Chris Dale's Military Museums & History

I enjoy the study of military history and I love museums. On this channel I've filmed some of the military museums and sights that I've been fortunate enough to visit. I should also mention that I'm lucky enough to travel a lot in my job which does help. These videos are only intended as a quick look around the museum galleries with limited and quiet commentary from myself. They are not a close-up, well focused examination of all the museum's collections in detail and perfect lighting. But maybe they're just enough for you to decide if you want to visit and and examine the museum's collection in more detail yourself. I hope they inspire you to go and see more museums in general.
Battle of the Bulge Exhibits, Luxembourg National Military History Museum, Diekirch- MM045
In this video we see an amazing display of WW2 uniforms, weapons and vehicles mostly from the Battle of the Bulge fought in and around Luxembourg. Unfortunately on the day that I visited some parts of the museum were being renovated so there is a further exihibtion of vehicles and of the Luxembourg army itself that I shall have to back back and visit another day. But even bearing in mind that some sections were closed, this is surely still one of the most extensive Second World War museums that I've seen so far and very well worth a visit.

Did the museum told you about Audie Murphy??
No, who's that?
@@chrisdale-militaryhistory Audie was the biggest hero in the WW2 US army.
@@paulwee1924dus I didn't see him mentioned here, although I don't think he served in Luxembourg or at the Bulge did he?
@@chrisdale-militaryhistory Holtzwihr, is it Luxembourg???

The 3rd Reich used USSR weapons SVT-40, T 34, KV 1, Pps! The Wehrmacht used 64 Tanks of the USSR for battles, as well as the Russian army of Ron and Roa, who fought against the Reds + there are alterations, if you get close you can immediately see that the Germans made the tank for themselves! The tank was easy to repair, but there was a problem with the shells! The first Panther tank was made as a good copy of the T 34! Hitler freaked out and the tank was redone!;))))
This guy is a coincedence theorist. There is no coincedence
terrible museum
I just think they need more space to display their great collection.
Pretty much the worst museum in the Netherlands, lot of fake items, fake stories, like the fake T34 outside. They also had Hitlers furniture from the bunker in Berlin at one point which was also fake.
Did my national service there in 1954-56. It’s changed a bit since then.
I hope it brought back good memories.

A major part of Denmark was under Prussia during WWI. So thousands of Danish men had to fight in that war. The Danish National Archives estimate the losses of Danes in the German forces at 6,000. Over 700 Danish merchant sailors and fisherman died, mostly due to vessels torpedoed by German submarines.
Yes, an often forgotten part of history.
Hey buddy there is also a MOD bunker in lampeter
Really? Where is it?
Is the T-34/85 a "Beute fahrzeug" ( German trophy) from the battle?!
Yes, it's a captured Russian tank in German colours.
@@chrisdale-militaryhistory That is a great story.
It's a postwar vehicle, don't believe the nonsense this museum tells people.
No, this tank is built in late 1945. It then went to Czechia. A few decades later (can't remember exactly when) it was bought by the owner of the museum and painted up/modified to look like a german Beute panzer.
@@007-v9p thanks for the extra information.
Not Holland, the Netherlands. The tank is of course Russian (must have been captured), the gun is German, the famous 88........
Thanks for the correction, a slip of the tongue on my part there.
Why is there a russian T34 disguised as a panther tank ?
Good question, it's a captured T34 re-used by the Germans as a 'Beutepanzer'.
Captured and reused possibly? Mark Felton has a video about this.
@@AprilBowser-w6t I believe you're right.
@@chrisdale-militaryhistory Nothing about that is re-used or a Beutepanzer, it's a postwar tank, I think its a Czech Republic vehicle.

