some brief info in 1927, an AM long-wave transmitter was established for the State Radio Broadcasting Company in the new Kalundborg Radiophonic Station on the Gisseløre isthmus near Kalundborg. The transmission frequency was 260 kHz with a nominal transmission power of 7.5 kW. The antenna consisted of two 105 m high three-legged steel masts connected by a single antenna wire, and was built by Nakskov Shipyard. In 1954, the masts were extended to 118 m and provided with 23 m wide cross booms that carried eight top wires for a so-called Alexanderson antenna. From 15 November 1982, the transmission power was increased to 300 kW and the frequency changed to 243 kHz. from June 16, 2011, with a power of 50 kW a Canadian-produced transmitter from Nautel. 31-12-2023 closed down forever thanks for video 🦊

I used to be creeped out by this when I was a schoolboy in England exploring the shortwave band in the 1970s. The tape containing the interval signal was clearly so stretched from overuse that it adds something uniquely eerie. Thank you.

It was in 1965 - during the cold war years. Australia had a Liberal Government and the Vietnam War was in full swing. I had just bought a new radio from the Adelaide electrical firm Ernsmiths, “The Good People to Deal With”. It was a powerful new model capable of picking up AM stations throughout Australia and it had several efficient short wave bands. My exploratory journeys twisting the knobs and dials on the new toy took me through many overseas broadcasts, in all sorts of languages, and came in on a very powerful “Voice of America” station. That’s where I first heard their daily news to the world broadcasts, much of which was about the Vietnam war. I soon found the old Soviet Union’s equivalent station, Radio Moscow News. In the years of the Cold War most news reports and commentaries focused on the relations between the United States and Soviet Union. America referred to the enemy as Communist Infiltrators while the Soviets described their enemy as the American Aggressors. In late 1965 the Soviet Union reaffirmed its readiness to provide the Democratic Republic of Vietnam with the necessary aid to repel US aggression in the future. But America and its allies, including Australia, continued their support for going “all the way with LBJ”, (US President, Lyndon Baines Johnson 1963-1969). And the war continued. A popular feature which began in 1957 on the Russian station was Moscow Mailbag, which answered listeners' questions in English about the Soviet Union. I decided to take up their invitation and write to Mailbag. I was working in the then Savings Bank of South Australia in 1965 and I sent a letter off asking how people in the Soviet Union used banks. A reply from Moscow arrived in my letter box about six weeks later. The words were neatly typed out on thin aerogram paper. It occurred to me that the content was produced by the official propaganda machine which seemed to be prevalent in all information covering things which were “hidden” behind the Iron Curtain in those days. The letter included statements about the efficiency of the peoples banking system and how the State owned institution helps people in their times of greatest need. In conclusion the letter said that it was planning a talk on their banking system on Mailbag and supplied details of dates and frequencies on which it could be heard. At one of the designated times, about three weeks later, I tuned in to Mailbag, and heard the familiar signature tune to the program. To my surprise I was the first name to be mentioned with a question on that segment. After a short introduction of my name, suburb and State in which I lived in Australia they began to answer my question about banks. To my surprise, for the second time, their “talk” was word for word with the letter they had sent to me. One of Moscow’s programs beamed mainly to Australia and New Zealand, included a half hour segment of classical music performed by Russian musicians and orchestras of highest regard in the Soviet Union. One night they played a movement from Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony. It was an absolute masterpiece. I took note of the record details - as much as I could - during the back announcement. I had to have that recording. I already had the music on a WRC recording by a European Orchestra but it fell far short of the superiority of the Russian version. My hunt for the record began. No record shop in Adelaide knew what I was talking about - none had ever heard of the orchestra name I had written on a piece of cardboard. Some had a version of Tchaikovsky’s 5th but not the one I wanted. None had stocks of any recordings with covers written exclusively in Russian language. Then, a breakthrough. I was telling a senior work colleague about my unsuccessful search. He looked around the office and leant over towards me. In a subdued tone, he told me there was a Communist bookshop in Hindley Street Adelaide. He said it might be worth a try, and told me his mother knew about the Globus Book Shop, which, she believed, was run by volunteer members or friends of the Communist Party of Australia. I went to the Globus Book Shop to find there were quite a few Russian LPs but not the one I wanted. A very helpful middle age lady wearing a red hat looked up details of the record in a book from under the counter. Although I did not have the catalogue number of the record she was sure the one in the book matched the details I had given her. She offered to order it in for me, said it would take 6 to 8 weeks. I left my name but she did not ask for my address or a phone contact number. Later on a cold July day I returned to the Globus to enquire about the record. There were two ladies in the shop that day, but not the lady in the red hat who had ordered the record for me. One of the ladies had a grey hat and the younger woman was not wearing a hat. The lady with no hat went to a cupboard and got my LP. We talked about it briefly - I remember her saying that all the records that came to Australia were of the top quality performances. She put the record in its cover and placed it between two pieces of stiff cardboard and sticky taped them together, and then put it in a plain brown paper bag. While paying, I forget the price but it was surprisingly inexpensive, the lady in the grey hat was smiling and the lady without a hat, the one who was serving me, was also smiling. They both looked out through the front door of the shop and then smiled at each other and they smiled at me. I glanced towards the door and saw a man in a grey overcoat smiling and he gave a little wave as he walked slowly by. He appeared to be eating a pasty or something out of a paper bag. The older lady in the grey hat said to me “don’t worry dear”. She explained that he’s just our ASIO man. He drops in sometimes just to say hello and have a little chat and a cup of tea. We all know it’s just a silly game. I went home and played my new record, a beautifully made slightly thicker than usual vinyl disc that sat completely flat on the turntable, A brilliant recording with subtle stereo quality. Sadly, I haven’t got the record now. Sadly, I no longer have the exchange of letters that started all this off 53 years ago. My name would probably have been noted in ASIO records somewhere - they were paranoid about “Commies under the beds” in those days. But I rather liked the friendly ladies in the Hindley Street shop. They, like me, were quite amused at the perceived thought of them being a threat to the security of the nation. end
