Welcome to PaperMusicbyPaulM. "Paper" in the name refers to paper music rolls used on player pianos. Some of the rolls I'm presenting can be a hundred years old or more! Enjoy hours of music created from my lifelong collection of piano rolls. I built a equipment used in converting my old paper piano rolls to MIDI files. Videos are created from MIDI files turned into WAV files on studio software programs. In this way, recordings are clear and always in tune with no background sounds. As 2025 progresses, I will be presenting more realistic piano sounds as well as higher levels of expression.

Wow. This is the tune that Bix recorded.
Glad you enjoyed it!
When music was music! 😊
Glad you liked it!
I heard a little bit of My Hindoo Man as well.
I know what you mean.
Is this run by midi or a roll? If it is a roll, what type? I saw one at some point that looked similar to this one. I hate to bombard you with questions but I need answers. 😆 It’s a beautiful instrument and it sounds just as good. Thanks for sharing.
This is a 1925 Tangley Calliope I owned and restored about 15 years ago. It's an original roll operated model that plays type "A" rolls. It sold through Morphy Auctions before I moved out of PA. This was the 3rd Tangley I restored.
These titles never fail to amaze! 😅
I like your piano!
May the algorithm guide many the lucky listener here!
I'm glad you enjoyed the music. Best, Paul
Is there a transcription of this roll available?
Thank you for writing. I'm not a piano player. There are a number of young people who play piano and study piano rolls on one of the Facebook groups I belong to. The subject has come up on the forum before. I suggest you join Facebook's group "Player Piano Talk" and post the query there. Best, Paul
Why you don't show the piano roll?
Thank you for writing. My channel is made from old paper piano rolls recorded and played digitally. This year 2025, I will begin adding expression to the recordings. I've been working on adding expression to 88 note piano rolls for some time. Best, Paul
@PaperMusicbyPaulM that's good thanks for answering me
Deserves more views and likes. :)
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have many rags and early two-step ragtime rolls posted. Thank you for visiting. Best, Paul
Cool arrangement!
There's a 50s QRS arrangement of Hindustan that's similar. I do have "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue" posted. You may enjoy that if you haven't heard it already.
You're an excellent piano player! Have you listened to the Mexican versions of "Maple Leaf Rag", "Bumble Bee Boogie" & "Tin Roof Blues"? They were arranged by the same fellow who owned the company.
The opening notes are supposed to be Japanese, not Chinese. They're from the overture to Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Mikado".
You certainly know your music!
Note what it says on the sheet music: This was performed by Evelyn Nesbit, a model/chorus girl notorious for her involvement in "the crime of the century", in 1906. She was "the girl in the red velvet swing", and the reason why her jealous husband, Harry K. Thaw, murdered Stanford White. She used her notoriety to embark on a vaudeville tour. (As one does.)
I hadn't heard of Evelyn until now. A sad story. I'll read more about her. The writing on the tablecloth varies from one issue to the next. A common practice with sheet music.
Do you know if there is anywhere where I can find a MIDI scan of this roll?
There are copies of the Virtuoso brand available free on Robert Perry's site in New Zealand and also on the IAMMP site. This is not the same arrangement that I've posted.
Love this roll
So glad you enjoyed this Richard! I've concluded Eubie was a very hard working man. He must have spend a great deal of time producing all those Melodee rolls.
is this an artificial recording or real one?
All of the recordings on my channel are made from MIDI files. Rolls are recorded as MIDIs here, and then they are posted. Most all of these videos go along with my listings of rolls that I'm selling on Ebay. I hope to produce videos with a high level of expression and better sound early in the new year. Best, Paul
@@PaperMusicbyPaulMDo you have George Gershwin's verison of the roll, I know he has one of his own. Also, you able to sell the rolls as sheet since you have the midis? Cuz I've been hunting for the Chinese Blues sheets for years.
I like the way you played Fig Leaf. I would like to hear more. I'm not sure what you're asking? I guess you are looking for the sheet music? That I don't have. I probably have a copy of the Chinese Blues on roll I could sell. It would not be the Gershwin version. Let me know.
@@PaperMusicbyPaulM im looking specifically for gerswhin's version, but thank you for cooperating. I do plan to record more pieces but i dont have a PC right now. But subscribe and when they'll come you'll get notified
Thank you, Paul, for all these amazing, wonderful piano rolls!! This roll may have been mislabeled as it's exactly the same as another roll you posted: Maurice's Irresistible Tango. I'm not sure which one this is, but I'm guessing this is the tango. Two suggestions: Could you record these at a slightly higher volume (I always have to turn up the volume when I play them and if I forget to turn the volume down, other videos are too loud)? Secondly, would it be possible to show us a video of the keyboard as the roll plays? If you have that capability, seeing the piano keys being depressed would add so much! You've posted a lot of fantastic rolls so keep up the great work!! Once your site is discovered by more enthusiasts, you should have a lot more views!
