2024 Maypop Passiflora Incarnata Incense update / food forest perennial vine progress / fall garden
Переглядів 3014 днів тому
Thanks to @snowangel1066 for nudging me for this update! The main vine survived the winter and put up a few new shoots about 6 inches from the original planting sites, but weather conditions have kept it from being very aggressive, on the whole. Thank you for your visit! Remember: electrons move through the openings your thoughts create in reality.

Love and blessings to all. Kniphofia - who doesn't love a crazy-beautiful plant with a crazy-fun-too-say name? Especially when the times might make you feel as though everything is full-boar crazy, and you're falling down a deep well of fear, anxiety, and anger. As a Scorpio/Leo Rising, I have found that what lies at the bottom of the well is the Center. Anaretic degrees are what they are; karm...
2023 Maypop Results! / Passiflora Incarnata Fruit Harvest
Переглядів 28211 місяців тому
Planted in mid-May 2023, our three Passiflora Incarnata cuttings yielded nearly 40 fruits in total! A great first year yield...and in fact an acceptable substitution for the ornamental crabapples I left for the birds. Maypop fruit "goo" is a rich, sweet-tart flavor. Each fruit is not completely filled with goo (like other Passiflora species, such as Edulis), but the seed arils are held together...
Cold Snap Clean Up feat. Vinnie / dog in the garden / winter freeze / Passionflower holding pattern
Переглядів 23Рік тому
An inevitable cold snap is upon us Just West of a Food Forest, and Vinnie and I are doing some small chores to get ready. Picking frost-tender and exposed vegetation, moving more leaves onto the exposed tips of the now-dormant figs, covering new baby trees with buckets, and moving at top speed to avoid freezing! An overall warming climate does not mean that lower-than-average times won't happen...

I'm crazy about bitter greens - the more flavorful, the better! Dandelions are available year-round in USDA zone 7, especially with some light leaf mulch to protect the leaves from drying winds and ice crystals. If you don't relish the bitter flavor, experiment using them in dishes the way you would use cooked spinach! Our gardening dogs love and recommend them. Thank you for your visit, and ma...

Here in the Northern Hemisphere (and zone 7, in specific), it is now officially winter according to the Earth's own calendar. If you observe Samhain, may you have a blessed time of reflection and celebration! 4 minutes with blue wood aster / Symphyotrichum cordifolium / broad leaf aster / quick meditation
Переглядів 108Рік тому
Wood Asters bloom in late September through November, depending on how much frost they encounter, and they feed many families of Bumblebees when other flowers have faded into seed heads. Our bees seem to prefer the blue flowers (which we brought with us) to the white (which were sown by sparrows). Hopefully we'll have some large pollinators stay and nest in the yard next spring. Thank you for y...

Moving in and out of our shed to do some grass trimming chores, I spotted a wee Gray Treefrog clinging to the door. Just a short clip to minimize stress - amphibians in general are seriously threatened by pollution and the climate crisis - but a fun find in the late afternoon! Washed Up Stinkbugs / Marmorated Stink Bugs / Simple Solution / Biodegradable / Safe for Plants

Many gardeners spend the summer months battling Japanese Beetles. Now the Marmorated Stink Bugs are maturing, preying on fruits and veggies, and looking for sheltered spots to spend the winter. Home siding, attics, and window air conditioners all fit the bill. But you can easily and safely stop these pests in their tracks using a simple solution of biodegradable, vegetable-oil-based Castile soa...
4 minutes with a flower / chicory in the garden / quick easy meditation / take a break!

Hello! Thank you for your visit Just West of Paradise Garden. We are now 6 days into an 8-9 day stretch without the sun with temperatures in the 60sF (15*-18*C). But there are still flowers around! This is the flower of the common Chicory plant. It is a favorite of all sorts of pollinating insects. I love the leaves in salads or as cooked greens, but this year there is a colony of Yellowjacket ...

Hello! Welcome to Just West of Paradise Garden. The essence of meditation is awareness; not suppressing or ignoring your thoughts, but rather noticing them as they arise in the mind. If your stream of consciousness moves at an overwhelming speed, you can use something as a tool to slow it down, to make it easier to be fully aware of each thought. Some people find that counting or emphasizing th...

I am planning to post an update! We've had Real Life things going on this year, but I do need to catch up with progress and New projects. lol Both Passiflora species are doing OK this year -- our on-and-off drought situation has been challenging for all plants, but we will get fruit from both. 😎 I hope your 2024 has been fruitful, so far!

I think they are - that was suggested by another viewer! The scent is a really amazing match to the beauty of their appearance. The vines are slow to appear this year, but they are spreading. lol

In English, this plant is called "Maypop". It is a cold hardy (native) type of Passionflower. Do you have Passionflower vines in Vietnam?

  • @snowangel1066

Very interesting! Yours seem semi full and had flavor. Although they true maypop interior is pale it does have a slightly yellow hue that your variety seems to lack. You have and amazing vine passiflora hybrid vine! Can’t wait to see your 2024 journey!

The pulp had a very light yellow cast. Our weather was soooo dry all last year, I'm hoping to find a better-developed pulp (and fruit bodies) this year. We're still about 2 months from them reappearing in the yard, so work in progress... =)) (I did save some seeds, but so far, no germination, but the house may still be too cool.) I'm sure hybrids abound anywhere they are grown, which, along with the wild populations, would explain the variability. Photos of P. incense do indeed jive with our blossoms' appearance! Very cool.

@@JustWestie can’t wait to follow your journey! I’m obsessed with these plants especially when these plants grow natively! Prices for Passionfruit are INSANE!

I hope my vines return! The sterile Cerulea had not even died in the cold, but it has no food value, obvs. Although pricing would be an experiment in madness, no doubt, none of the varieties of fruit are available for sale in stores here. I did love the flavor, and it made a nice boost to some apple and pear cores that I saved up for jam. I am considering growing some less hardy P. varieties in the garden this year, and then keeping cuttings over winter. We'll see what unfolds... 😎

I think you might have a rare fruiting hybrid. This looks more like a Passiflora incense wich is a hybrid of incarnata and Cinncinata . Usually hybrids of passionflower are sterile but they can sometimes be self fertile. All the maypop flowers I’ve seen have purple peddles with the slightest white hue to them. Yours are completely dark purple. Very Cool!!!

    • @snowangel1066
      @snowangel1066 8 місяців тому

Also your leaves have five lobes which is a common trait of the incense variety instead of three which is common with the maypop variety. I wonder what the taste is like because the hybrids that do fruit have been known to be bland and less seeds on the inside unfortunately.
