For me I would pic your best two cocks out of the air and then pick out your best three hens out of the air mate both cocks to all three hens and get at least two rounds out of each pairing (use pumpers if you have them it will help speed up your project ) Then fly all the youngsters this way you will know what is producing the best for you after that you can take the best youngsters back to there half siblings . If those produce well then take the best youngsters back to there Grandparents ( AKA the best producers out of the 5 birds you started with ) there is one more thing dont forget about the brothers or sisters to the best producers you started with you may find out the brother or sister mated back on to his or her nephew or niece may out produce your first pairings Just food for thought this is how I would start out

Best hen to best cock never produce the best birds. You have to look for certain traits in each bird and know exactly what it is you're looking for

I don't think best to best is accurate statement... similar to what you said. We should be selecting pigeons that are all very similar in performance and quality and we are looking for the producers, producers are the best... Need to learn how to breed our pigeons and then learn how to mix the genetics we have to maximize what we have.
