it. But for us, it will remain an unforgettable memory of our trip! Filled with wonderful encounters, with very nice people, and with beautiful landscapes. So we don't regret it at all!! Conclusion, so if you can override the lack of comfort and you have the time for it, this is certainly a very nice way to get to Moshi/Arusha from Dar Es Salaam (or the other way around) See some pictures here: photos.app.goo.gl/ErReD4vqPUQmiPb87 Julien

What a surprising and delightful video! A few years ago when Selma Hayek made a film about Frida Kahlo, they used Capuchin monkeys as her pets, but it felt wrong. So satisfying seeing the recreation here with a spider monkey, so much more authentic. What a perfect photo recreation you created based on Frieda Kahlo's self-portrait!

I am imagining this or are you deliberately avoiding taking pictures of people? You video your family and 'co-incidentally' locals in the periphery. But I get the impression that you want the viewer to see what the locals look and act like. Yet you are cautious. Is this some new UA-cam policy of the past several years, your personal preference or are Zanzibaris camera-shy?
