Cold Weather Revs
The sub title tells it all. It was between -15 F & -20 F and the exhaust water vapor made snow flakes. Despite the cold, I got lots of smoke and quite a few flames from the tailpipe.

This is a segment of a custom revving video on DVD that I had done in 2000. In the full video, she revs for 30 minutes, at times really screaming the 302 (5.0 liter). Tons of pipe shots in the original and a segment where she opens the hood and revs it with the carburetor linkage. This video segment shows the views of a guy getting caught hiding in some woods to watch her revving. She has him c...

The eastern European girl sensually smokes, blowing her smoke at her webcam. She's watching a revving video of her revving an old Chrysler Cordoba. The 'Doba doesn't have any exhaust system on it except tor Y pipe that connects to exhaust manifold. A short exhaust like that allows the oil burning 360 in the 'Doba to backfire a lot.

    • @pipeluvr
      @pipeluvr Місяць тому

      It was a cluster f&ck. An elderly lady that my wife knew, through my mother in law owned the 1976 Cordoba. I was fixing things on it for the lady. It mostly needed detailing, oil change, transmission fluid change and a few other service related items. The muffler and tailpipe were rusted out and the muffler was split open. Her grand daughter had borrowed the car to cruise around with a couple of other girls. The 'Doba had gotten a little loud due to the rusted out muffler. At some point some boys talked the grand daughter into revving it up, turning the key off, then back on. Of course that made for big a backfire and muffler parts hit the ground. Now it was running with a straight pipe of sorts. The backfire blew the muffler open at the back and side seams. It shot the rear seam and tailpipe off the remnant of the muffler body. The over axle bend of the tailpipe fell down and was laying on the rear axle housing. Nothing was dragging the ground, thankfully. The boys talked her into driving around town as one witness put it, "Roaring like a log truck going downhill." It basically meant that she would wind it up in low and let off getting loud pipe rap and backfire sounds until a cop told her go home. When I started working on the car I stripped exhaust off up to the Y pipe. After doing all the engine service things, I saw the golden opportunity for a revving video. My wife and I went a few miles out of town and I recorded her doing the revving. We shot the video at dusk and the backfires made all kinds of flashes under the car. I got down and got some hot footage of the flames shooting out of the exhaust. It was recorded in 1992 on a Sony 8mm camcorder. We watched it on the camera a few times and a would watch it with camera hooked to a TV. The video was one my first times digitizing an analog video in 2000, making a .mpg file. Enter the cluster f&ck. A couple months after doing the video conversion to digital, I tried my first time at video editing. I trimmed the dead time at each end. After previewing the video in the editor software, I tried compressing video to reduce it's size. At that time big video files couldn't be posted to the internet or sent by email. One of the settings in the software had the choice to keep the original on the disk, or delete the original and replace it with the new edit. That was bad enough, but far more worse was that I somehow made the choice to only record the audio. It looked fine in preview in the editing software. After getting out of the edit software, I went to play the video to see how it looked. I couldn't find the .mpg video. All I could find was an .mp3 file. Napster was the hot thing at the time for trading videos and music over the internet and .mp3 was the sound format. Of course the video on the 8mm cassette had been overwritten ages before, so I was screwed. But I had a nice sound file.....

      @@pipeluvrShame about the video being lost, but it sounds like it would have been a sight seeing the original cohort going around town. Awesome quality sound for the time, I’m guessing you would have had the camera placed under the exhaust given the clarity of the noise? Did a lot of folks end up recording and sending things via Napster back then?

      I was caught in the act four times and the actual first time I got caught, I was given away by evidence. Just before I had done the revving with the '59 Bonneville in the back yard, I had revved the hell out of mom's '64 Mercury Park Lane in the driveway when no one was around. The down turned pipes blasted two big black spots onto the driveway. Not the carbon spots that were sometimes made on a cold start. These were blackened craters in the gravel under the pipes. There no denying that I had been revving it. After that if I left any black marks in an area family might see, I covered them up to get rid of the evidence. The first time caught in the act, I was sitting in a pullout on a usually deserted road revving the T'Bird and getting a lot of smoke. I had the electronic rev limiter on it and along with the smoke I was getting a lot of backfires with flames and black smoke. A pickup came by just as it went into a big string of flame & blacksmoke shooting backfires, really "light'n 'em up. The pickup turned around and came back to where I was. I said that I had put an electronic ignition box on 'Bird. I said that the rev limter was supposed to cycle fast enough to prevent a lot of backfires, but it didn't seem to be work that way on a '65 , Bird. The second time was when I was revving a dark Blue Galaxie hardtop that I never recorded, but I put pictures of it in a community post. I had bought if for parts and then found that it was easy to get running and was far too nice body and interior wise to part out, so I ended up selling it. It had smoking 360 with a 2bbl carburetor and straight pipes, no mufflers. There are three pictures of it with highly visible pipe under it. One picture doesn't really show pipes, but they are shorties with turn downs that were at the level of the middle of the doors. Full on floorboard shakers. I had the ignition points tweaked for it to not be able to reach full on max revs. It had a high speed miss that limited the rpm. If I floored it and then worked pedal up and down fast, it backfired like hell. Nice orange flames & black smoke out of the pipes. The shorties were awesome in the dark with the flames lighting up the smoke that was billowing out from under sides and back of the car. I was up in the woods at a small forest park doing flames and smoke from the straight pipes shown in pictures #1 and #3. A car pulled into the park up at the bathrooms and heard the revving and backfiring. They showed up to see if I was having trouble. I said that it had started running like shit and I had been revving it to clear it out. The third time is in a video from 7 years ago named backfires where I'm recording making flames shoot out of green Galaxie's pipes. I put the hood up and rotated the distributor to retard the timing and make better backfire flames. I was making the flames when a pickup came past from the passenger side that I didn't see. I was shooting good flames when it passed by. I grabbed the camera and tripod and got them in the back seat and left the hood up. The guy turned around and came back to see if I needed help. I said that It was running like total shit and showed him by revving some flames. I said that it was running pretty normal at low revs, but wouldn't rev very high before cutting out and backfiring. The fourth time is in the video named Smokewagon Clouds. I had just finished blowing the giant smoke plume shown at 45 seconds. Also, there was a big cloud of smoke hanging over the field where I was parked and revving from the earlier smoke blowing revs. A car stopped out on the road and asked if I was having trouble. I used the excuse that I thought I had a valve that had been sticking. I said that I hadn't had the wagon very long and it had never gotten any highway miles and I thought it had a lot of carbon and deposits in the engine and I was using automatic transmission fluid to try to clean off anything that might be making the valve stick. By sheer luck they never saw the camera out in the field.