Thank you for pointing out the conflicting videos. This is the correct one. I'm reposting Maurice's Tango now. Please write again if you find other mistakes. Presently, I've posted videos made from MIDI files. All my files are playing at about the same volume with no expression. I hope to produce music in the new year with a high level of expression added. That's when I'll choose an appropriate volume level relative to other music channels. Most all of these videos are presented with my Ebay roll sales. Since this is all digitally produced, there is no piano involved. Next year I will be adding visual effects.
@@PaperMusicbyPaulM Thanks for your reply, Paul, and reposting the correct file for Maurice's Irresistible Tango! It makes sense that these are scans of piano rolls converted to midi (that's great technology for preserving rolls which originally only existed on perishable paper). It sounds like you have great plans for the new year! I look forward to them. Thanks again for all these postings! Rob
Excellent!! 👍👍 Might this roll soon be for sale on a certain eBay site? 212..... From your piano to mine... we've done it before. 😉
Yes! This roll will be posted on Ebay tomorrow night (Sunday) at 9 PM eastern time. Hope you get it if it's something you want.
@PaperMusicbyPaulM It is! I've bought several from you. One of the most recent purchases was "Then I'll Be Happy " back in the early part of November. I will for sure keep my eye open for this roll!
@@PaperMusicbyPaulMUnfortunately I missed my chance. 😢 I saw it, browsed your other rolls and came back and it was gone. I did get "Perhaps"
Sorry you missed it. The song comes up sometimes, but it's hard to find on the Atlas label. Perhaps is a great roll too!
@PaperMusicbyPaulM In all your travels, you haven't come across a copy of I'm A dreamer (aren't We all) on Imperial, have you? I've been looking for that one. I am also looking for The American Spirit of 1918 by Herman Kornbaugh.
Really nice. Thanks.
So glad you enjoyed the music.
A Raymond Scott composition! I wonder if his "Powerhouse" was ever released on piano rolls.
Scott's first name didn't show when I was researching this roll. I wondered why it kept linking Powerhouse and Looney Tunes. As far as I know Powerhouse (which is great!) has never been cut. There used to be a couple pretty good MIDIs that were made by scratch someplace on the internet. I've played this roll dozens of times through the years. I love it!
Where on earth are you finding all these rare rolls?
I collected rolls for 45+ years beginning in 1973. This channel was started when I began posting MIDIs from rolls I'm selling on Ebay. I hope to post many videos in the coming year.
I visited your channel. You have a very good piano!
@@PaperMusicbyPaulM I’ve been collecting for about a year and a half now and have about 1,000 rolls. 700 are standard 88 note, the rest are varying formats. Simplex Piano Player, Angleus, Aeolian Grand, Standard 65 note, and Standard 58 note. (yes, surprisingly the last of those exists). In terms of ragtime I might have 10 originals at most. I’m glad that you like my piano! The Bush and Lane you restored for Artis Wodehouse is fabulous!
That’s a long time! Were the rags especially hard to find?
A thousand rolls is a lot! I'm not sure what a 58 note Standard looks like. Is that the kind with square drive holes? I owned the Bush & Lane for 30? years. I restored it in 1987. I played thousands of rolls on it. Touched up the player some before selling it to Artis. She does a great job with her recordings. Also, I have never heard any other person who can coax so much great music from reed organs.
I am surprised that the litigious Victor Herbert (1859-1924) apparently didn't sue over this disfigured version of his piece.
Classical pieces were "ragged up" also. I have "Desecration Rag" & "Operatic Nightmare" posted. "Teasing The Classics" was very popular but I don't have that one posted. There are others.
I've long wanted to hear an original player piano version of Russian Rag and this is brilliant, many thanks for posting
So glad you enjoy it!
This is so good!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Even though Majestic was part of the Pianostyle company, Majestic rolls have a more natural sound. All the depression era rolls are so hard to find.
Not sure if you got this message. Carl made a roll of Riverside Rag. I’ve never heard another roll of this. Must be rare. It was used on two vinyl records. This one and one of Harvey Roehl’s. When I told Carl about Harvey Roehl’s,he was mad that he didn’t give him credit. He wrote him a letter and Harvey apologized to him. Carl put the Cord rolls on this roll. Great memories of Carl. ua-cam.com/video/ckr1BsFx8VM/v-deo.htmlsi=6DosSI7gLyymRZdX
Carl let me borrow (with reluctance) each of his rolls so I could make MIDI files. I borrowed a couple at a time from what I recall.
ua-cam.com/video/ckr1BsFx8VM/v-deo.htmlsi=6DosSI7gLyymRZdX. This was probably the only Barkerolle that was on a record. Harvey Roehl also recorded. I’ve never heard another roll of Riverside Rag. Notice the cord rolls.