Did you visit the Airborne Museum while in Arnhem / Oosterbeek ?
No, not this time. I'm looking forward to seeing that on my next trip to Netherlands.
Great WW2 museum.
Yes indeed, I was very happily suprised by it.
I haven't visited this new Museum but the old had an open yard with barbed wire and posts from a German KZ. A few years ago I visited KZ Buchenwald where several Danes, also the Police, became interned!
What i know of and was told, then they have 1 of the only remaning Freikorps Dänemark uniforms left in the world, i may be wrong, maybe there is some in private collections.
Possibly, if so that's the one I filmed
When you visited, the Memorial was all back to front due to the redevelopment work, but as of 23 September 2024, the old entrance (now called the Commemorative Entrance) reopened, and the Memorial now has a logical flow again. The flow makes much more sense when you start at the front, either with the Roll of Honour and Hall of Memory and then through to First World War Gallery and the rest, or start with FWW and do the Roll of Honour at the end of the galleries. In January 2025, the massive new main entrance will open, and the Memorial will start to see some of the massibely expanded gallery space open up. Aircraft Hall closes in January 2025 for at least 12 months, to enable the link to the brand new ANZAC Hall to be completed and toallow for it to have its major exhibitions re-mounted.
Thanks, I hope I get a chance to visit again and see the new layout.
Might be unwarented but, here is a ww2 "the more you know" thingy: Denmark’s resistance during WWII is a remarkable story of unity. Despite the Nazi annexation, which allowed the Danish government to remain in place and initially imposed milder restrictions, brave resistance groups quickly formed. They gathered intelligence for the Allies and undertook daring sabotage missions. One of their most extraordinary acts was the rescue of over 7,000 Jews in September 1943. After German diplomat Georg Duckwitz learned of Hitler’s deportation orders, he secretly organized their escape to Sweden and alerted Danish authorities. In just days, a network of resistance fighters, Jewish leaders, and ordinary citizens worked together to save lives. While some Jews were sent to concentration camps, over 99% ultimately survived, aided by the Danish-Swedish "white bus" missions. Duckwitz was honored as one of the 'Righteous Among the Nations,' but the resistance preferred collective recognition, highlighting the power of community and courage in dark times.
thanks for the extra information.
Tito was portrayed bye Richard Burton in the 1974 warmovie about Tito. A must watch now.
Thanks for the reminder, I still haven't seen that.

The highest Decorated Foreign Soldier in British Service was Danish SAS Major Anders Lassen! As a Sailor he landed in The UK and joined the Army til he died in Italy with a posthumous V.C. on top of a lot of other Decorations. He is buried in Argenta Gap military Cemetary!
Schalburg corps & Sven Hassel.
I'd say you missed out on the audio guide. There are some cool voice acting plays with different situations that match some og the different settings you walked past... it is based on real persons and situations and gives you a really good feeling of how the ppl were feeling back then... Some of those I remember were a group of resistance ppl making flyers in a kitchen, being scared to be found by the german soldiers. Another was about a group of ppl having to recieve a parachute drop in the dark on a field, being afraid if the incoming planes might be german fighters instead....
Sounds interesting maybe I did make a mistake. Next time I'm in Copenhagen I'll try the audio guide.
Funny fact - One of the Deadliest Wars for the Danish soldiers was the Eastern Front ww2 And ww1 30.000 Danish soldiers were forced to join the German army Around 6000 died
Then millions of fools go rushing into the breech for king and country.
This is the "new" museum, the old had a fire in 2013. Luckily the damage to artifacts was limited to water and ash/sod
So glad they were saved!
Arms museum not war museum last time I checked
Maybe I'm wrong but the museum is called the Krigsmuseet. I don't speak Danish but as I understand it Krig means War and Museet means Museum, no? I'm always happy to be corrected though.
An interesting note about the ship models on display is that many are not models made for the exhibition - they are in fact original scale construction models made as part of the planning process for new navy ships, all of which were kept after the fact and later left in the care of the Danish Naval Museum, which has now been rolled into the War Museum. So really, they're not models of navy ships, rather they're the 'blueprints' the navy ships were based on. A model on display could easily be an original from the 1700s :)
For several years the Naval Model Collection, at first, through many years built for the Kings Approval from the Naval Shipyard, by "the Leader of Shipbuilding (Most likely a minor employee), was housed in the former Naval Hospital, which sadly became sold to be offices, before the colection ended in the War Museum. When it became a Naval, Official Museum, also a Danish Dentist and Model builder became asked to make essential Models from several times and those are still a part of the Exhibition, I suppose? I haven't seen it it since it left its Home for many years.
Thanks for the extra information
The boat at 4:45 was used to sail jews to safety in Sweden. 95% of the danish jews survived. Even the danish jews in the Theresienstadt concentration camp mostly survived due to pressure from Denmark.
They receive "Free Samples" of new weapons from several Major International Factories and the Collection here is sometimes more complete than the Factory's own, so if in doubt, they become asked!!! They have a collection of weapons bought for Tests for the Danish Army and - Navy many years back. And also, equipment for Danish weapon Production! Also, The Rasmussen Revolving Guns may have changed the Border War in 1864 if used by then?
Thanks for that extra information.
In past time a 38cm gun barsel was on display out in the yard , it came from the german warship Tirpitz that was bombed by RAF in 1944 - Four of the guns was salvaged and sent to denmark to be placed in a new build bunker complex at a place called Blåvandshug , the Four 38cm skc34 barrels Got stück at a railstation at the end of the war - 3 barrels Got cut up in pieces at the scrap man and saves before being Melsted and the one 109 tons that survived was sent by rail ti copenhagen were it sat outside for many years before it ended up at the huge bunker festung at Hanstholm at display among the 4 canonemplacements - sadly enough 2 of the bunkers was filled up with sand sometime in the 1980 so only 2 Can be seen - i place to see endeed
They do have a similar and - Functioning 38cm gun in "Battery Vara" in Norwegian Christianssand, as a Major Museums Area with Bunkers, defensive 88mm guns and Ammo Trains. Also mechanical Computers to accept humidity and pressure for the calculating of a shot from a Gun, so it was able to hit within 200m from a 10km distance! The Similar, sadly ruined and scrapped Gun in Hanstholm couldn't hit anything, as its site became built on sand and during Test shots it shaked everything out of adjustment!!
@@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 That gun in norway called the Adolfcanone is a 400 mm gun and not a 38 cm - the germans lost one 400 mm gun during the invasion of norway becauce the ship was attacked and sunk with its cargo in 1940-- go g’et it please🦑

