Surely with thermal imaging devices now so common, there’s nighttime sightings that are recorded?

Back in 1983 North east Victoria in a cleared pine forest l got a really really good look at a panther as it stood still in stride crossing the road until it realised l had seen it and jumped up the 5m embankment in a single bound my dog tried to run after it but fell back down the steep embankment. Description was like so many others body size and shape a cross between Doberman and Labrador with long neck and rather small head and jet black with the tail as long as the body. I've since seen pet leopards in England that are exactly the same as the panther l saw. Maybe hundreds of years of taking panthers from India and bringing their pets to Australia hundreds of years ago. When I lived in North East Victoria for four years I would be in the bush most nights after work hunting or fishing. I only saw one panther for a few seconds. Your not going to find them

You want to check leopard scat. Go to a private zoo that has a leopard and ask for scat. Then get that tested.

I have seen this panther in bush in monbulk but the sounds you have recorded is actually a fox. I lived in my car in bush parks for 6 years and saw and experienced some pretty out there shit trust me !!! The noise you recorded was a relatively common thing I heard late at night in the Yarra ranges and one day that sound was right next to my car really close and a few minutes later I saw a really big fox standing nearby. This sound is very distinct rather like the walling woman of folk law legends. There is weird shit in the Australian bush full stop. So always careful camping no matter what and it’s only a matter of time before this enduring legends of big cats move from myth to reality. Perhaps those with the evidence prefer to keep it hidden for fear of it being hunted down for sport ?

I live in the rainforest of far north Queensland. I have never seen a big cat. Though I did see something recently that looked just like a hyena. It was pure black. Anyone seen anything like that?

I believe the sound of our myth yaowie is the scream calls of these cats. Pumas ,cougars have the same sound call . And they in SA. Seen picks of prints in the dirt after a chicken coop cleaned out. I believe mated with native feral cats. To still be alive today.

I have witnessed this elusive creature in the early 1980s in the Yarra ranges of Victoria. I am not alone either as I have personally spoken to other witnesses in the area. It has appeared in the local papers a number of times, from reputable people who have forward about their sightings. I have spoken to farmers who had their sheep regularly killed by something ? These animals only had their guts eaten and nothing more ? Are they dangerous ? I don’t think they are a danger as they have a vast supply of food in the form of kangaroo, sheep, goats, deers, bird’s and even large fish from the small creeks that are everywhere in the bush. They will run away from human’s generally but young children unsupervised may be at risk of attack but this would be the exception and never the norm.

Back in the mid 90's, i was with a friend on a day trip to Sofala, as we were finally leaving that quaint little town, we drove around a bit, past the town to visit the river, we saw a black cat by the side of the road- but it didnt look well at all...as we got closer, i realised it was in very poor condition, and in fact it collapsed on the ground. I love animals and am very experienced and knowledgeable- my parents used to breed Manx cats, plus we had the farm cats. Anyway we stopped the car and i picked up the poor sick cat, i wrapped it up to make it comfy, we looked for a vet, but no vets to be found, so as we'd had our fun, i wanted to head home- my vets were very good and dedicated- and i knew they'd do their best for the poor sick cat. Long story short, despite the best efforts of the vet, the poor cat died, but one thing always stuck with me- it was a funny looking cat- and the vet said it was an anomaly, as it had the teeth of a kitten- but it was huge! I always wish they'd done a DNA test, as i wonder if it was the offspring of the elusive panthers?? 🤷

Interesting none of the many dog and feral cat hunters have got one. Like the common mainline thylacine & foxes/wild dogs, Yowies, the feral cat can easily be mis-identified. Particularly by those inclined to fertile imaginations. It can't be excluded possibly one of 2 were historically smuggled into Australia, but the idea they are still around would be supported by a hard copy that could be DNA tested, hunters would have got one. Additionally, being always "black" it compromises the credibility of the idea they are somehow established & breeding. Certainly the habitat is suitable. No convincing trail camera evidence has been obtained, and those tools have relatively easily located many creatures the common scientist or enthusiast could not otherwise. And further, they leave other distinctive evidence if resident, which is strangely absent. Big black cats? Likely. Panthers/pumas? : Figments.

