閉鎖された故・西山英峻先生の道場（ナショナル・カラテ・インスティチュート）に保管されていた16ミリフィルムをデジタル化しました。 Must be from the 1960's, very rare 16mm film footages featuring JKA Karate Masters Frank Smith, Yutaka Yaguchi, Takayuki Mikami, etc.

Please help me identify these 2 Japanese JKA instructors. To me they look like: -Master Yutaka Yaguchi (performing Heian Yondan) -Master Takayuki Mikami (performing Tekki Shodan) ...But I may be completely wrong. This was an old 8mm film that was stored at Master Nishiyama's old dojo in Los Angeles, CA. Appreciate your comments!

In October 2001, Poland honored Nishiyama with the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. The award was presented by the President of Poland, Aleksander Kwaśniewski. 西山先生は2001年、ポーランド国民への長年の空手指導の貢献を認められ、当時の大統領より国家勲章を授与されました。

We moeten weer terug nd soort karate en er geen ballet voorstelling van maken ik train trouwens ook nog zo en weiger iets anders aan te nemen anders zou ik vroeger voor 1973-74 iets verkeerd hebben geleerd en ik weet zeker dd niet zo is
Jy is heeltemaal reg. Ek het met karate in 1969 begin, was in 7/76 tot 6/77 konskript en 82 tot 86 n student wat na werk universiteit toe gegaan het. Toe ek in 1987 weer begin oefen het was dit net swartbelte die wêreled vol. Met die twee vlakke op elke graad kon n student nie n gradering vaal nie. Ekself het op graderingspanele gesit en student gesien wat van oranje na bruin belt gevorder het sonder om te ver eter - dieselfde foute, swak tegniek. Sodra hulle swartbelt kry maak hulle n dojo oop en dra die swalk tegniek oor aan die student wat dit nog swakker doen. Dieselfde met kompetisie...maar toe die WKF reëls geimplimenteer is het ek geweier om verder n skeidsregter of graderings beoordelaar te wees. Wat my onstel - foute wat ons oor gestraf is is nou in orde. Indtussen het die Japanese dit so gedoen ......maar enige kompetisie 5 + 1 Japanees wat beoordeel. Die karate van vandag is swak en alles word karate genoem - as daar n skop gebruik word is dit muay thai of karate. Groete aan die mooi land vane van Holland en Vlaandere. Suid Afrika.

Is that Shirai Sensei performing Goju Ryu's Seipai kata at 8min 11 sec? That got my attention. Was that typical for these types of seminars or just something he was doing personally? I love these old films. Thank you for sharing them.
That is Sensei Shirai. Looks like he was practicing on his own, I don't think he taught Goju Kata at these camps. They used to invite Goju and Shito masters to the camps and practiced their Katas though.

kata - the obsolete way of training, a misconception as their moves are against an enemy with weapon in hands not for punching/kick boxing fight. Nevertheless such way of training is better than nothing but iworse than anything which was created later in terms of fighting, so, it is no use practising it. It's like a prayer, now.

沖縄から本土に空手が渡ってきたとき何故か船越義珍は型中心の稽古を行っていくという方針にしたんだよな。当時の沖縄では素手で乱取り稽古しまくってたのにおそらく空手の技術が完全に本土に渡るのを恐れたんじゃないのかな。

巻き藁突きの映像、皆やせっぽっちで突きのフォームもド素人か？ってくらい酷い。栄養状態が悪いのかもしれないが普段からちゃんと鍛錬してれば多少なりとも筋肉が付くはず。素人を集めてそれっぽく撮ったフェイク動画か？

非常に興味深いです。 蹴りの練習で足をゆっくりあげて止める動作。 中国拳法では独脚といいますが、昔の練習方法にはこれが残っていたのでしょうか。 もはや中国拳法にすらあまり残っていない鍛錬方法なのですが。

懐かしい映像、早稲田は松濤館流でしたが練習は厳しかったです。体育館横の同じような巻き藁を突いていました。
What kata are they performing?
kata created especially for the fukugo speciality (ITKF)
中足で蹴る廻し蹴りをやっているシーンがあるが、今の空手でやってる回し蹴りはムエタイの影響で足の甲とか脛で蹴る方式になった。元来の空手には中足で蹴る回し蹴りさえあったのか疑問。回し蹴りは元の空手にはなかったのではないかと思う。
廻し蹴りは型にもありませんよね。中足で蹴る廻し蹴りは富名腰義豪が前蹴りを変化させたところから誕生したとは言われていますが、個人的には中山正敏氏が中国の北部から持ち帰った技術が元だと考えています。
もう、だいぶやってないから忘れたけどクーシャンクー小やセイシャンに 入っているのは三日月蹴りだっけ？回し蹴りは、あれの変手とか聞いた記憶。 まぁ、説の一つかデマかもしれないけど

Decades ago, I heard that the Japanese acquired the round kick during the occupation of Korea. Recently, I’ve heard that Yoshitaka got the extra kicks not originally from his father, but from the French Savate.
They sure weren’t hitting the Makiwara very hard. In the SKA, we have a picture of Caylor Adkins at Waseda (late ‘50s or very early ‘60s) with his Makiwara broken and laying at his feet while the other Waseda Karateka are still hitting theirs.
Am I correct in seeing both Okazaki Teruyuki-sensei and Mikami Takayuki-sensei in the film?
I believe you are right about Mikami. This would’ve been before his triumph over Kanazawa in 59(?). I had the honor of attending a weekend seminar with both Karateka in the middle 80’s. Both were their 50’s at the time and both had the physiques of a 25 year old. Tradition Shotokan training .
