    Thanks for this, I was hoping to find a set of drop-in springs for my junkyard GT40p heads, I scored a Comp Xtreme Energy XE274HR (.555/.565) for very cheap and from what I can tell these are going to work perfectly. Comp's own spec sheet advertises you to use either their "986-16" or "987-16" springs but specify the heads need to be machined to use them. I also thought it was weird that their "986-16" springs show to only handle .540 lift whereas the 987-16 handle .590. These Lunati's should do exactly what I need.

    • @nickgarrick9928

      Hi Jake I don’t see why not. It’s going to be the same valve and spring combo so should be fine. Your pushrods might need to be a different length depending on the rocker, lifter combo.

      @@nickgarrick9928 thanks for quick response, I’m trying to run a cam that goes up .565 lift so I’m worried that would be cutting it too close and pushing it with the springs that come in the kit. I have some gt40p heads as I was going for a budget build on my 302. only other route I’ve seen is getting new valves with taller height keeper grooves for the exhaust so that they all line up even, and machining the lower guides to a smaller diameter to fit dual springs. But at that point with all the machining I prob might as well get some aftermarket heads. Really just seeing if this was a option that would hold up, maybe could get away with diff length pushrods and just milling the bolt pads to fit 3/8 in studs

      Ya I have no idea why they are different heights, they should have made them the same. Yes your right after doing all the work, it’s probably worth it to get a set of aluminum heads. I sure thought of it. My next build I will. Probably AFR heads. Also running big lift check the piston clearance, it’s going to be close.

    I'm new to the whole science behind heads, I'm working on a 1984 f150 and I'm looking to convert to a hydraulic roller and get some junk yard heads. Looking to make a sold 350hp with it that's solid more so low end and mid range, don't need to go fast just cruise at 80 when I want to. Which kind of heads would I find more beneficial gt40p or gt40 heads? I'd take them into a machine shop and get them reconditioned with the block and use this spring kit

    • @nickgarrick9928
      @nickgarrick9928 Рік тому

      So you would like to find 1996 explorers heads the GT40s. They have a good spark plug angle. The GT40Ps are the same head but the angle of the spark plug is different so you may need special headers. So the plug isn’t to close the the header. I just heated my header up and indented it to clear the 1 spark plug that was a problem. You could definitely make a nice torque engine with them. That’s what I did with a Ford Motorsport A332 cam in a 351w. But if your going roller you will use a different cam probably.

      @@nickgarrick9928 everyone said convert it to hydraulic roller, they said it preforms better easy hp gain and it last longer. I intended to keep it a flat tappet with a mild cam to save cost. So you said a 96 explore gt40 head, if I kept stock rod piston specs would I be able to go up any in the rocker ratio to let it breath any or would you just recommend something like this spring kit and leave the rest as is? Sorry I have so many questions, most the time when I comment I don't tend to get any replys like this haha so I'm trying to learn all I can

    • @nickgarrick9928
      @nickgarrick9928 Рік тому

      @@williammontano7854 yes for the cost it will be to convert it for a low end midrange HP/TQ engine the gain will be minimal. If you were building a motor for a mustang that revs and makes power up high, for a on a track or 1/4 mile. It would be worth it. But for a truck your right to stick with the flat tappet. • @nickgarrick9928
      @nickgarrick9928 2 роки тому

      On the lunati site it says max lift you can run is .570. Your cam from what I can see is similar to one I run now with .512 lift so you should be good. But always Check the piston to valve clearance. And also check the springs for bind as well to be safe.

    • @nickgarrick9928
      @nickgarrick9928 2 роки тому

      Yes you can run flat tappet lifters. Just stay less than the max lift with your camshaft and check piston to valve clearance. I have my heads on my 1973 302 block now. Which is flat tappet and the 351w I will be putting them on later after I drill the holes out to 1/2 to mount them is flat tappet as well. When you install these heads before putting it back together check your pushrod length. Make sure they aren’t short or to long.