I lived in Lancefield Victoria. In the 1980s, a farmer living in the Tooborac area west of Mount William, which is near Lancefield, was checking his stock at night. He had what he believed, a panther jump at his vehicle. There was another sighting by a resident at the back of Lancefield, a black cat walking through grass. He personally told me, it was as big as a german shepherd with a long tail. Further south a few years later, another sighting near Riddells Creek. The story is that live panther mascots of USA forces in Victoria, let the panther/s loose before returning to the States.

The use of paid actors does not help to convince anyone. Also, leopards (including black) do not eat in the open, so that sheep was not killed or eaten by a leopard. Fun little mockumentary, though, just the crap one comes to expect from the discovery channel.

Nothing would really surprise me. Years ago, Pablo Escobar had dozens of exotic animals in his private zoo, including big cats. After his capture, most of the animals were placed in proper facilities. Some hippos escaped and are thriving . They're called the cocaine hippos. People love keeping apex predators as pets, and some choose the big cats. They don't particularly care about the illegalities. Of course, some may escape or get turned loose to fend for themselves. Anywhere there's a lot of open space, non native species can thrive. There are regular reports of black pumas in the Southeastern US. As far as I know, no one has captured on. We are within the former range of the big cats, so it's entirely possible some escaped captivity or some are reclaiming their old range. With the Everglades being taken over by pythons that eat almost all of the potential prey of the big cats. There's plenty of wilderness so it wouldn't be shocking if some cats choose to migrate to better areas. While I hope that Australia doesn't have a growing population of bug cats, I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few former pets who got abandoned.

About 1981, just before I joined the Australian Army, I was helping to clear a paddock of some huge tall trees and mallyroots down somewhere near Mandurah or Manjimup or something. We got down there and the car was covered in thick dust. Next morning - all over the car and all around the house and right out into the paddock - were some huge cat prints. Massive - think of the biggest man you know and get him to spread his hands as wide as he possibly can ... now add about a third of that width again. Definitely a big cat. You can tell cat prints (plus - dogs don't usually climb over Landrover roofs). I never saw the animal and guessed it must have been an escaped (or released) lion or tiger. I wouldn't want to claim any more than that, or try to be mysterious. But, what I've said is dinkum.

That scat probably is fox, I believe leopards, like domestic cats bury their scat.. many of the video's taken claiming to be 'big cats' are clearly feral cats , it doesnt take close examination to see the obvious! It's like believing in 'bigfoot' or yowies, no real evidence to support the existence of either creature, but people will still believe, because they want to believe!..Example?..In America, bigfoot exploiters actually make money from faking it to the faithful believers!

In winter of 1972 i was visiting Sydney and went to Bondi. I decided to walk along the cliff path on the South end and encountered a man walking a large black jaguar on a leash. I could hardly believe what I was seeing. It was huge and if it had wanted to get away , it easily could have. I have often wondered where it came from and how it was domesticated. Any one else know about this ?

Technology has come a long way, even I hunt and spot with thermal. You have to also remember cats have great eye sight, so any form of light be it infrared, red light or plain white light will make you known to the animal and in most cases scare it away! I thought flashing that spotlight was counter productive Don't get me wrong, I think there is a big cat out there.

It's the perfect environment for them tbh, with lots of prey and thousands of km of wilderness to hide in. (You don't get black Cougars, so they must be Leopards orJaguars if people are seeing big black cats...there would need to be breeding population though to keep them going though so it can't just be a single cat) Also...The problem is if you provide the Gov with concrete evidence....they will just go in and kill them all as an invasive species... so maybe best to keep it under wraps if you do find one....

Stop stuffing around and get some good thermal gear, you will be able to get in close and not startle them with your light, then you will be able to correctly identify what you are looking at. Also don't know who does your DNA testing, potentially fox or possibly from cat family?????? All your field experts that have actually never seen a big cat killing an animal yet they say by the way the neck was crushed and eaten out it must have been a cat! Most predators choke the neck, also the calf kill - I have seen foxes clean a calf exactly like that usually done by a family group, if you left it another day or two they would start chewing down the ribs. In 2007 I was losing calves almost nightly with no sign of cause of death, only when I skinned one calf I found it had heaps of tiny puncture marks, that night I shot seven foxes around my calving paddock and stopped losing calves. They were killing and not even eating them, possibly just stockpiling the pantry. The fact is that calf if not killed by foxes may have just died for whatever reason then became fox food. Also I have seen a lot of strange fox scat usually from a change in diet. Not saying there are no big cats just saying you are trying to make something from nothing in this video.
