A Novice Trip to the White Rim Road in Canyonland

I am a beginner overlander and wanted to try the White Rim Road as all the information says it is a good trail for beginners/intermediate overlanders (and it is a bucket list of mine). Here are some of the insights that I learned driving and camping over 3 days.

The Napolean Prestige 500 Grill Is In Excellent Condition Because It Uses 304 Stainless

After 2 yrs of heavy use, I am doing my annual cleaning of the Napolean Prestige 500 Grill to show why using a grill made from 304 stainless steel is better than grills made from 403 stainless steel (typical big box grill). It does cost more but I do not have to buy a new grill or rebuild it every 2 years.

    Hi there, Ioved your video. I am headed out that way from Illinois later this month to hike San Luis Peak from the West Willow trailhead. Can you tell me if there was water as you headed up the trail from the trailhead? We want to set up camp and would need a water source?

    • @ruffnitinretirement964
      @ruffnitinretirement964 Рік тому

      There is the creek itself at the trail head that was a good source of water. On the hike forward from the Willow Creek trailhead, I passed a few valleys that had a trickle of water crossing the trail. No rushing stream to quickly fill up a bottle of water but using a straw or pump system probably might get you enough. I think it will depend on the time of year and any recent rain. There was nothing like the waterfalls that I showed in my video on the trail head.

    • @jimmudra1154
      @jimmudra1154 Рік тому

      Yes - there is more than enough rope to put the tent on the ground. In fact, my original lift was from the ground. I lifted the tent about 1 foot and let it rest a few hours to make sure my installation of the hoist system worked as expected. And since then, I have raised/lower the tent several dozen times without issue.

    what straps did you use to hold up the tent while storing and how did you attach them to the pulley system.

    • @jimmudra1154
      @jimmudra1154 2 роки тому

      The black straps came with the Harkin system. The green straps are regular ratchet straps that I bought from a big box store (I think it was rated for 300# safe load each for about $12.) I just added an additional set of 4 hooks to independently attach the green straps as a backup system for the Harkin system.

    Great video. I am going to build something similar very soon. One observation I have is on the anchor point of the pulley system. You have only 1 eyebolt holding the entire system while lifting/lowering. Do you think reinforcement should be added there? My system will have 4 eyebolts supporting my rtt and 1 at the anchor point. I have calculated all of the forces and it seems it will be sufficient.

    • @jimmudra1154
      @jimmudra1154 2 роки тому

      It will never hurt to add more - but I did get a similar question a few months ago and here was my reply "That one got me thinking, the static force would have to be 200 lbs. In my set up, a portion of the weight of the tent is taken up by my backup system. However, I still wanted to investigate your point. The maker of the hoist system must have done this calculation on the vertical wall otherwise they would not sell this system. I found an equation to calculate the screw allowable withdrawal load (F=2880 * SG^2 * dia of screw). If I use an average specific gravity of pine to be 0.4 #/in and a 0.25 diameter screw, this gives a load of 115 #/in penetration meaning that you need to screw the at least 2 inches into the wood to hold 200#." One just has to make sure that they are in the heart of the 2 x 4 stud.

    This might be a ridiculous question - the chrome strap you disconnected with your glove, technically is holding all of the weight? When suspended by the hoist, if the chrome buckles failed, the tent would fall to the floor? Sorry, I’m just confused how the 4 lines coming down from the ceiling are secured to or around the tent. Thank you!

    • @ruffnitinretirement964
      @ruffnitinretirement964 2 роки тому

      Yes, you are right - the black strap with the chrome buckle is holding all the weight when I lower the tent. Since the system is rated for 200 #s, the buckles should be rated for at least that amount and since they seem to be very sturdy, I bet that they are rated for a lot higher. After 3 years of use, I have not seen any fraying of the straps and confident of the system's ability (but I still use the green straps as a backup). Go to time stamp 12:29 to see how I remove the tent from the truck and onto the hoist system. I slip the black strap underneath the tent while it sits on the bed rails (the tent sits about 4-5 inches above the bed of the truck), then I buckle the straps together.

    Hello. You have a lot of structural support on the roof but do you not have 200lbs pulling on that single eyebolt on the vertical wall?

    Nice. Can you add a winch

    • @ruffnitinretirement964
      @ruffnitinretirement964 3 роки тому

      I do not see why you could not add a winch. However, even manually, it does not weigh too much. If you add a winch, just be careful on how much space you need to spool up the rope. Since it has it has 5 or 6 pulleys, you need 5 or 6 feet of rope to spool for every 1 foot of vertical tent movement.

      I just looked at Amazon (FYI - I do not get any compensation, so no conflict of interest) - they have it as "HARKEN - Truck Cap Overhead Garage Storage Hoist, Self-Leveling, Safe Anti-Drop System, Easy One-Person Operation, Smart Garage Organization". Amazon lists the different models and it is hard to read the model #, so I checked the Harken website. I got the #7806 10 foot model (On Amazon - it looks like either a 4 or 6). This model can handle 200 lbs - just make sure it is the 200 lb version. Since my RTT is 200 lbs, as shown in the video, I added an additional strap system independent of the hoist system that helps carry the weight during storage. The kit does not come with any of the wood - so make sure your wood is not curved or bowed (not the end of the world but makes it easier to install). The Harkin Website has a great video on the install. www.hoister.com/productdetail.aspx?id=6160&taxid=648

    Thanks for your real-world application of using this in a RT tent. Knowing the pilot is enough helps with safety concerns. I have only been able to use my RT tent once since I aquired it and it was too cold for my wife without a heater. I bought the heater shortly after but was concerned about it falling over. I also considered hanging it, as I am a retired engineer too. Thanks again.

    • @ruffnitinretirement964
      @ruffnitinretirement964 3 роки тому

      Thanks for the comment - having the pilot on will not keep you warm, but it also allows you not to freeze. I was in Colorado at 9000 ft, and it was in the upper 20s at night and the pilot light kept the tent in the low 50s (with me only). With a good sleeping bag, that was all I needed. Then first thing in the morning, I turn it to low and warm the tent to 70F, then I get out of my sleeping bag. You can always have it on low if you keep a window unzipped but it would consume a lot of propane and the 1lb tank will run out after 2-3 hrs.
