Nature Journal Tour! (part 2)
The long awaited part 2. Finally here for your enjoyment. Sit back and enjoy a sketchbook tour style video from artist and naturalist Laurel Sundberg.
I started this video back in May and was about 80% done…before I got sick, and then got really sick, and then couldn’t recover. Just getting through my day was all I could handle.
But I am now recovering. And so after a long gap, many trials and tribulations, here is the rest of my nature journal!

Nature Journal Tour! (part 1)

Come along with me as I share one of my recent sketchbooks/nature journal! As an artist, sketches are very important to the creative process. As a naturalist noting observations of nature keep me in touch with what is going on throughout the year. A nature journal is the perfect bridge between these two areas for me. This sketchbook is one that I used for about a year to record all sorts of not...
2023 Phenology Wheel - time lapse
Переглядів 1599 місяців тому
Just a short clip of the finishing touches on a phenology wheel I made from my 2023 observations. A phenology wheel is a way of recording seasonal changes. This was my first time making one. I used notes from my nature journal and made one small painting per month. The results are personal to your interests and your area. I’ve started one for 2024. So interesting to see the differences between ...
Draw From Nature - Nature Journal Bubble (cartoon) Sketch
Переглядів 50Рік тому
I like to make notes in the great outdoors, bring them back to my studio and create a fun sketch to paste into my nature journal. In this case I create a "bubble" sketch, basically a cartoon style sketch, using pencil, watercolor wash, and ink.
April Nature Journal - Sketch-along
Переглядів 125Рік тому
April may be long gone, but the notes in my nature journal take me right back to my observations from this spring! This "enhanced" memory is one of the main reason I like to journal. In this video I explain how I like to finish my field notes and add a watercolor sketch, and show how I like to make my notes more permanent with ink. After delays from work and technical issues, this long delayed ...
Watercolor Timelapse: Ruby-crowned kinglet

Timelapse nature journal entry of Ruby-crowned kinglet, one of our migratory songbirds. Curious about migratory birds, warblers, or sketching in watercolor? Follow along as I create a sketch of a Ruby-crowned kinglet in my homemade nature journal. As the weather warms up for spring the types of birds I see and hear changes rapidly. I like to make field notes and then create sketches of a few of...

Thank you! 😊
So fun to watch!

Beautiful!
@@InfiniteText thank you!
Well, well, well. Look who showed up in my shorts this morning. Wait…that could be misinterpreted.
😆👍 Well hello there UA-cam neighbor👋.
I love this idea! 💜
Beautiful & intriguing! TFS
I enjoyed this video very much and am excited for part 2.
this was lovely to watch
This is wonderful, thanks for sharing! Love your art and how passionate you are about the world around us!
oh my goodness ?!?!? Your art is amazing and I genuinely adore the use of your colours <33 there is something about the way you've created this sketchbook that really has such a strong personality with it? Like, it's so distinctive ?? anyway, thank you for sharing because im dying this is so good
really nice. looking forward to part 2 N ice day in southern Oregon too, Thanks
This is great. I like your straight-forward presentation and artistic style. I'm also a big fan of the ruby-crowned kinglet. I love when they get their red up!
Thank you! Glad you like it. I've been enjoying seeing the kinglets this spring. :)
Fascinating!
Saw some doing the wing-wiggle today!
Do you still like them a year later? I think James Gurney uses them .
I DO still really like them! I particularly like that the pack comes with a 12 and 8 round, which I use all the time. It's nice to have a travel set with full size brushes because I'm not painting miniatures. the smallest I paint plain air is 6x9", so it's very nice to be able to wet into wet and fill in quickly.

