Goats Devour Invasive Shrubs
Two hundred meat goats arrive at a Jasper County woodland to browse invasive honeysuckle and Russian olive. See how an impassable thicket of invasive shrubs is opened up to allow sunlight to reach the ground and support a vegetative layer. These beguiling goats belong to Goats on the Go, a central Iowa prescribed browsing company. In this video, they are herded through the pasture and into the fenced woodland area by Goats On The Go co-owner Aaron Steele.
A couple of weeks after the four-legged restoration ecologists did their work, Prudenterra's chainsaw crew cut and sprayed the stumps of the larger honeysuckle plants. In another year, enough ground vegetation will have grown to carry a prescribed fire across this oak-hickory woodland. Regular prescribed burns will discourage the growth of new invasive shrubs, enabling a diverse community of native species to thrive in their place.

Backyard Woodland Slope Restoration: Phase 1
Переглядів 4646 років тому
Disturbance and stormwater drainage from impermeable surfaces make urban woodlands especially prone to erosion. This summer, we partnered with Legacy Trails to halt serious erosion in a backyard woodland. A woodland slope restoration utilizes the living roots of native plants to hold soil in place, protect buildings from damage, and improve aesthetics and wildlife habitat. First, we modified ti...
Deer Stand View of a Prescribed Burn

Watch as the backfire is lit, and the headfire roars across the prairie to meet it. See the sky disappear, and hear the train-like roar of the wind generated by the fire. Prairie fires can be incredibly fast-moving the events of this video took place in just 25 minutes. Careful preparation and management ensured that the fire stayed within its boundaries. Following the burn, native prairie plan...

Bottomland Bur Oak Regeneration

Oak dominant woodlands were much more abundant throughout Iowa at the time of European settlement in the 1840s-1850s. Prior to that time, thousands of years of fire disturbance had favored oaks, which are adapted to fire. Today, we can still see this evidence in woodlands, where scattered 150-250 year old oak trees are reaching the end of their lives surrounded by basswood and maple trees (whic...
Prescribed Fire for Savanna Restoration

Make way for a new generation of black walnut, shagbark hickory, and black, red, bur, and white oak! This Jasper County, Iowa reforestation project began in August, when the seed nuts were harvested. While the nuts were soaked and stored in a walk-in cooler, the soil bed was prepared with herbicide to terminate existing vegetation. Then, the soil was lightly disked shortly before planting. A fe...
Managing a Forest

Removing undesirable trees and shrubs is necessary for species of higher wildlife habitat and timber value to thrive. In this video, see the removal of invasive honeysuckle, and girdling of undesirable trees during an oak savanna restoration near Nevada, Iowa.
Seeding Prairie

Late fall is a great time to seed prairie the freeze-thaw weather helps seeds work their way into the surface of the soil. Prairie seeds tend to be small, and as a result, they have a high success rate when broadcast seeded.

Learn how to maximize wildlife habitat and timber production in your woodland. In this video, forester Luke Gran will teach you how to strategically remove poorly formed and low value trees so that trees of high wildlife and timber value can thrive. Strategic Tree Selection is based on a common forestry practice called Crop Tree Release. See this publication by Perkey and Wilkins for details: w...

Oaks have a special adaptation that is called "hypogeal germination" which allows for the seedlings to vigorously resprout after a fire burns. There are many other adaptations that tend to promote fire - their leaves are more volatile to fire, their bark of older trees is very thick which tends to protect their living tissues inside the bark from fire. This burn is being done to promote oak regeneration which, in parts of Iowa is severely lacking and is a major threat to the continuation of oaks in Iowa hardwood forests.
