Riding a Funicular to Petrin Park in Prague
Hailing from the flatlands of Ohio in the Midwestern USA; we weren't exactly familiar with a "funicular" before we saw one in action. However, this is one of the options within Prague's extensive public transit network - intrigued, we knew we had to give it a try.
Essentially, the best way I can describe a funicular is a train/elevator hybrid. Two trains sit at either end of a straight rail line, rising directly up a steep slope. The trains fill with passengers either at the bottom or top stations, then move in unison (one going up, one going down - like the counterweight on an elevator) along the track. Sometimes - as is the case in Prague - there are additional stations/stops along the slope as well.
If you're interested to learn more about funiculars I'd recommend Wikipedia; however if you want to know what it's like to ride one in Prague I'd recommend this video. Stay tuned after the ride for some bonus footage of us exploring Petrin park (at the top of the hill) and walking our way back down to the city. Tree-lined trails, picturesque views, and some interesting diversions along the way.

Exploring Prague, CZ

Without a doubt, Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe if not the entire world. From amazing architecture and grand cathedrals, to massive public squares, to picturesque canals and urban green spaces (complete with river wildlife!) you'll never stop uncovering gems on any visit to Prague. As such, it was hard to keep my camera down during our time in the city - resulting in this ...
11 Minutes of Tuk Tuk Rides In India
Переглядів 340Рік тому
Riding in a tuk tuk (or autotaxi) is a fundamental part of the Indian experience. While these three-wheeled vehicles can surely be found in many places across the globe, India takes them to an extreme level. Pretty much every other vehicle on the road here is a tuk tuk, and pretty much anytime you step out onto a public street you'll be offered a ride in one. Prices - like so much else in India...
A Visit to The Red Fort - Delhi, India
Переглядів 68Рік тому
Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned construction of the Red Fort in 1638, when he decided to move his empire's capital from Agra to Delhi. Today, this gigantic complex (200 acres enclosed by over 1.5 miles of wall) is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Delhi. We took a tuk tuk ride from our hotel in "New Delhi" over to the neighborhood ...
Touring the Sites of Jaipur, India
Переглядів 28Рік тому
There are many sites to visit in Jaipur, the Pink City of Rajasthan. With so many options, the best way to sightsee is by hiring a tuk tuk driver for the day. Fortunately, these are not in short supply. We spent a full day during our time in Jaipur on a "self-guided" tuk tuk tour. We hired the driver from outside our hotel, then made our way to several sites in and around the city. Our first st...
Exploring Agra - The "Baby Taj" and Agra Fort
Переглядів 95Рік тому
Agra's most famous landmark is, of course, the Taj Mahal - documented in our previous post. However, this is not all the city has to offer. The day after our visit to the Taj at dawn, we hired a tuk tuk driver to take us around to some other sites. First up was the Tomb of I'timād-ud-Daulah - also known as "the Baby Taj." This is a 17th-century tomb built in a similar style to the Taj Mahal - m...
Hiking and Spelunking Around Fujisan

While the mountain itself is obviously the primary draw, the region around Mt. Fuji is not lacking for areas to explore and natural beauty to discover. The whole area is comprised of volcanic (igneous) rock, and is home to several very large cave systems. There are also multiple gorgeous alpine lakes to enjoy, and the region is carpeted with evergreen forest. We spent several days near Mt. Fuji...
Japanese Travel Day - Osaka to Mt. Fuji

Japanese public transportation is world-renowned - during our month in the country, we definitely learned why. Apart from taking a van ride to the airport on our way out (offered by our hotel for free, otherwise we wouldn't have) we spent our entire time in the country without using a car - it just wasn't needed! Pretty much every corner of the country is accessible through a mix of buses, tram...
A Day Among The Deer - Exploring Nara, Japan
Переглядів 39Рік тому
These days, Nara Japan is famous for one major thing. Wild, yet tame deer roam throughout the entire city among the crowds of tourists. For 100 yen ($0.75 USD) you can buy "deer crackers" to hand feed them yourself. The deer have even learned to "bow" in in order to ask for some (when they are being polite, some will also head-butt or nip). Beyond the deer though, Nara is full of amazing histor...
8 Minutes of Hand-Feeding Snow Monkeys at Iwatayama Park - Kyoto, Japan
Переглядів 167Рік тому
The Arashiyama District in Kyoto, Japan is home to Iwatayama Park, a unique area where hundreds of wild Japanese Snow Monkeys exist peacefully alongside humans. The monkeys are definitely wild, as many signs around the park will warn. The monkeys are used to the presence of humans, however, and will casually hang out mere inches from you! While you're not allowed to bring any outside food into ...
Exploring Arashiyama in Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto, Japan is mainly known for its long history (founded in 794) and is full of palaces, temples, and old markets. We spent several days exploring these sites, but also took a day to rent bicycles and explore the Arashiyama district on the western outskirts of the city. Arashiyama is situated on the banks of the Ōi River, and offers great views from a main bridge. The district (like much of K...
Out to the Yomiuri Giants Ballgame in Tokyo, Japan
Переглядів 3,1 тис.Рік тому
Attending a baseball game in Japan is one of the best ways to experience both the similarities and differences between Japanese and American culture. On the surface things appear similar - game rules are (nearly) identical, fans dress in team colors and cheer on the team, vendors sell food/drinks in the crowd, etc. - but being there you experience all of the little differences. To name just a f...

The Best Hike in Busan - Igidae Coastal Trail
Переглядів 396Рік тому
Despite its population of 3.5 million, it is surprisingly easy to find nature in Busan. Case in point is the Igidae Coastal Trail, easily reachable by several bus/metro lines. The trail follows a 4.7km (3 mile) path along the rugged coastline, with stairs (so, so many stairs) tracing up and down the cliff sides. Along the way you're treated to spectacular views of the Eastern Sea, as well as th...
Riding the Haeundae Beachside Train - Busan, Korea
Переглядів 41Рік тому
On the north side of Busan you'll find several beachside districts and neighborhoods. Arguably the most famous of these is Haeundae Beach, a 1km long stretch of white sand completely surrounded by urban development. It is possible to hike here, but we took advantage of one of the more unique experiences on offer - the Haeundae Beach Train. For a small fee (about $7USD) you can ride the train ba...
