The Marionettes Chorale

Founded in 1963 and incorporated as a non-profit organisation in 2005, the Marionettes is one of the Caribbean's most celebrated choirs and performing arts organisations, both at home and abroad. In 1995, the Youth Chorale was formed for singers aged 11-26, and in 2012 the group began welcoming youngsters eight years and up. Led by Artistic & Musical Director Gretta Taylor, and artistic, musical, and administrative committees headed by Production Managers Joanne Mendes and Jacqueline Smith and Assistant Artistic Director Caroline Taylor - along with a collective of musicians (Caryll Warner, Khadija Huggins, and Joshua Joseph) coordinated by Dr Roger Henry - the choirs mount at least two major series a year, showcasing a repertoire ranging from western classical (European Renaissance through postmodern pieces), to spirituals, gospel, Caribbean folk and calypso, and full-length operas and musical theatre productions.

For 61 years and counting, faithful patrons have proclaimed: “Christmas begins with the Marionettes”! It's become a cherished, multi-generational Christmas tradition in Trinidad, and our adult and youth choirs returned to Queen’s Hall's Winifred Atwell Auditorium the first weekend of December to ring in the festive season with our annual Christmas concert! The series (including our special weekend matinée performance for care homes around the country) is proudly supported by Flow (Columbus Communications), Guardian Media Ltd, SCRIP-J, Music Radio 97.1FM, the Central Bank, and bpTT. The production was filmed live at Queen’s Hall by Heaven Sent Productions.

I’m watching this from Philadelphia, I’ve watched it several times since it was posted here. When I lived in my beloved homeland of Trinidad and Tobago, I never once missed a Marionette’s concert. Listening to Hermina Charles sing is a great delight. Marionette’s never disappoint, keeps me sane in this freezing cold! ❤

You're so right... It's part of what made us post that clip, and link to her full interview on Desmond. Her insights about him and our indigenous music are invaluable, and such a meaningful part of her legacy. We're losing far too many of our cultural stalwarts, and so often far too young.
