how to make a quarter midget timing key for go kart racing and karting
Your quarter midget ut3 timing is to be 20.5 but the engine comes advertised at 25 but in reality it is really 23 degrees so this is how you get it exactly 20.5.
You take the stock key to your Bridgeport and with an endmill you start cutting until you get it to the right depth. Make sure to install and check the timing with a degree wheel, pointer and timing light. 20.5 is the max. Now figure out what rpm the drill should be running at. The timing is much different at 1200 rpm vs 2000 rpm. Try to figure out the riddle in the rulebook.

This is spark timing not to be confused with camshaft timing. They have nothing to do with each other!

Is cam calibration going on? Absolutely! The closest you can be to .006 @51, the faster you will be.     For you new to 206 racing viewers - Please do not waste time and effort here. It is an exaggeration and misleading information to sell a product you do NOT NEED. Focus on consistent maintenance for both engine and chassis. Set up of your chassis and driving technique is where the speed is in this class. LOW cost High Value. Two degrees is the edges of this far <-> This is NOT where you are losing speed. I find it interesting he has a new video that shows more detail and comments are turned off. It proves the point of the futility of the effort, it puts unnecessary stress on the cam and lifter. Save your money for tires!

    Spring pressure on the intake valve is increased when using the seal. Kind of like a shim, more possible RPM before valve float when using the seal.

    There is one interesting thing in this video: the way he moves the nuts. If you look at others, they completely loosen the large nut and when you tighten it, they move the adjustment. This person does it well. Another issue is the gap.

    While you are allowed to be as much as 2 degrees off "without issue". The allowance of 2 degrees at a single point is to allow for a piece of dirt or grit that may be on the lobe that messes up the lift measurement (although from a tech perspective I don't think this is necessary). That is at one point (ie one check point :EX .050), not at each check point. Based on my experience, these cams are pretty consistent all the ay through the profile; If I am in the center at .020, I am usually dead center at .050, .100, .150 etc...). If I push that limit on the .020 on the intake for example, I will have problems meeting most if not all the of the other measurement points on the intake lobe. Therefore I think your claim of "8 degrees" of play is bit of hyperbole to make your point. Furthermore, we also know there is only one direction you want to move the cam, so really we're talking about two degrees to work with. That said, that is enough to move the centerline of the cam and get a little more favorable centerline.

    For all the talk of this going on, I’ve yet to see any empirical data on performance improvement. With such a low output engine, I’m curious to see what if any difference it makes. Unless something changed under Dan’s leadership, it’s highly unlikely Briggs are protecting engine builders. That would be a first.

    I was somewhat rookie in light A with a deco alcohol engine. Aways was told by different builders they learned a bit about flow from that motor. It had really good flow and a hot spark for the methanol.

    I thought factory spec on these was .006" intake and.008" exhaust? Also, I have always known valve lash/ clearance to shrink under heat cycles, not grow. Am I wrong on both points?

      Mechanically? Sure. But not within the rules of the class if you plan racing. The ignition timing is specified in the rule book.

    Fun fact: the flywheel key is strictly for timing. It has absolutely nothing to do with holding wheel to shaft. To prove this is indeed a fact, competent engine builders never use a key. They simply use the in the hole method or use a degree wheel to set timing. Another fun fact: you should never install a wheel without LAPPING it in first ALWAYS. Regardless if it had been lapped before. If you remove it, lap it to install it. Period.
