Africanized bees can be very dangerous not only for the beekeeper but also for the neighborhood. As soon as I see any aggressive behavior they get 2 strikes and on the 3rd one they are out and I replace the queen. Great video and thanks for taking some stings for our education!!

Wow! You have some not so nice bees. I’m wondering what your previous 2-3 inspections were like? Did they have aggressive tendencies that evolved over time? We had a tough experience two years ago that went from sweet and easy to extremely aggressive and they stung Reza. more than 30 times as he just opened the lid. The hive had a ferral queen move in when we didn’t notice. We requeened that hive and the adjacent one because we got confused. I never want that to happen again! I’m glad you and others weren’t too bad off. Do you think hitting them with sugar water would bring down their aggression any better than smoke? Thanks for posting!

It was once upon a time a nice hive. At some point we had an unmarked queen taken over. It took awhile and once we noticed the aggressiveness we knew we had to re-queen. So, about a month later we went in to re-queen and it was "Huston we have a problem." Now we had to change gears for safety to ourselves and the neighbors. Always split if they are REAL BAD. Then go back 3-4 days later. When we went back to check on the splits we could work them to find the queen. It took to inspections to find and cage the feral queen. We will re-queen in a couple days. I once had to split a Africanized into 5 separate boxes to be able to work them.

Great technique Jay. I understand that the Ariicanized bees are excellent honey producers but man, they are over the top! I don't have your skillset or patience but what will be the deciding factor that euthanizing the colony is the better way to go?

Good question. Safety. If you are working with a hive like this, YOU HAVE TO BE QUICK. In and out. That's part of the secret.

Yes, Africanized bees a great honey producers. That's what brought them to South America in the 1950's. The trade off is not worth it. They wanted to bread in gentle genetics with the honey production. But, they got loose and made their way north. Reaching the USA in the 1980s.