Oh... now I see why UA-cam hasn't picked up her channel. The algorithm doesn't know what category to put the channel in because it's both painting and bee's instead of dedicated to one topic. And it's probably never seen that crossover before.
I don't understand how she has only a 100 something subs. She's so pretty and her skills are crazy good.
Oil color takes a very long time to dry. I didn’t know it would take that long before I did my first painting. I used medium that made it take longer
Right!? It’s taken months to dry paintings of snow/winter scenes. So much white! I have artist friends who use Liquin to speed dry time, but that medium gives me an instant headache. The water-I’m able oils I use now do have a medium that speeds dry time, but I’m not very experienced with it.
Thanks for sharing. I'm new to acrylics and blending is a pain. Especially if you attempt anything close to realism. I think I will change my approach to something like Studio Ghibli style of animation. Japanese animation with their more flat realism is perhaps a better fit for acrylic.
Acrylics are a big change from any other medium. Probably a great reason to explore a new style of painting!
Loved the video. It was short and straight to the point. A few questions! How much honey does one get from the hive in a year? Is it enough to sustain a family?
Potentially, one hive can be enough to supply a family. I think two colonies might be ideal. You can rotate first and second year, and have one that should be harvest-able while the other builds up. Harvesting honey (in a cold climate) generally is a second year hive. First year to build up, second year to put up a lot of honey - with extra for you to harvest. For me, a good season nets me about 100lbs of honey from a strong colony (2 shallow "honey" supers). I'm very conservative with harvesting though. For my small family that's plenty, but we also combine with maple syrup/sugaring for our sugar. It varies widely depending on climate, the weather/bloom success of your nectar sources, and the strength of you colony. For example I've harvested zero honey this year. We've had extreme drought conditions in south/central MN. It's a new colony, and needs all its food for winter survival.
Great Video
Wah beatifull my frends🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
thank you Laurel! I would be happy to use links if you have them to purchase your favorite brushes!
Petit bonjour à déplier en coin d’un sourire enjoué….Tombé par hasard sur votre chaîne, vous me rappelez la mère de mes enfants que j’ai perdue. Prenez soin de vous. Philippe.
As of today here in fw TX insects are almost non existent. Sky spraying going day and night
It’s very frightening how rapidly our invertebrates are declining. Honeybees, as a “livestock” insect will ultimately be ok, but all the native bees and allies are in trouble.
Stop geoingeneering and 5G
I have a brush cleaner by Chroma called Incredible Brush Cleaner, its amazing for oils or acrylics. with oils can be water mixable or traditional oils, and Winsor & Newton have brushes made for their water mixable oils.
Wow. You sure brought that to life nicely. Good work!
Thank you! A little watercolor can really bring things to life. :)
Thanks for the overview. I just bought some Daler-Rowney Georgian water-mixable oils and tried them out for the first time recently. They work great, very smooth and buttery-good for blending. There is no color-shift and the painting was touch-dry in a few days. Vey low odour too!
That’s great! I’ve had good luck with Daler-Rodney.
Daler-ROWNEY…haha. Autocorrect…
Love your ruby-crowned kinglet! Thanks for your review, too.
i have one now in autin, ,,he eats the peanut butter and suete,,,,
Laurel the painting is fantastic! Thanks for making this video. It is so fun to see how it was created.
I'm so glad you're enjoying it and the "making-of" video!
have you ever used brush conditioning soap? I love it and how it keeps the original brush shape or point. i have brushes over 10 years old where the wood wears down and bristles are still as good as a new brush.
I only use synthetic and sable brushes for oils...i can't use hog bristles because Imma muslim... How do I keep my brushes last longer?
If possible, clean them after each use, and try to keep paint from building up at the ferrule- the part where the bristles connect with the metal portion of the brush. If I can't clean right away I will wipe down my brushes and put them in my brush roll (protection) and put them in my freezer. Once I'm ready to clean them I use Master's brush soap. Ivory (bar) soap works well too. Then lay flat to dry. This will keep the glue holding the ferrule on the shaft in good shape. Hope this helps!
@@laurelsundbergstudio thankyou sister Laurel, I will try to clean them. Yesterday I use a dish soap and warm water to clean them, mainly because I wanted to save money but it didnt work out and damages the hair. But I tried using gum arabic later and it helps in getting the dirt off and shaping it. Today i might buy a bottle of daler rowney brush cleaner
@@abdulmuizchulan214 I should specify; when working with traditional oil paints, I use Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits to clean residual paint off first, then go ahead with a soap to finish cleaning. When working in Water-mixable oils, you can go straight to a brush soap of your choice.
@@laurelsundbergstudio hi there...i have just tested n tried brushing the brush toxuc free. I use a metal brushwasher filled with 3 parts safflower oil (recommended) 1 part of purified linseed (optional) and half part of spike oil. Rinse them thoroughly and i use the daler rowney brush liquid soap....it works alhamdulillah....i like it that my bruahes are soft after the wash...i recommend u try it, you"ll love it
