Thank you both for this broadcast. I really appreciate your enqiury into this condition. I admire Dr Babak's compassion and approach. I am a formerly healthy 63 year old Australian woman who has spent the last 9 months in painful decline. As part of bloodwork in confirming a diagnosis of Polymyalgia rheumatica my blood calcium levels were found to be almost 13 and PTH was high also. I have been through the specialist roundabout, testing and imaging. I have osteoporosis, and I am finally having surgery to remove a parathyroid adenoma. Luckily for me my experienced surgeon operates through my local public hospital for free. I am aware how wonderful that is compared to the USA medical model. I am hoping for a significant improvement after the surgery. I have to say my attentive GP who I had never been to before picked all this up immediately.

I’m sorry, this docs recommendations are wholly inadequate. Vit D and drugs are not going to fix the problem. There are many minerals required in addition to calcium, AND Vit K2 is required to direct the calcium, especially supplements, where to deposit in the body. If you are deficient in K2, calcium gets deposited in arteries. With K2, calcium is directed to bones. Here’s a summary of what else is needed: www.betterbones.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/20keybonenutrients.pdf

I work with breast cancer survivors and people with osteoporosis in the rehab space. Clients tell me daily about the severe changes in their quality of life based on taking Aromatase inhibitors and blocking their endogenous estrogen. They usually do not have a full understanding of the relative risk reduction vs absolute risk reduction. They may be told it will reduce their risk of recurrence by 25%. But they don't understand that may mean the difference between an 8% risk to a 6% risk over 5-10 years of treatment. They also have no idea the risk of osteoporosis from this treatment and the other cancer treatments down the road. The advice I hear that is given for bone health is way off the mark of the current guidelines. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, for sharing this important information.

Balance exercise (static, dynamic and reactive) is the best single best physical intervention to prevent fractures for OP. After that Strength exercises, posture exercises, and bone loading exercise like power or impact moves. Sadly, walking which is often the advice given, is usually inadequate for bone health, even though it's very beneficial for so many other health metrics.

So enlightening! Just this month, I reached menopause. I had bilateral pulmonary embolism 13 months ago and have been told I can't touch estrogen ever again (could have been birth control pills for 16 years, or the COVID I had three weeks prior, or both). I have horrible joint pain (Xray showed arthritis and osteoporosis, at 56) and heart palpitations, among 6-7 other symptoms. What if estrogen cannot be the answer for me? I can’t imagine that anyone would have tinnitus louder than I have - that’s how loud it feels to me. When I developed it after a surgery for otosclerosis I thought I would go crazy. It was extremely loud and very high pitch. My head felt like it was going to explode and I wanted to clench my teeth and squeeze that horrible sound out of my head. It was very scary, hard to go to sleep, hard t o concentrate, hard everything. I was 38 years old with two small children. I had not ever heard of mindfulness, but for some reason I decided to “face” the noise and listen to it attentively. I wanted to lose the fear. I heard it. I laid down and closed my eyes and listened. Then I told myself it was “my sound” (because I could not explain to anyone what it sounded like) and that I needed to embrace it. From that day one I found peace and accepted it and it does not bother me. I am 63. The sound is still extremely loud (feels like it’s coming out of my eyes and nostrils when I pay attention to it) but most of the time I don’t hear it because my brain is concentrating on other things. Surprisingly, even when all is quiet (like going to sleep or standing on my skis on a snowy mountain or listening to soft music or talking quietly with my husband or granddaughter) I don’t hear it. I have metal inside both my ears. Not a candidate for the study. Good luck and thank you.
