Hornpipes: Duke of Gloucester’s March & The Steam Boat
Переглядів 19421 годину тому
Two hornpipes played with my friend Mikey Kenney in the White Lion pub, Ferryside. Both tunes came from an original manuscript of tunes collected by James Reay of Berwick Hill in the 1790s. Mikey is tuned down to C# to accompany my c. 1760 Egan pipes.
Uilleann Pipes: Union Pipe Gavott
Переглядів 3355 місяців тому
Here’s a piece that has intrigued me for years. ‘Union Pipe Gavott’ from O'Farrell's Pocket Companion for the Irish or Union Pipes (1806). Not the kind of dance music you hear played on Irish pipes any more. I have changed the key from the tune as written. I’m playing it on my c. 1760 C# set made by Egan of Dublin and restored by Sam Lawrence (who also made the wonderful chanter to compete the ...
Uilleann Pipes - Chorus Jig
Переглядів 8955 місяців тому
I got the ’Chorus Jig’ from vol II of ‘A Selection of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs’ by James Aird (1782). I know of a 7-part version of the tune in the Goodman manuscripts and a 3-part version in O’Neill’s. Although (to my ear anyway) this much earlier 5-part version is by far the nicest. Just a perfect tune for pipes. Played here on the c. 1760 C# set made by Egan of Dublin and rest...

Uilleann Pipes: Ffarwel Dic Bibidd (minuet)
Переглядів 2218 місяців тому
A tune collected on the Isle of Anglesey in North West Wales and contained in a collection of tunes dated 1768. The tune is called ‘Ffarwel Dic Bibidd‘ or ‘Dic the Piper’s Farewell‘. I’ve taken a few liberties with the setting as written in the manuscript to make it ‘more pipey’. Played here on the c. 1760 set made by Egan of Dublin. So the pipes and the manuscript date to the same period. Love...
Uilleann Pipes: Éamonn Mhagáine and The Pantomime Jig
Переглядів 243Рік тому
A couple of tunes from the Goodman Collection. The first is an air entitled Éamonn Mhagáine. The second is a cute little jig I’ve always liked called The Pantomime Jig. Played on a set of pipes made by Egan of Dublin (c 1760) set in C#.

Jig: Lady Hynes on ‘John’ Egan Union pipes (c. 1760)
Переглядів 715Рік тому
One of my favourite jigs in the Goodman collection is this 4-parter named ‘Lady Hynes’. Played on a beautifully restored set of C# pipes made by ‘John’ Egan pipes in Dublin c. 1760. With a lovely new chanter by Sam Lawrence.

Piping with a Puppy! - Two Reels from the Goodman Collection

Practicing is always a challenge. Even more so with a curious puppy in the house! He just had to join in for the second tune. Two reels from the Goodman Collection. The Wet Weather/‘Roll Her on the Mountain’. Played on a c. 1810 C sharp set made by Malcolm MacGregor.

    WARNINGl: This was the very first time I ever, ever, ever-in-my-life, played the second melody. I crashed and burned a few times, so please don’t go copying this. I will record it again, properly. Until then, remember, you have been warned. If I hear anyone playing my mistakes, there’ll be wigs on the green 😱

    Lovely tune, Rick. I still remember the odd Tuesday night session in the back of The Ivy House and it's a shame life didn't allow me to get along there more often. I was always quite partial to your piping. The sparing use of the regulators in the repeat is a nice touch. That last part has a whiff of O'Carolan about it. I've written a jig today which I think would sound nice on pipes. Backed Into A Corner. Check it out at ua-cam.com/video/-mJUSnlPD-I/v-deo.html I'd be interested to hear what a fellow trad musician makes of it. Aidan Crossey

    • @ricklines4120
      @ricklines4120 2 роки тому

      The chanter is original as are the drones and mainstock. Sam’s reed in it. Sam made the two regs patterned externally on a MacGregor set in a museum collection.

      @@ricklines4120 that’s a very beautiful instrument, clearly priceless. I have never heard a MacGregor set but had heard his pipes were good in the past. How narrow is the throat? Sub-4mm? It’s reminiscent of old Kennas, Coynes, and similar

    • @ricklines4120
      @ricklines4120 2 роки тому

      @@patrickcannady2066 I don’t know of any other MacGregor sets being played. Some I know are in museums and a couple of sets in private hands although as far as I know neither of those is playing. It took me about 10 years to get the set fully restored. I remember Sam saying the throat was wider than he would have expected. As I remember it’s a touch over 5mm. The bell is 10.5mm. (Correction: Throat is 4.44mm)
