I really don't know why Dave Hurwitz gets so excited by this performance. The first movement is a snooze-fest. The rest of it is decent enough but not a patch on Previn. Mr Hurwitz is entitled to his opinion that Previn is overrated but it is only his opinion and no more or less valid than the opinions of the British critics he sneers at. I have owned the Previn recording on vinyl and CD since the day it was issued over 50 years ago and in that time no other conductor has produced a performance which I consider superior. Just my opinion but every bit as valid as Dave Hurwitz's.

The missing timp rolls finally stamp FAIL on this. It is, in any case, far too meandering and lazy with a not very good LPO and oddly vague EMI recording. From the same era Previn/LSO is far better in every way, with a clear recording and avoiding Hollywood. The late YT was masterly live in Rach 2 but recording day with the LPO was just an off day. It is also worth chasing Svetlanov with the Moscow orchestra for those great Russian woodwinds and brass some of us are old enough to have heard when such as the Leningrad PO toured western Europe in the 1970s.

Yes, a very fine rendition, with the plus of it being available on a *_single_* CD; but a minus of the disc not being readily available (i.e. hard to find).

At the very end of the Symphony the timpanist is playing notes with the Brass which was not written in the original part but nonetheless sounds very effective just before the climactic roll

Shostakovich was indeed a genius. The mark he made despite the looming giants of music that came before him, is absolutely incredible. I am glad that you enjoyed this recording of the 10th Symphony. Eugene Ormandy seldom gets credit for his wonderful Shostakovich recordings. Do listen to the 13th Symphony by Bernard Haitink, which you will find on this channel. Thank you for listening 🎶

Babi Yar is a ravine in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. On 29 and 30 September 1941, the Nazis and their Ukrainian collaborators murdered approximately 33,771 Jewish civilians at Babi Yar. Dmitri Shostakovich completed his 13th Symphony on 20th July 1962. Each movement of the symphony is a setting of a Yevgeny Yevtushenko poem. It is a tribute against anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union and to the victims of the Babi Yar massacre.

I sang in LSO chorus for this recording which was in mid 70’s . We had just previously done a live concert of the work with Jessye Norman and Margaret Price and I think James Levine conducting ..Norman was unforgettable - Faessbender is a fine singer but Norman and Mahler were at another level .
