    Hello, I got delphinium seeds germinated in a jiffy starter kit under grow light. I did the moist towel method in the fridge for 4 weeks. None of them sprouted on the towel but quickly germinated once sowed. When should I remove the humidity dome? Thanks

    Does anyone have any idea how much you feed the seedlings w/ fertilizer at these early stages?

    • @dowdeswellsdelphiniums3868
      @dowdeswellsdelphiniums3868 8 місяців тому

      It depends what you are sowing them in. Most seed raising mixes have a slow release fertiliser in them already - and if so, you don't need to feed them (just water). If you are sowing in the ground, or in mix that has no fertiliser, then feed them half strength fertiliser while they are little and gradually increase the dose as they grow.

    Hi again from Qld Australia I live in the subtropics and was wondering if my delphinium seeds should be cold stratified on a damp surface in the fridge to help with germination? It is mid April here and our temperatures are still between 24-27 C day time, and 14-18 C night time. I need to grow them on during our cooler months so that the humidity is lower so I am eager to get the seeds germinated. What do you suggest? Really appreciate your help. Thank you

    • @dowdeswellsdelphiniums3868
      @dowdeswellsdelphiniums3868 Рік тому

      The seeds have already spent a period in the 'cold' at our nursery before sale, so they should germinate on contact with water. However, the seedlings may struggle a bit in the heat - I would put them in a lightly shaded spot. We find they don't make fast seedling growth at temperatures over 25C, but the germination is pretty much automatic from the initiation of water to the seed itself.

    Thank you. I am just wondering if after you cut off the top, if you then transplanted the plant and planted it deeper. Thanks.

    Thanks for the detail on this. I guess for me it is necessary to sacrifice the height in the first year for more blooms. Important for gardener's to know that this only applies to first year flowering as in the second and following years the plant should produce a number of leaders.

    Do you need to cold stratify delphinium seeds?

    i live in zone 3 in canada. planted seeds i ordered from you a couple years ago. started seeds indoors under lights and winter sowing. both methods sprouted, however, indoor started in march produced best seedlings. the plants bloomed first season. as i live by the lake where there is a lot of wind, i really like these shorter plants and their sturdiness last summer we suffered climate collapse record flooding, destroyed my 12 raised beds and 1000's of flowers i had established in the meadow along the lake. thanks for this video, makes complete sense, excellent presentation. ordered the pumice so i have it on hand when ready to start the rest of the seeds from you.

    Thank you for the instructions! Did you use stratification after planting the seeds? in some literature it is written that it is necessary

    • @dowdeswellsdelphiniums3868
      @dowdeswellsdelphiniums3868 10 місяців тому

      For our delphiniums you don't need to stratify. We do that as part of our preparation for sale of the seed - it is cold stored prior to sale

    Well done Terry & Katrina! A little bird brought my first Delphinium to my garden and I grew the seed on and have had a marvellous display for many years. Lately my garden has made way for my new passion, Paeonies, so I only have a few Delphiniums but would love to try yours. We now have a spring Paeony show here in Christchurch, perhaps you would enjoy that. Cheers, Michele

    Thank you for your informative video! I live in Australia. Now I know why my delphiniums seedlings keep dying. I went to have look inside the moist soil that my one large seedling 🌱 was in, only to find a few fungus gnats flying out! 😩 Can wisterias be grown without a strong support?

    • @Grrrnthumb
      @Grrrnthumb 2 роки тому

      No, they usually always need a support. I did see one "tree" trained by bringing 3 separate vines together and weaving them into a a trunk. It still needed support for some years to get woody enough to support itself. It was incredible seeing the flowers hang down under a tree-like canopy.

    Can you reuse the seeds that grow from the top?

    • @bubblerings
      @bubblerings 3 роки тому

      Yes, most delphiniums and the (annual) Larkspurs make seeds as the flowers wither and ripen. -But, then the energy of the plant goes into seed production. ( Unless the experts say otherwise, I believe that your remaining flower stalks will grow and look better, if you cut the old stalk down, instead of letting it make seeds)