I'm thinking about just getting the three rounds. St Louis Art Supply has the set for $34. Do you think I really need the flats and liner brush. BTW I'm a newbie watercolorist.
The three rounds would be a great place to start. The 12, 8, and 4 are a great size range. You could get a lot of mileage out of them, see if you enjoy them, and expand later if you want. My kit only had a medium and small round, and an occasional mop brush in the studio. It worked just fine as a beginner. (But I’ll be honest, I do REALLY enjoy having all the sizes I could possibly need in the field at this point.) Good luck! Hope you like them if you give them a try.
This is a great review, I love how in-depth you go! Haven't used oils in years for the whole drying-too-slowly reason, so I recently bought some open acrylics, too, and have been enjoying them a lot. Blending is so much easier than with regular acrylics, and like you said, they're easier to photograph and even scan when necessary. Interesting that you mention humidity and temperature, too! It's really hot and humid where I am right now, and drying times have increased across the board...
Love finding a bird nerd that paints I would love to hear about your casein adventures as well Thanks for the videos
This made me happy. I just picked up a Princeton Aspen Flat 6 but haven't tried it out yet. I have some Rosemary Ivory and Ultimates being mailed in but it would sure be nice to have a decent brush available at the local stores which the Aspens are.
I hope you like the Aspens! Mine have held up well and I'm still really enjoying painting with them.
The music takes away too much of your space. I want to hear you not your music. Lower the volume way low. I wanted to hear what you had to say.
Great review on golden open acrylic especially for tropical countries where the weather is hot. I tried different methods like using ice bottom of glass palette and wet plastic sheets nothing seems to help. s working l hope open acrylic will help. Nothing is free l hope the company should look into your free advertisement
Thank you for this review! It’s one of the best reviews I’ve seen. No fluff, just honest real life experience that is so helpful! Not helpful however for my art supply addiction lol! 🤣
super....
Thank you! The hangers are nice that they're built in, but not user-friendly.
Congrats on your show! Looks great! Though I do hate those hangers some places use. Your pastels are outstanding! Brava!
Great point on artists quality oil paints going much further. I get annoyed when I see tutors recommending beginners use cheap paints. In my opinion you need to be pretty experienced to use cheap paints successfully, especially the really cheap paints. Thank you for this info. I use oil and acrylic and have been considering giving water mixable oils a try. My late mother used to use them as the fumes from traditional oils made her ill. I don’t have that problem (yet) but feel I should get used to these paints in case I ever do.
Excellent review and your art is beautiful! I'm using Cobra Water Mixable oils and have a painting that is two weeks old. It is still tacky. I found if you mix in too much water, the oils will never dry. Just a little bit of water, to make the paint flow, is better. Thin strokes are also important. One art website suggests placing your painting next to a slow running fan, that will speed up the drying time. One artist exposes his fresh paintings to sunlight for a day and it speeds the drying time as well. I am testing the Cobra Quick Drying Medium, instead of water, to see if it helps with the drying time. I want to test the Golden Open acrylics and your video was very helpful. Thank you!
Thank you Steve! I totally agree with you about the not using too much water and thin layers helping the dry time, and aiding it with a fan and/or sunlight. In this painting's case, I was really pushing the impasto layers in the white, and boy did it show with the super-long dry time, lol! I usually find things dry MUCH faster during the summer months. I'm curious what you think of the Cobra medium. I have the Winsor Newton and find it too tacky, just don't like the consistency.
I saved a ruby-crowned kinglet from the cold and named him Solider! I love them now so here’s a question; Can you have these birds as pets? 🦜
Nice save, and great question! Unfortunately no, they can't be kept as pets. In the US all migratory birds including kinglets are prohibited from being taken from the wild. (This is to prevent kill, trade, capture, or sale.) If the bird has recovered, the best bet is to offer some food (mealworms perhaps, they are insect eaters) and then pick a release location that offers some good habitat - food/water/shelter. If the bird hasn't recovered it's time to seek a wildlife rehab center. These birds are tougher than they look, and can readily handle snowstorms if they have enough food. Good luck with Soldier! I look forward to seeing his/her buddies soon this spring!
Thank you. You well explain what I was looking on a water oil mixable brushes. I starting to use water oil mixable and was wondering what kind of brushes and you just made it real. Thanks for your video and hoping to see more of your work and tutorials.
Thank you! Glad it was helpful! I really like water mixable oils, but the brushes make a big difference. Once I got brushes figured out they felt more like traditional oils.
These are the cutest <3 saw one for the first time recently!
