SOMA Rumble of Ancient Times (RoAT): Sonic Explorations [NoTalking]
Delve into the heart of the Rumble of Ancient Times (RoAT), a unique and experimental 8-bit noise synthesizer and sequencer designed to evoke sounds reminiscent of early computer games and ancient rituals, with a focus on gritty textures, glitchy rhythms, and evolving soundscapes. In this video I explore the instrument's vast sonic palette, showcasing its ability to create a wide range of textures and atmospheres. Enjoy!
The performance was recorded live: the 0-Coast goes through a mixer with stereo reverb and delay send. The stereo mix is then sent through a compressor insert, and finally to a stereo recorder. Finally the recording was lightly mastered in Pro Tools.
If you like the video, please let me know by leaving a like, a comment, or by subscribing to my channel-it really helps. Enjoy!

This Jam Blew My Mind! 0-Ctrl & 0-Coast Live Session [NoTalking]

This video documents an improvised session featuring the 0-Ctrl (sequencer) and the 0-Coast (semi-modular synth) by MakeNoise. These two were designed to work together, and they synergize very well. This performance was in particular an opportunity for me to explore the capability of the 0-Ctrl, not just as a step sequencer, but also as a very expressive controller, with its eleven touch pads. ...

More of the same please!😂
How many minutes you can record (for every track and globally)?
Lyra and Cosmos seems to match perfectly. Another SOMA device on my wishlist. Very good jam.
Glad you like it, thank you for watching!
Oh, really nice jam with your Lyra. Lyra 8 was my first synth when I begun 2 years ago, and I still discover new sonic territories with it. Really an unique machine.
Yes it is a really cool device. I am soon to receive the the Lyra-4, which is the same but a little more compact, with 2 pairs of oscillators instead of 4. We'll see!
I love the SOMA devices. This one is on my wishlist ;-)
Wow, really nice jam. I like to experiment a lot with my Make Noise. I have too the O-Ctrl the O-Coast and the Strega, and dream of a ReSynthesizer
Dope!
Thank you!
Great explanation and demo!
Thank you! I am really happy to share the word, it is such a great device (IMO)
also FYI I made another video with RoAT that you might find interesting
I love how that sounds !
Thank you!
2:22 so pretty
If I didn’t hear it, I would not believe that it has so much capability. I have to get one.
Nice sounds, especially in the beginning. I like that it can be hard or soft sounds depending on where you take it. I'd kill for a version with volume per voice as well, but overall a ton of features for the price compared to almost any drone/noise synth. I like getting a nice sequence going, then using the filter cut to really mellow it out and make it soft, and while you're still on the filter page, hitting the chaos button and hearing a lot of other softer sounds instead of just harsh noise. The manual reads like a math lesson in some parts, so I'm still trying to wrap my head around some of the more advanced parts that are harder to memorize, but again a ton of thought out bang for your buck.
ooooOOoo cool, i'll have to try that technique.
My worry is everything out of timing ⏱️ that works on some organic music loops but if this device had timing ⏱️ correct it be perfect for me so you find this any issues ?
For my purpose the absence of sync/timing is perfect, cause I like having loops of different lengths to create ever-changing combinations. But if you are looking for synced loops, this is not the device you need for sure. I would look instead at some of the multitrack options from Electro-Harmonix
@ thank you 🙏
Excellent stuff, thank you. Great to know that it synchs with other devices... that opens up a lot of possibilities.
Glad it was helpful, and thanks for watching!
Really nice video. There's a lot of choice on UA-cam for Rumble, but yours demonstrated it well and I enjoyed your performance too. Well done.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video :)
Next time can we get some ROAT sync'd to some other things? that'd be great
Will do! In the meantime you can check this video, where I sync the Roat with a drum machine: ua-cam.com/video/xJy45H1muiY/v-deo.htmlsi=s2LT66tFnyIc7Z4u
And thanks for watching!

