great series mate good content good information
Thanks for uploading these! I’m a new beekeeper and I’m trying to id our local trees - I’m in Melbourne but your content is still relevant 😊. So glad I found your channel!
Thankyou! I'm so glad its useful for you!
❤
Beautiful plant, whacked in a few at my place, sandy soil and dappled light. Struggled to get going but once the got a foothold they thriving
Nice! I find that mine now are suffering a bit in the hot afternoon sun and drier conditions so maybe watch for that
I would suggest the cooling was caused by the Antarctic winds created by the lack of continental connectivity down there. Not breaking the flow and slowly building in circular system. Dry and cold as. Probably mentioned in the doco lol
Likely correct. The doco didn't mention eucs specifically however but a good theory. The doco stated they are still arguing about causes - lol
Beautiful nature Beautiful view Thank you very much for sharing Good luck to us
How is it propagated?
By seeds and cuttings probably. Get the Incisa one with the pink flowers. Such an amazing smell. You won't believe. And it stays on your hands for a long time but faintly. Way better than soap. This is the best gift Australia can give to the world.
All prostanthera can be propagated by cuttings relatively easily. Similarly to its worldwide relatives (mint, lavender, rosemary etc).
@@TemplarX2 thanks a bunch for the response & tips
@@arcanebotanica2503 thanks
Prity cool plant probably won't go in upper northeast usa
Thankyou. Yes I dont think so - I assume you get snow. That would likely take it out. I am not even sure how it goes with frost - probably not well.
Nice👍💛
Loving these videos.
Mate! This couldn’t have come at a better time. Living in Northwest Sydney and started classifying local Gums recently… having a hard time. Using EUCLID-ID but still tripping up. Thank you sir!
Cheers! So glad you are getting something valuable from them. Hopefully you can easily find the other eucalypt vids
Can it be turned into dye?
I believe it can but not as good as other non-native indigos.
How about hardiness zones ?@@arcanebotanica2503
So much variety in your garden. Loving all the commentary too. So many parts to the garden, you must work on different areas at different times. Looks like a lot of continuous work but lovely too.
Wonderful listening and enjoying your very knowledgeable talk around your garden. Looking forward to more.
Great to see your front garden. Looking forward to seeing more.
Interesting. I just got some short of Prostanthera as a tea herb, dry small leaves with the stem and has purple dried flower at the tips. I asked the person for some mint tea and they gave me this. Then I just searched for mint tea and I saw the classic mint leaves and I was like, what did I even get? Smells minty, tastes like it. Looks pretty close to this one in the video but there are about 5 different variants of it. I wonder how close these Prostantheras are to the mint plant. Do you think they have the different benefits than the classic big/wide mint leaves?
Do you know anything about the use of this plant for natural dyeing / ecoprinting ?
I have the Prostanthera ovalifolia 'Variegata.' I regret buying it. If you live in Zone 10, plant it in the "partial shade" area. It will not handle this zone's extreme summer sun; it will wilt, even after all the care you have tirelessly given it. Yeah, ignore the "light need" suggestions on most online pages; "Full Sun" will definitely hurt it. It is a short-lived plant, so I have been told too late, but not by the nursery, from which I have purchased it. It is interesting that the nursery no longer sell this sad plant. Consider this post a heads up.
Thanks for the comment - yes many Prostanthera spp. are known to be short lived in the garden - say 2 to 3 years. I am monitoring an Australian endangered population (P. densa) where it seems they live for 10 years at least (in the wild). One of the trade-offs is that they are easily propagated from cuttings. I grow P. ovalifolia here in Sydney (Aus) and it does really well. It would likely not tolerate a hotter climate too well. But I don't think that's the plant's fault. So I disagree with you a little - as it is best to grow plants suited to your environment. Not much point installing plants not suited to your climate. Although - we can always trial and error I guess. I do align with you in that local nurseries often don't care about this aspect enough.
Can you get a close up of the actual bush so that we can actually see it?
Yes - this is needed to improve these videos. My young son is doing the filming and is getting better as we go along. I dont have access to this plant anymore unfortunately.
Could you please show how to prune and fertilise. Is Dynamic Lifter ok to use? I’ve got one which seems to grow back on itself, ie wraps around itself so have no idea how to prune as I find it difficult to find the ends. Should I hard prune back to the stem? It’s like a tangled ball of wool. Mine could be Hardenbergia Comptoniana, as I’m in WA but not sure. Keeps getting attacked by soft white scale so I feel I must not be caring for it properly. Many thanks for any advice.
You could prune back to about 50 cm of growth from the base. It should reshoot well from that length
Dynamic lifter should be ok but go easy with it though. These peas fix nitrogen through their root nodules and don’t really need nitrogenous fertiliser. Hardenbergia comptoniana has genuine trifoliate leaves with all 3 leaflets large and equal
Hi great informative video, I have just purchased the Hardenbergia white out , and am going to plant it on a picket fence to climb ,, will one plant cover at least 5 metres of fencing? Or would I plant 2 ? I haven’t been able to get clear info on the length of how long it gets ,, thank you
Hi there. Sorry the late reply. We made this video for my sons school assessment but I will try to make some more. Hence, I have been neglecting this a bit. They grow to about 2 m long. Not much longer than that. The issue with them is that they will have foliage up the top but not really much down below after a while. So it is not a really thick dense plant. There are much better Aussie natives to cover fences if you want them. Still they may look good got a while. Maybe plant one plant every 75 cm and prune to encourage more lateral shoots. Hope that helps!
