Making a Documentary | VLOG 02 - KEEP GOING | "The Wind in her Hands"
This is the second Episode of a VLOG series about my process of making the documentary "The Wind in her Hands" (WT):
21-year-old Elena Sandera started windsurfing less than 4 years ago and has been trying hard to qualify for the Olympic Games in the new IQFoil class ever since. As the last chance gets closer and closer, a deeply repressed trauma catches up with her. The biggest battle is not with the sport itself, but with the sacrifices it demands and, above all, mental strength.
Let's discover the aspects of filmmaking and the incredible Story of Elena while it actually happens. Feel free to participate by asking questions or suggesting topics. It probably will have an influence on the next vlog.

We shot it in Slog2 and graded it with davinci resolve. Still it is 8bit because of the camera but definetely the Atomos Recorder gave us much more Depth in Colours as it is recording in 4:2:2. Thank you so much! The final Film will definitely take some time. We're planning on march to start festival applications. The Festival circuit will take a year roughly. So only the patrons will be invited to screenings upfront ;) but till then you'll see some more vlogs like this going into many topics of filmmaking and this specific story.

    Awesome work! May I ask how you set details in your video settings while using the tiffen filter? Most people recommend reducing details to -7 and add sharpening in post, how does it work with diffusion filters on ?

    • @siehstefilm7695
      @siehstefilm7695 3 роки тому

      Thank you! Yes i also keep the Details at -7 when shooting with slog. And I think it's not even enough especially when using the native Sony lenses which are very sharp. So one more good thing about the diffusion filter is it takes away some of that digital sharpness. No problem to sharpen it in post if you want to achieve a more cinematic creamy look than absolute sharpness.

    Beautiful work. I am a fellow A7S3 user but I've been editing in FCP. I want to switch to resolve to grade but worry it's going to get so complicated for archiving projects if I continue to still use FCP for cutting, organization, and processing the final project. Can you do all aspects of editing in DaVinci Resolve directly? Or have you had experience using multiple editing software seamlessly? Finally, also, which glow effect do you use or is it just called glow effect? Loving this.

    • @siehstefilm7695
      @siehstefilm7695 3 роки тому

      Hi Matthew, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I switched from premiere to resolve completely. Sometimes there were problems with editing in premiere and grading with davinci. Why switching the software when you can do everything with one of them. I needed some time to adjust to the editing in resolve but it's fantastic. Of course you can define your own shortcuts and it is so much easier to do everything with one software. Especially when it comes to corrections for customer. Also audio mixing is so much better than with premiere. The glow effect is included in the studio version and is a powerful tool but the pro mist filter is creating some of the glowing in the highlights as well right in camera. Is that helpful for you?

    • @MatthewChenDirector

      one more question. When you are applying the LOG3 LUT built in Davnici Resolve. With that work flow do you need to overexpose by 2 stops (ETTR) like a lot of other LUTS out there (eg. Leeming LUT), or can you just expose right at 0.00?

    • @siehstefilm7695
      @siehstefilm7695 3 роки тому

      @@MatthewChenDirector Hi Matthew, sometimes I don't apply the conversion lut at all but in this case on the third note. After noise reduction and a correction note (exposure and White balance). The conversion lut wants you to expose middle grey at 55% I think. That could even mean to underexpose the shot depending on your subject and the surrounding. But I am overexposing the shot up to 2 stops depending on the shot and the subject to reduce the slog noise. That's why I do corrections before the conversion lut. Sometimes it's better to not use it at all for having more options after applying the conversion depending on where you convert to. Usually rec 709. Often I try to open up the shot a little after the conversion. But of course the conversion makes things much easier. Is that similar to your workflow in fcp?

    • @MatthewChenDirector
      @MatthewChenDirector 3 роки тому

      @@siehstefilm7695 yes very similar. I am currently using a LUT from Paul Leeming, which requires you to overexpose quite significantly as it darkens the image considerably once applied. I noticed that the built in LUT from Resolve does not darken the image but just adds back the color and contrast ... this seems to be very nice. Of course I understand you could still over expose a bit (using aperture not ISO), so that you can reduce noise further but that's good practice independent of LUT behaviour.

      Hi, I'm not sure. I probably were staying at 1600 while using the VND but roughly everything under 3200 (or a little more) is fine with me depending on the light conditions but no later then 6400 i would prefer 12800 as the sony a7s iii is a "dual iso" camera. Is that helpful?

    These colors are top notch! What LUT(s) are you using for grading? I'm just using the basic Sony slog3 to rec709 LUT and I don't get anything as beautiful as this!

    • @siehstefilm7695
      @siehstefilm7695 3 роки тому

      Thanks Nick! I am also using the conversion to rec709 but no other LUT. What often gives me beautiful colors and a great look is to use the glow effect in davinci resolve at the very end before I have my last node for grain. You also could try the film emulation luts but take the gain down a lot.
