Inglewood Instruments
United States
Приєднався 29 кві 2019
Congrats and welcome, you've just found a treasure trove of videos about relatively unknown instruments most commonly known as dulcimer guitars and "easy" (3-string) guitars. We refer to our line as the River Guitars.
The Inglewood Instruments' mission is to offer the highest quality instruments that help you get to the joy of making music in the least amount of time. Along the way we like to offer interviews, techniques, song ideas, how-to's guides, etc.
There's something here for the new player, as well as the professional, and everyone in between.
Music should be accessible to everyone, regardless of skill level or experience, so our instruments are designed with this in mind.
They don't take the place of standard guitars, ukuleles, mandolins, or banjos, they're something different.
So, welcome. Thank you for taking the time to read this far, and we hope you find some great ideas and instruction here.
If you ever need us, just email hey@heyinglewood.com

Wonderfull
aren't they fabulous?! Came in and knocked that out in maybe 2 takes.
Surely that’s the deluxe version. So nice!
You are right John, it is our deluxe
V nice.
I don't know of that song but I think I need to. Good performance.
thanks John
Def check it out! High energy, sad despite the tempo, I’m a sucker for that sort of thing. The crowd feedback creation explained on song Exploder is pretty interesting if you’re into that sort of thing!
Haven't picked up my merlin in months. Just the motivation I needed. Love your work.
really appreciate that feedback Stefan, keeps me wanting to create more content.
Can you please release this beautiful cover on Amazon music? Would love to listen to it again and again. Thank you!!!
I will let them know!
This is a first. Never heard bluegrass played on a ukulele before but it sounds very nice especially with Zach and Maggie White
They are pretty fabulous… and Tyler nailed it well as well can be (on a dulcimer, not ukulele)
Woah, what instrument is that?
@@michealnotmichael6595 it my Cumberland River Guitar, we just released ☀️
It’s my new line of River Guitars and Dulcimers heyinglewood.com/collections/the-cumberland Have a gander, jump in the mailing list, etc! Discount on the preorders for list folks!
Thank you Ryan. I can’t wait for my Cumberland guitar. I play the Seagull Merlin (both the G-tuned and the D-tuned versions). I am anticipating many, many questions from my musician friends when they see the amazing looking Cumberland. I already field many about the Merlins. My congratulations on bringing your amazing project to fruition and my gratitude for your video tutorials that have helped so much in transforming my life for the better. Music is the ultimate therapy for what ails the soul. Again, my heartfelt gratitude from a 36 year (Australian) army veteran.
Sir you are a gentleman and a scholar and I look very much forward to meeting you online and getting your you Cumberland asap!!
They need a monkey grip, that is the scientific answer to getting "tone to the bone"
lol... over 1000 dollars. get fucked.
Hello I am interested in one myself, but I noticed it only had seven frets. what frets did you leave off the scale at that length?
The Merlin’s have 7 frets so they can cover all the notes in an octave. The Cumberlands have 12 frets, with a “6.5” fret (flat 7th on the scale), and then the 4 notes above the octave mark (repeating the notes of the previous octave) Does that help?
Mass produced CNC machine instruments of basic quality. Not enough frets, cant even play ole songs like ole joe clark, or cluck ole hen.
Well, it is what it is, I suppose, and why it’s a pretty inexpensive instrument. Have you seen the Cumberland model I released this week? This is a good addendum to what you’re saying: ua-cam.com/video/p6QgzZAlr0U/v-deo.html
Brilliant. Looks super fun to play.
It really is!
This is incredible, i never thought I'd see a brand new type of stringed instrument, I'm in absolute awe and excitement!!
@@wolfharbinger thanks so much
Is this the same as a guitar dulcimer
Yes, technically a Merlin is a dulcimer guitar 😎 I just released my own line you might find interesting: heyinglewood.com/collections/the-cumberland
How do they compare cost wise
heyinglewood.com/collections/the-cumberland
Seagull M4 is $150 or $210 with built in pick up and tuner. This is over $1000 with nothing.
True, but, as mentioned, while they fill a similar musical function, they are not the same tier, and as such they aren’t the same price. I enjoy the Merlins for what they are, but after a few years it was clear a more precision instrument was required so I designed it, and now there are quality options… maybe not for everyone, but nothing really is, right? Hopefully we’ll be able to offer another tier later next year, so stay tuned. Thx! 😉
@@HeyInglewood Yes yours are 5 time's the price of any on the market now and from an unknown manufacturer. Most dulcimers are made for to help everyday people to have something they can sound good playing. Yours is priced outside the range of the average person who buys this. For a first run you should have kept it lower tier to build a fan base then higher priced later. You just cut off more than half your potential consumers especially with the economy so bad where people are struggling to buy groceries and gas.
I have a Seagull Merlin and I love it. But I am more of a ukulele player. Your River Dulcimer is lovely, by the way.
Wow, thank you! I am rather proud of it!
Simple and Beautiful, thanks for sharing
You’re welcome 😊 they really did a great job didn’t they?!
sweet!
Thanks!! Hope it's helpful!
What is the scale... Sorry if you said in the video
If you mean scale length, it's 21".... if you mean the musical scale, it's mostly D major. Strings are tuned DAD, and it's fretted to be in the key of D. Technically you can get the key of G out of it as well, but with the DAD tuning it's better to think of G as a secondary (so to speak).
When will you reveal the price?
On Sept 24... on launch day
Id love to buy the guitar fretted one. Sadly, my budget doesnt allow me to. You have really thought this thing out. Hats off to you, Sir. 👍
I'd like to get the guitar version
And coincidentally, I would like for you to get one! 😉
Very good!
