I lived and worked in Chile for about three years back in the day. I got caught in a bus passing by the Spanish embassy during the time when Spain detained Pinochet for human rights abuses. There were a ton of pro-Pinochet people fighting with police outside the embassy. I suddenly noticed a bunch of passengers jump out of their seats and close all the windows of the bus. I was wondering why for a few seconds and then the tear gas hit. Seriously, tear gas sucks. You do not want to be anywhere near it. The bus driver did some crazy driving to get us onto the side streets and nobody was complaining. We were all hunched over trying to breathe and rubbing our eyes. A really big faux pas I used to commit was not opening doors for women and stepping on and off elevators before them. Men are NOT supposed to do that. I got some seriously evil looks for that. I learned quickly to walk around with the mindset of a refined 19th century gentleman. As a man, you kiss women as a greeting. Women kiss each other, as well. Men don't kiss each other (at least in public). Society might be less homophobic now so maybe that's changed a bit. And don't actually put your lips on the person's cheek. Make it an "air kiss" where your cheeks touch but that's the extent of it. Keep your wallet in your front pocket in crowded areas. I felt several hands "accidentally" brush up against my back pockets whenever I went to Persa Bio Bio, a flea market type of place. Have the carabineros shut that place down? It seemed like everyone being sold there was stolen ha ha. It was a great place to buy cheap music. Don't hang out in Santiago too much if you have any sort of respiratory problem or hate bad air. The rest of the country is great but Santiago has Mexico City style air pollution. Maybe there have been efforts to improve it but I can't imagine it being any better unless everyone quit driving their car and burning nasty stuff to stay warm in the winter. Bring your own sauce if you get invited to a barbecue. The Chilean definition of barbecue is very different for the norteamericano idea of bbq. They like the meat plain with maybe some salt. The produce in Chile is great, though. Great selection and prices. I really enjoyed living there overall. People are very laid back and cool for the most part. The country is so different from the north end to the south, incredible geographic diversity. Definitely a must visit for any traveler.
The pollution air is only on the plane of the valley. All the west side near the mountains have like 10% of pollution. Santiago is mostly a city of 85%midle lower class sadly. Chile is the better place in South America. But steel a third-world country. (its the mentality). you cant compare Mexico city air with Santiago. As a Chilean i would not recommend Chile as a destination for vacation in southamerica, Santiago has together with 2 other cities like Valparaiso and Viña many pickpockets/thiefs. Not to mention if you wanna enjoy a dinner outside of a resturang be prepared for dirty tricks from people begging for money, not to mention that after sundown its dangerous.

I'm Chilean and I can tell about those problems. Taxi Drivers aren't usually scammers, but it's very easy to find them, they manipulate their shitty thing and make you pay way more than you should. But that's mostly offset by the fact that you can just take an Uber or use the public transport system, wich isn't bad at all. City pollution is an exaggeration, Santiago is very polluted in winter but it's pretty clean the rest of the year, it has to do with geography rather than bad politics. Yeah, everybody smokes ciggarettes, though by LAW you can't smoke indoors unless it's your house, anywhere, the "smoke zones" for restaurants for example are usually outdoors, and most of them don't even have one.
In the three years I lived there, I'd say about 5% of the taxi drivers tried to rip me off. If you can speak a bit of Spanish, tell them you know what they were trying to do and leave what the appropriate amount is and get out of the car they won't do anything. They're just hoping you're a tourist who doesn't know any better. Central American countries are much worse about this. No arguments about Santiago's air pollution and the smoking, although less than 60% smoke obviously. Just get out of Santiago, they rest of the country is underpopulated, beautiful and smoke free.

I will give the number one tip about Santiago just don't go is crap.
I lived and worked in Chile for about three years back in the day. I got caught in a bus passing by the Spanish embassy during the time when Spain detained Pinochet for human rights abuses. There were a ton of pro-Pinochet people fighting with police outside the embassy. I suddenly noticed a bunch of passengers jump out of their seats and close all the windows of the bus. I was wondering why for a few seconds and then the tear gas hit. Seriously, tear gas sucks. You do not want to be anywhere near it. The bus driver did some crazy driving to get us onto the side streets and nobody was complaining. We were all hunched over trying to breathe and rubbing our eyes. A really big faux pas I used to commit was not opening doors for women and stepping on and off elevators before them. Men are NOT supposed to do that. I got some seriously evil looks for that. I learned quickly to walk around with the mindset of a refined 19th century gentleman. As a man, you kiss women as a greeting. Women kiss each other, as well. Men don't kiss each other (at least in public). Society might be less homophobic now so maybe that's changed a bit. And don't actually put your lips on the person's cheek. Make it an "air kiss" where your cheeks touch but that's the extent of it. Keep your wallet in your front pocket in crowded areas. I felt several hands "accidentally" brush up against my back pockets whenever I went to Persa Bio Bio, a flea market type of place. Have the carabineros shut that place down? It seemed like everyone being sold there was stolen ha ha. It was a great place to buy cheap music. Don't hang out in Santiago too much if you have any sort of respiratory problem or hate bad air. The rest of the country is great but Santiago has Mexico City style air pollution. Maybe there have been efforts to improve it but I can't imagine it being any better unless everyone quit driving their car and burning nasty stuff to stay warm in the winter. Bring your own sauce if you get invited to a barbecue. The Chilean definition of barbecue is very different for the norteamericano idea of bbq. They like the meat plain with maybe some salt. The produce in Chile is great, though. Great selection and prices. I really enjoyed living there overall. People are very laid back and cool for the most part. The country is so different from the north end to the south, incredible geographic diversity. Definitely a must visit for any traveler.
The pollution air is only on the plane of the valley. All the west side near the mountains have like 10% of pollution. Santiago is mostly a city of 85%midle lower class sadly. Chile is the better place in South America. But steel a third-world country. (its the mentality). you cant compare Mexico city air with Santiago. As a Chilean i would not recommend Chile as a destination for vacation in southamerica, Santiago has together with 2 other cities like Valparaiso and Viña many pickpockets/thiefs. Not to mention if you wanna enjoy a dinner outside of a resturang be prepared for dirty tricks from people begging for money, not to mention that after sundown its dangerous.

RIP-OFF TAXI DRIVERS, 3RD WORST CITY POLLUTION IN THE WORLD, & 60% OF CUNTRY SMOKE CIGARETTES.
I'm Chilean and I can tell about those problems. Taxi Drivers aren't usually scammers, but it's very easy to find them, they manipulate their shitty thing and make you pay way more than you should. But that's mostly offset by the fact that you can just take an Uber or use the public transport system, wich isn't bad at all. City pollution is an exaggeration, Santiago is very polluted in winter but it's pretty clean the rest of the year, it has to do with geography rather than bad politics. Yeah, everybody smokes ciggarettes, though by LAW you can't smoke indoors unless it's your house, anywhere, the "smoke zones" for restaurants for example are usually outdoors, and most of them don't even have one.

In the three years I lived there, I'd say about 5% of the taxi drivers tried to rip me off. If you can speak a bit of Spanish, tell them you know what they were trying to do and leave what the appropriate amount is and get out of the car they won't do anything. They're just hoping you're a tourist who doesn't know any better. Central American countries are much worse about this. No arguments about Santiago's air pollution and the smoking, although less than 60% smoke obviously. Just get out of Santiago, they rest of the country is underpopulated, beautiful and smoke free.
