Edmonton to Jasper is actually 3.5 hours in Edmonton to Banff is 4 hours. Also there are a couple of nice lakes near Edmonton you just have to know where to look if you drive 1.5 hours south to Red Deer and then go west about 20 minutes you will find Sylvan Lake a beautiful little summer Resort with a Long Beach and a few restaurants along the main Street beside the beach