In my younger years me and some friends restored , almost to perfection and driveable , a Hanomag Sdkfz 251 / D . We spent thousands of hours after school on sanding it down and repairing stuff aso ,as we were almost fanatic about it . Then , when it was painted and 99 % i order , some IDIOT !!! swapped it for some totaly garbage from Germany . well one of the fun things that danes usually never mention is that they lost more men fighting on the russian front than they ever did resisting the germans
13:00 it is technically not "civil war uniforms" It was an exchange done in 1858. so more then two years before the war broke out. One set of infantry and one set of cavalry kits was exchanged between the danish army and US army. Some of the items are unique (like the Maclellan saddle that to my knowledge do not exist in the original model in the US)

That's one reason why I'm filming these videos. It seems a lot of museums get dumbed down more and more. At least in the future we'll be able to look back on how they were in the 2020s.
@@bjarkejensen1441 No, it's not. It's one of the worst and most shallow major military museums in Europe, alongside Imperial War Museum in London. Go to Heeresgeschichtliches Museum in Vienna or Les Invalides in Paris if you want to see a great military museum.

As you said, some exhibits were removed for the construction. The Lancaster bomber 'G for George', Japanese midget sub and a short film by Peter Jackson on planes in the First World War. @@greybirdo Thanks for that comment. Actually I did have a some questions to ask of a couple of staff there and they were clearly very educated on the museum and very helpful. You've got a great team there.
NOT pure coincidence! numbers matter! theres a synchronous connect!!
Of course it's possible that the world is ruled by numerical connection. I have seen the A as standing for Austria or Armistice sometimes, but of course that only works for English speakers, not the Austrians or Bosnians. Also why the date of the Western Front armistice particuarly? Of course that date was of major importance to the Western Powers but not so much in the Blakns and former KuK empire. Wouldn't it be equally spooky if it named the date of the St. Germain treaty when Austria-Hungary singed the peace, or Versailles Treaty? Or even Gavrillo's birth date or death date, or Franz Ferndinand's birth date, or the date of the A-H ultimatum to Serbia, or the A-H attack on Serbia or any other numbers of dates that could be considered to be notable? Or maybe the manufacturer only made a small number od cars and designated them all, 11 11 11, then 11 11 12 and this was the eight car or eighteenth if he started with 11 11 01? It is interesting specualtion though and thanks for your comment?
@@chrisdale-militaryhistory >> you bet! I just have fun with numbers; math as magic!
