$20 DIY Digital Nut Height Gauge w Jason Burns
Переглядів 2,2 тис.Рік тому
Hey, this is part of our weekly series of AMA's on my patreon. This week we talked with Jason Burns of Burns Banjos about how to set up both open back and resonator banjos. It was a good long in depth look at the subject and we were at it for a couple of hours. I don't know no nothing about banjos, so I asked a ton of questions. During our time together Jason showed off a modification for a dig...

I thought you were using a dewalt screwdriver as a flashlight...as I have done many times!
Greetings from Dumont NJ
Yo dude !
I tried this on my kitchen table and it ruined it.
Now available from Stewart Macdonald for the low low price of 4 easy payments of 99.99!! Lol what a stupid thing
That’s genius, I think I’ll make one.
If I saw someone using this tool on my hd28, and then pull my bridge pins with a pair of steel flush cutters, there would be violence.
ua-cam.com/video/IYzlVDlE72w/v-deo.html
What is the point of that exactly
There is no point at all
so you don't have to remove the strings or restring a set when testing
Nice!
I loved the vocabulary comment. I've been teaching English as foreign language for a living for more than 15 years and I had to look up "rambunctious", "egregious" and "cantankerous". But it's the attitude, the voice, the underlying work ethic and the obvious intelligence that keep drawing me to Ted out of so many other luthiers who make videos.
Ted has the best channel on this topic on UA-cam. I've watched most of them and his is far and away above most.
Unbelievable. Thanks, Doug, for making the time to show us this invaluable technique.
I watch every Ted video start to finish, fantastic educator. I’ve often thought Stew-Mac should work with him somehow now that Dan it’s semi-retired.
Future Greg here. @48:20, don't listen to Ted. I've watched more minutes of this mans armpit and elbow than anyone else I've watched. I've been watching Ted since him posting a full 15 minute video was a 'holy jeez' moment. Cheers all, from Chinada.
I have Ted to thank for my career, his videos taught me everything I know until I gained a paid apprenticeship
A true craftsman and very entertaining.
I watch Ted on a regular basis...going back in his catalog and looking forward to latest videos....his format of not needing to be "the star" of the videos like some do....his skills are the star, his narrative is the connection
I love watching Ted work. He have patience of steel. I've dabbled in guitar repair and Ted's patience ,skill and calm demeanor are beyond comprehension. And his humor is Awesome. Lol
Yeah, he does more for us than just teach us. He also helps us relax. And have something to go to when were stressed out. But as for guitars, hes the best to watch
Nice to actually see Ted's face. I'm one of those who neither play nor repair guitars. I just like to watch competent people at their craft. But also, there is a moral aspect: fixing things that are originally of good quality, rather than just trashing and buying a new one, just appeals to my sense of value and stewardship.
One other note, I know electronics, yet I would video my own work if someone wanted me to do the work they cannot do themselves. Because of Ted I know when I'm asked to do the work, I'll video the process and explain why I did what I did to get the electronics to work againg.
I would hope when someone is willing to work on my Uncle's D28 Martin, would take a video of the process not just to show watchers how it's done but to show me that the work was documented and show me that his work was above normal and the process can be seen that the work was done right as well the play ability caused this afterwards and watching this makes it work in favor of the Luthier who did the work. Video of the work is a tool needed in today's craftsmanship of Luthiery today.
What a gem of a video
I am an amateur luthier (if even that) and have learned SO MUCH from Ted. I enjoy his videos tremendously. He made the statement “get a cheap guitar and try it before you do it on a heirloom.”. That really resonated with me. For example, a neck reset on a cheap guitar is a current project. Having cared for my mother I certainly respect anyone who does.
Im learning a lot from Ted too. Ive devoted most of my life to playing than actually knowing anything about guitars. I guess getting a bit older now(54) ive become very interested in all this. And he is awesome. Hes the best guy to watch for me by far.
Finished job not shown... but some things are new for me. Thanks
49:15 I immediately thought about the Morris fingerboard snaffu.. oof lol
He's a WORDSMITH...I agree about the vocabulary part you mentioned. I've learned some new useful words myself... Thanks, Mr. Woodford.
I give you a million dollars! Wait! A gazillion million billion dollars haha
What is regule?
Regule was actually the original refrigerator demon in Ghostbusters. Later changed to Zuul.
50 pounds of M&H 192 high clarity is about 32 liters, or about 8.5 gallons.
What is a s Loothin word?
Genius
I would think 0000 steel wool would be pretty quick oxidizying. Awesome tips thanks.
I believe the byproduct of oxygen a concentrator is nitrogen they don't cost a lot to run i'm not sure what the cost difference would be or if the flow would be enough on the small medical units but you could potentially use this is you didn't have access to bottled gas.
The nitrogen is to displace oxygen completely so that there isn’t combustion
This is the best channel ever.
Will is the man!!!
Frank was the James Brown, Tom Brady, Tiger Woods, Babe Ruth, The Beatles, you name it of luthiery...
I've learned so much from watching Ted. I've patched up several instruments and antiques based on his guidance, be it setup or finish touch-up. Between what I picked up from tinkering all my life and what he shows, I'm no longer afraid of 'uncertain projects'.
That's an amazing guitar
“I tend to measure time by the bad things that happened to me in life.” Thank you Frank for being such a good part in so many of our lives, peace to you.🙏
What ever happened to that mandocello build?
Why make a video and not share what you are using? To everyone that is begging this guy for info the technique he is using is called French Polishing. He did NOT invent it it's been around since bible days. I don't know what oil he's using but a bunch of guys use olive oil. I hear raw linseed oil with the shellac works much better but haven't tried it yet. Hope this helps .
I won't say too much now, but I wouldn't think the sort of oil is important. Important though is that you remove the oil using a cloth very lightly wetted by alcohol in the end. This in a whole sequence. On the other hand, if it's a poly substrate that one should give a solid base, but generally oil softens shellac - well, this is a whole science of course...
