    Thanks! I would have been more fully informed if you had panned the camera to each part of the mechanism as you described it. I got lost when you showed the shaft that goes across to ..or from the bell crank. Maybe when you do sea trials you can do thay. Nice construction..!!

      You should watch the videos about the new wind vane because I have changed the way the vane controls the trim tab. It will be a while yet before I get to sea again. I do not as yet have any videos of the new vane in action.

    Thanks. By the way i recently got a 110 b inverter welder for light electrodes.. max 5/32 "... it only weighs about 5 lb with short lead I have ss rods and it works really well . Im quite sure your generator would power

    I very much appreciate this information on your trim tab aux rudder in operation on a beam reach. It will help me alot. I'm looking forward to an upcoming video showing it in use when off the wind. I'm taking to heart your comments on how to sail a long keel, shallow draft vessel.

    Hi, interesting video's. I'm not a sailor but just someone who is interested in ocean sailing. Seen een lot of video's on the subject. What I learn from yours is that you don't need a shining super yacht to sail the oceans. Not even necessary to "trim" the sails to get somewhere 😏. Sty save!

      Thanks for watching. It's great to have all the bells and whistles...if you can afford them AND if you can maintain them at sea. For many that is the hard part. For sure it is not necessary to sail with a sheet in one hand and the other on a winch handle all the time.

      @@SailingOTR Hi, thanks for your response on my comments and answering my questions. It was Albert Einstein who said: "keep things as simple as possible, but not simpler." The brilliance is of course in the last part of it. I wonder how many ocean sailors still master the basic navigation techniques when all electronics break down. Navigation with only sea charts, the sun, the stars, a sextant and an accurate time. Not many of them i guess. I subscribed and will see more of your video's.

      @@johanwithag2432 Lot to be said for the K.I.S.S. principle. My first open ocean crossing was done with sextant. GPS was still a dream and SatNav was in its infancy and very expensive. I recommend John Letcher's book Self Contained Celestial Navigation using H.O. 208

      @@SailingOTR Hi, thanks for pointing me to this book. I found a view pdf pages of it, but it is still under copy write I think. Heavy stuff to learn that's for sure. The book is still on Amazon for 330 euro! used. Celestial Navigation seems to be still heavily in use with the NASA for their space traveling.

    Do you suspect it would be ineffective trying to put a windvane on a 19' trailer sailer sailboat such as the West Wight Potter 19? Appreciate your candor. Thank you!

      Great question. I think it's a good idea. Smaller lighter boats will teach you a great deal about your boat and your self-steering system.

    I'm a bit confused by this latest design. When the boat is on a beam reach, it would appear that the axis of the windvane blade shaft will not be inclined (20 degrees) from the horizontal? Or what am I missing here?

      Thanks for watching and commenting. That is true. As the blade is turned towards the "close hauled" position the amount of inclination decreases. The purpose of inclining the axis is to provide a small amount of negative feedback in the system. I do not know exactly how much this amount of negative feed back affects course stability. It would take two boats exactly the same, sailing side by side, to see how much difference the negative feedback makes. I do know that many horizontal blade wind vanes without an inclined axis work just fine. And I suspect that for many small boats course stability is not going to be all that good anyway.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. There is no "bearing" in the sense that you mean. The blade shaft fits through a 1/2" hole drilled through the 1 1/2" PVC pipe. The PVC pipe is the bearing surface. That is why you need a non-corrosive shaft. The PVC pipe is quite "slippery" and the wind vane blade swings quite easily.

    My apology for asking a lot of questions. I have a transom-hung rudder and hope to adapt your design to use a trim-tab on that, instead of an auxiliary rudder. The geometry is such that I will likely have to place the windvane off-center; it would need to be positioned 4-6" to starboard from the center line (it's a 7.5' beam, 19' LOA boat). Do you see any problem with this configuration?

    Thanks again for making these videos. Your ingenuity and pragmatism is quite remarkable! You mentioned that your windvane only operates through 180 degrees. Would you please explain why this is? Also, if I understood correctly you have this 180 degrees range set with the limit at ~45 degrees (ie. close hauled); does that then mean that you can steer no higher than 225 degrees (ie. broad reach) on the other side?

      Thanks for watching. That's 180 in either direction from the zero point which is dead aft. The vane can continue to turn BUT the lines from the wind vane to the trim tab would then twist around themselves. The friction would make it very difficult for the vane to work properly.