Hi Frank! I think you left this comment on the wrong roll. Anyway, I listened to Harvey's recording. That's Carl's roll for sure. Riverside Rag is rare on piano rolls. It was punched on a Wurlitzer coin piano roll. That's the only other version I'm aware of.
Thanks so much for posting!
My pleasure!
Thanks so much for posting!
Glad you liked it!
Thank tons for uploading these fantastic piano rolls-- Joy Rag my latest favorite, and Chimes too.
Glad you are enjoying them!
This isn't Rackety Rag. This is Black Diamond Rag.
Yes, you're right! Thank you for pointing this out.
@ your channel is just great. Keep it up! Thanks.
Really great pianism!
I'm so glad you enjoy the music!
Great roll Paul!
There are a lot of hidden gems in later rolls. I bought as many 1960s Aeolian's as I could find.
Good tune and different from "Lucy's Sextette"
I'm glad you like it. Next Sunday night I'll be posting Malvin Franklin's "Elephant Rag".
What a fun Fox Trot. Cool piano roll.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Great rare rag!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
What an absolutely delightful song! Thank you for posting. I really enjoyed this roll.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Next Sunday night I'll be posting two more rolls played by Lee Sims.
@PaperMusicbyPaulM For sure, I'll look forward to those rolls! I lost out on an opportunity to get Sims "Talking To The Moon" this week, and it's just downright discouraging! 🤨 In your online sales activities, you don't happen to have a copy of that one, do you? I've bought several rolls from you. They ship to zip code 84058.
@@SevenPlus65 I checked on that Lee Sims roll for you. As far as I can tell I don't own a copy.
This is the same arrangement exactly as the Ampico one.
Hmm, I wonder how that worked out?
Somehow seems much quieter than usual.
I'm hoping to produce recordings with a lot of expression this coming year.
Very good video. Do you have the video of the piano in action for this music ?
The piano music on my channel is totally digital. Piano rolls are converted to MIDI. The music is produced from a soundcard.
@@PaperMusicbyPaulM Thank you for your response. I understand. In any case, know that I really appreciate your videos with piano rolls. :)
Nice hot number never heard it I'm gonna look for it
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have this going up for auction starting next Sunday night 12-8-24 on Ebay for a seven day auction. Starting bid is $9.95 under my Ebay name new-matic.
Thanks for your great postings. Can you post any of Carl Barker’s. Barkerolle rolls?
You can find Carl's Sweetness Rag & Sugar Cane now. Enjoy!
Thanks for your great postings. Can you post any of Carl Barker’s. Barkerolle rolls?
I'll make a point of it. I bought many rolls from Carl and I had all the rolls he hand cut. They're great! He was such a nice person.
Thanks! Looking forward to hearing them. Sweetness Rag and Sugarcane Rag were my favorites!
He was a great friend! I used to buy new QRS rolls from him. He always let me play any of his rolls.
😎👍🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed the music.
Tickled those ivories he did!
Yes, he certainly did. Glad you enjoyed the music.
I don't understand that date 1926 as the copyright on the sheet music is 1928
Thank you for pointing this out. 1928 is correct. This is a reproduction label and the date is off.
Hi. I like THREE things here. The music. The sound of piano. And also I like so good player pianos. A nice day.
I'm so glad you enjoy the music!
👋👋👋
I enjoy your piano roll recordings as well!
Great Roll !!! Never see one of them (joplin) in Argentina... I'll still look for them...
And not many tangos here! I wish there were.
Hermoso rollo !! gracias por compartirlo
Aeolian sold a number of Broadway show medleys.
Hi, Paul, I am doing a documentary on Paul Laurence Dunbar who worked on Clorindy with Cook. Could you please tell me where I might get a high res scan of the Clorindy label you display here?
Also, is the music heard really from the Piano Roll? And, if so, is it copyright free?
@@FrederickLewis-t6k Thank you for asking about this important music. You can find me on Facebook "Player Piano Talk". Yes, this music is made directly from the roll. Early rolls are made by in-house staff arrangers who work from sheet music.
George Gershwin didn't write this tune. It's by Brown, Hanley, and King
Thank you for pointing this out. I had this confused with his "Yankee Doodle Blues".