Awesome sounds. thank *YOU* 🙏
You are welcome, thank YOU for watching :)
Really interesting jam, sounds really good. I play the 0 coast myself, and I love it! Its really interesting to combine it with Strega as well. Im looking forward to get hands on 0-Ctrl as well, But need money right now. Its really fun to sequence with Sq-1 as well. Thank you for this
You are welcome, and thank you for watching! 0-Coast and Strega sounds like a great combo as well :)
Nice😊
Thank you!
I love the color way, how it honors the DX7. Man I love FM synths, and may just have to get one of these. I bet you can create amazing and unique samples with it. Great video!
Thank you for watching! I never noticed the color connection with DX7, thank you for pointing it out.
Excellent work! Just bought a Pulsar-23 and been looking for inspirational videos and this is just what I was looking for. What a machine!!
Thank you! Yes it is a great device. You just reminded me that I should use it more :)
Lol cool thing!
Thank you for watching!
Sounds phenomenal, and certainly very enticing. Good video!
Many thanks!
Beautiful❤
Thank you!
Wow❤
I love mine also, it rules using it as an fm tone oscillator into softpop 2. Not to mention the patching between the two.
Sounds like a great combo!
Hey! I am about to buy a cosmos and do some researching, you have an interesting set of music tools. I own some of them, too, so looking forward, what you did with them, so I might get some inspiration out of it. I have the lyra-8 and didn’t think of pairing it with the mood mk2, yet! Did you use your piano with the cosmos?
I have not tried with piano, bit here is an interesting example by @Stimming_official: ua-cam.com/video/vD_4NGUz4Vk/v-deo.htmlsi=NzRaILPnuob7NZig
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video! Really dumb question, but when you plugged the cable into the hypno, was that straight from the controller?
Yes, controller to Hypno. Thanks for watching!
@@abregegerethank you!
A big fan of ur channel💫 I bought mself a peterlin recently and i use it with my soma roat, both of which your channel helped me decide on their purchase. I love them both and sample them into my sp404mk2 to make ambient tracks. Epic stuff. Thanks for putting ur stuff out there, i love to hear you jams, keep up the great work and blessing for 2025 🤘💫🎛🐽🍀🎩oh and moin moin aus Hamburg⚓️😎
Thank you so much! I am glad that you enjoy these videos. And stay tuned for more, since I don't have any intention to stop making music anytime soon 🤓 Best wishes for 2025 from New York City :)
I love mine ! Soothing drones
Yes, very relaxing. Thanks for watching!
Shall we just get one? Freaking great exploration. Just wondering if your came in with any bugs?
Thank you for watching! I actually recently sold my S-4. It is a great device (especially since the recent update added MIDI sync and fixed (I think) most bugs), but I was just not using it enough to justify keeping it (it is not cheap!).
@@abregegere Ah!! Did some homework at it seems its still a hit and miss on some units and some people selling it quite early in the game. Its hard to be a Beta tester. Will keep in a look out for sure for one. Keep up the good work.
Is there a build vid? Thanks
No I haven't seen a build video (and i did not build this myself). I think I read somewhere that Peter Blasser was planning to make his design open source but I am not sure if that ever actually happened.
A very Krell holiday to you!
Lol thank you!
Hi ! What is the purple waterfall under the synth ?
It's an audio spectrogram, a visual representation of the spectrum of frequencies of a signal as it varies with time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectrogram
Thanks for watching!
13:45
Love the Woovebox. That paired with the Micro Monsta 2 equals jamming all day.
Nice idea, I’ll give it a try!
Love it!
Thanks for watching!
I'm one of those dumbasses who will buy something based on the name so I'm probably going to buy the Rumble of Ancient Times even though I'm absolutely positive I have half a dozen things like it already. Fuck my life and my bank account.
lol! But the RoAT is unique, so I doubt that you have anything quite like it in your collection :)
@@abregegere after watching a few more videos of it, I think you might be right! I've got glitchy things and drone things but not glitchy drone things with all the performance capabilities the RoAT has.
It's amazing how much electronic music has developed.
indeed! Thanks for watching
Is it possible to make a generative patch like this, but send the notes out via midi to control other devices? I love these generative turing machine type patches on Zoia, but would love to feed the signal to some of my analog gear.
Yes, it is very possible. You just need to send the gates and pitch cv to midi out
@@abregegereI built your example today. Worked great! Thank you! In this example the LFO is basically acting as clock right? So could I swap that for midi clock in (so I can sync with my other gear) and then Pitch/gate out to cv/midi to control one of my analog synths for the VCO?
Yes that sound right :)
WHAT A COUPLE!!!😮
Yup! Thanks for watching :)
What a great pedal never seen before is that Broughton! How do you like it? I just love filters so much and this one seems amazing right? Thanks for sharing Is RoAT the best portable synth ever?!😮
Yes it is the Broughton "Low + High Pass Filter" (the name says it all!). These are not resonant filters, I use them mostly to tame the super low and high frequencies when using wild devices like the RoAT, the Lyra, etc. It does the job very well. www.broughtonaudio.com/product-page/low-high-pass-filter
Very nice! I'm in the process of trying something similar with the Cosmos and the Eowave Quadrantid Swarm.
Thanks, and good luck!
I wanna know the name of all of what you have here, it sounds really cool to mess around with