    Thanks for your videos. It's exciting to consider making such a wind vane! I understand the importance of balancing the sails, but can the wind vane compensate for a following sea on the quarter that pushes the stern around and tends to cause a round up?

      Thanks for watching. Self-steering systems are reactionary, whether autopilot or windvane are used. There are a lot of variables to take into consideration when answering this question. Generally speaking a self steering system will eventually correct the course in time. BUT if the appearant wind direction and speed are changing a lot it can be very difficult to steer a true course. You can test this yourself with your own boat. Disconnect any self steering system. Then see if you can maintain a true course by turning the main rudder no more than 5 degrees in either direction. That is about the equivalent amount of course correction your system will make. How did it go? That's your answer. With my boat's current set up I added about 1/2 square foot to the auxiliar rudder to improve performance under those circumstances. It has yet to be tesed IRL.

      Thanks for watching. I have not made any drawings of the windvane. The idea, concept and design are all in my head. That is what I usually do when making something. I thought the pictures were self eplainitory. As for my travels I can only say watch my videos. Although they are not all inclusive. I used to have a website featuring my different boats and my travels. But the hosting service got too greedy and I dropped the website. I have considered making new videos for YT from old videos and pictures. All of my early travels were before digital video cameras were available and as common as they are today. That may be sometime in the making as I have numerous other projects in the works right now.

      And I say why waste the money? The materials I used have already stood the test of time and distance after 10+ years and 30,000 miles. BTW and FYI Schd 40 PVC pipe and fittings are used in all manner of building and construction and it is very strong. Cut a two foot long piece of 2" Schd 40 PVC pipe. Support it at both ends then stand on it in the middle of the pipe...See what happens.

    Parts List and General Guidelines Materials can be anything that is suitable depending on what is available in your area. Rod: Any noncorrosive round bar of suitable length. 1/4"~1/2" diameter. Wind Vane Blade: Any material of suitable stiffness and light weight. I used "Door Skin" plywood 1/8" thick, made with three plys. Seal and finish to suit. Straps: Flat strap material to hold blade to rod without slipping. Cross Bar: This is used to transmit the rotation of the blade to the controlled surface. Can be any suitable material, wood or plastic. Length about 8" X Width 1 1/2" X 3/4" Thick. Control Lines: 3/16 ~ 1/4" line. Dacron or nylon. Course Setting Pipe and Support Bracket Pipe: Two different sizes of pipe of sufficient diameter for stiffness and general strength. I used 1 1/2" & 2" Schd 40 PVc pipe. Plus any necessary pipe fittings, i.e. Pipe Tees, etc. Hardware: One double or two single small blocks with mounting hardware to direct the control lines to the controlled surface. Various S.S. fasteners as needed to hold things together. General Guidelines The size of the auxiliary rudder should equal 40% ~ 60% of the main rudder. The trim tab used to turn the auxiliary rudder should be about 15% of the area of the auxiliary rudder if it is attached directly to the trailing edge of the auxiliary rudder. BUT it is much better to separate the trim tab from the auxiliary or main rudder. The trim tab can then have less surface area in relationship to the auxiliary rudder. The leading edge of my trim tab is 3" aft of the trailing edge of the auxiliary rudder. It has an area of about 8% of the auxiliary rudder. If you have a transom hung or outboard rudder this makes the whole build of the self steering system much easier as the trim tab can be attached to the main rudder.       I have built my own self-steering system on three different boats that I have owned. Combined milage is well over 80k nautcal miles. It isn't hard and it is far less expensive than those off the shelf SS deals.

    White PVC is not UV resistant. I've used it exposed, outside in Southern California for sprinklers and it's held up. It does get brittle. There is a UV resistant schedule #, not sure where to get it. Gray PVC for electrical conduit might be UV resistant, not sure.

      Yes, the gray PVC electrical conduit is rated for direct exposure to sunlight. I used it many times in electrical installations,

    Great series I have found the Book you mentioned with out giving an arm and a leg. I will be back to watch study and enjoy again. I was looking at making this for an Albin Vega. Thank you happy Holidays Mike

      Albin Vega. Great small boat. A seperate auxiliary rudder has advantages and disadvantages. If you make your own do try to make the rudder easily removabe. If it is fixed in position all the time the aux rudder decreases steering response of the main rudder. That makes manuvering the boat in tight places more difficult. There is also a good series about making you own pendulum servo with a horizontal axis wind vane on YT...somewhere.

      @@SailingOTR vega is hard to steer. Rudder is infront of the propeller.