      @@elderberriann2499 I didn't come up with the oil in the gas trick until the mid '90s. Prior to that, I depended on the oil use of the particular engine that I was revving. By the time that the Mercury was 6 years old, it had the common issue of bad valve seals in the Ford FE engines. The Mercury had a 390 that blew big blue smoke puffs when it started up. If it was let to idle for as little as 30 seconds, it blew puffs when it was accelerated like when leaving a stop sign. The longer the idle the more blue smoke. The valve seals made for good revving smoke too. The old lube oils were not near as good as today and the gasoline had lead and lots of other additives that contributed for deposits in the combustion chambers, on the valves, and in the case of engines that didn't get much rpm use even the exhaust manifolds. Putting pedal to the floor made for big gray / black blasts from the exhaust pipes. The Mercury left big clouds and smoke trails when it hit "passing gear". Passing gear was just a downshift from 3rd gear to second, or if going slow enough all the way back to low gear. The valve seal thing on the FE engines was common enough that my mom wasn't concerned about leaving smoke at stop signs or stop lights. By the time the Merc was 6 years old, the oil rings were plugging up too which made for oil consumption and smoke at high rpms. It had good compression, but smoked. The mufflers on the Mercury were at the back of the car, just ahead of the rear bumper. They didn't heat up much with driving in traffic or even highway driving in cold weather. In those days, the mufflers would rust up, start leaking and need replacing every couple of years. Whenever the mufflers were leaking a lot, the 390's pipe raps would come through nice and loud. I'd do all the loud, smoky revving I could until the mufflers got replaced. Revving hard with rusted out mufflers made for smoke coming out from the whole back of the car, even the rear fender wells. The third pair of mufflers were glasspacks. Theory was that the glasspacks wouldn't rust and have the bodies leak. That was a fact. The glasspacks that fit the Mercury were big long ones. They had a louder tone for the most part, but due to where they were, they didn't have any real pipe rap. They weren't all that loud either. Since the mufflers were easy to get at, I developed a way of quickly taking them off with just a 6 inch crescent wrench. I kept them with a slip fit on the pipes, so that all I had to do was un-clamp the rear holder bracket, twist and pull a muffler off the pipe. Now I had straight pipes! I made a couple of pipes that fit onto the rear pipes and clamped in the holder like the mufflers. With curved turn downs, they looked the same as the mufflers from the back. I could put the straight pipes on in a few a couple of minutes and cruise around rapping them and making big blue clouds. For major smoke, I did the trans fluid through carburetor and made huge white clouds. As for the '59 Bonneville, it went through oil as fast as it went through gas. Just after high school, I inherited it, burned out glasspacks and all. Cloud after cloud of blue smoke from rapping the pipes. Big long smoke screens by hitting passing gear on long straight stretches on the highways. One night with a bright moon, I laid down an epic smoke screen a 1/2 mile long. I went from 35 up to 85 standing on it and the thick smoke never let up. It was quite the sight to see the highway covered in smoke all the way back to where I first floored it. I also did trans fluid clouds with it too, Often with the rear of the car into the wind. The billowing white smoke would sweep back over the car and I'd end up inside a thick cloud of smoke revving to rapping the pipes and revving it to the max. The oil rings were probably plugged with deposits for it to have smoked so much. It had great compression without a lot of blow by. At higher rpms, it just plain pumped out smoke. It had cleaned up nicely as far as paint and interior. It was just loud as hell and a smoke factory. I still got good money when I sold it, since the oil burning was that needed to be changed. After I sold it, it was about 70 miles away. There were reports that buyer's wife didn't mind getting loud and blowing off some smoke.

      @@pipeluvr Sounds like both cars were absolutely solid for making smoke. I never really realised how common that would have been at the time with the oil or general wear and tear from use. I’ve read stories over the years where folks would have been sitting at a stop sign with the car loading up and flooding itself due to a poorly tuned engine requiring a restart and rev to clear it out. Or even trying to coax along leaving a ‘rooster tail’ of smoke behind as the cars hesitate and misfire along the way. Sounds like for either car you had a show guaranteed! Also good to hear that the person you passed the 59 onto got use out of it as well! Did either of these cars ever make a scene when starting up during winter or after being hard to get going? Can imagine that would have caused quite the show!

      I had oil in the gas at 1quart to 4 gallons which is 16 to 1. 16 to 1 is the oil rich mix that the old 2 stroke engines such chain saws used. Plus, I had a Holley 4bbl carburetor on it with a high capacity accelerator pump. Rapidly working the gas pedal would pump a lot of fuel into the intake manifold and it would make black smoke and act like it was flooded. The big belch of gray smoke when I floored it was from the oil in the gas that hadn't gone into the combustion chambers until the rev up pulled it in.