Glad you think so! They totally nailed it. And Tyler picked up the instruments for the first time only about 20 minutes before this was recorded!!🤯
It's just a stick dulcimer in a new body....
Similar, but not quite! They're both based on the mountain dulcimer, but the construction methods are fully different. The Strumstick being the most known version of a stick dulcimer, I went ahead and broke down the details between the two. Hope it's helpful! ua-cam.com/video/c7ct4uop7y4/v-deo.html
A 'beautiful song machine'! that sounds and looks great! I'm in!!😊
Rock on! Just make sure you’re on that list! heyinglewood.com/pages/join-the-preorder-waitlist
Its a dulcimer, they've been around a while 😅
Quite a while, in fact!! ☺️😜🥳 I guess it’s a little of the “old made new” kind of thing?
Review ? Great looking instrument! Too bad I can't hear it being played.
Hi - we do have Brad playing on our channel - go and have a listen
Here it is! ua-cam.com/video/GR-Nlmkrpjk/v-deo.html
Whoever did the on-screen subtitles needs to learn the words Bouzouki and Octomandolin, lol. In any case, I'm glad to see Ryan's journey toward designing and producing his own model of stick dulcimer is about to come to fruition, and is getting some attention from recording artists! Congrats to Inglewood!
🙈
This has been added to the list of songs that “makes me cry but idk why”
Yuuuup, heard. Makes me feel young person feels.
This is an amazing song. Artist ans song name?😊😊
Eva Cassel, “Somebody Else” - full version on the channel!
Yup❤
Idk why else to say
Nothing else needed… she killed it. One take. I think we took a second for safety and it was equally flawless. Full version is somewhere in UA-cam 🥳😎

Great video!! I've been playing guitar for.... 35 years (how the hell did that happen 😂). I've played both the Strumstick and the Merlin, they're both quite fun to play! I also have an Appalachian dulcimer, so haven't rushed out an bought a stick dulcimer, but it's on my list 💜
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful! I recently designed my own version you may want to be aware of, too: heyinglewood.com/pages/join-the-preorder-waitlist
Excellent!
Thanks!!
Hes really good.
And his main instruments are actually bass and cello!
@@HeyInglewood Hes a good all rounder. I can play bass, drums and guitar, and the dulcimer. I have a small problem with my dulcimer. When its tuned, as you go up the neck, it starts to go out of tune slightly. It gets sharper. You havnt got an adjustable bridge on a dulcimer. I have a D tuned dulcimer. 🎸🎶
Yep, that’s a byproduct of their neck and Fretboard designs, almost definitely. Is the exact problem I was having such a frustrating time with on existing Instruments , and what are most wanted to correct for on the Cumberland!! And we achieved it!
@@HeyInglewood You did it with thecumberland.?
This is exquisite.
Yeah, they kinda crushed it. I didn’t know what they were doing until they arrived. Amazing.
Peaceful enough to remind me of The Carpenters. Well done. Sounds amazing!
Thanks for listening… I will let them know!!
Reminds me of Allison Krause which is a huge compliment!! REALLY GOOD PICKIN as well as the vocals!!
Agreed!!! There’s a lot of (welcome) similarities… they both have gorgeous voices, don’t they?
Sweet Caroline would be great thanks.
You got it! Already working it up!! Hopefully ready by next week… subscribe if not already, keep an eye out 👀
Closed my eyes and soaked the song in. Went to a good place, cheers
I screenshot this and sent to Eva… got a lot of ❤️ back. Give her a follow on the various platforms… I think it’s just a matter of time before she’s a household name. ☺️
The cumberland is fully fretted. I never noticed before.
It’s actually both! There are two tiers, the deluxe and the players edition, and both can come in fully fretted, or traditional Dulicmer fretted
@@HeyInglewood thanks.
Thanks for having us! Sounds great
Played great first tho!!
I had such a great time making both of these! I glad the damage from FedEx was minimal and fixable. Thank you so much for allowing me to make something cool for you.
Of course!! Reflecting…. It’s probably good I didn’t realize you were going to make something for me when I sent it to you… I’d have gotten shy and declined, I think. It’s crazy to think of someone doing that for you. ☺️
Where can I purchase for my bass?
Do you mean the purpleheart or a bass Cumberland River Dulcimer? For the first, it'll just depend on your locale. I can get it at the local lumber store (but kinda mid/high grade lumber, like where you buy cabinet++ stuff). StewMac (maybe) and Woodcraft (definitely) would have it in the sizes you need though. If for a River Dulcimer, we won't have a bass version for a while yet. :(
@@HeyInglewood Purpleheart as illustrated in the video. I'm in Brooklyn, New York. It appears in the video the fretboard is set up for LED's. I could be wrong
@@HeyInglewood Just searched on StewMac and they have no slotted Purpleheart fingerboards
I must say I like both❤
You know, I feel the same! 😉
@HeyInglewood I am ready to get at least one...been patiently waiting.
This was beautiful! ❤
Right? Very impressed. They just walked in and did 3 songs and walked out. 45 min tops, and Tyler was playing them for the first time. Blew my mind.
Your videos are awesome. I'm learning a ton, but this is my first instrument. I struggle reading music. I'm okay with one finger. Fret music is where I feel comfortable right now. Can you please put more videos out playing with one finger. Thanks Jim
Jim! After putting videos + videos into the void it’s so encouraging to hear that they are helping! Many many of the songs on our channel can be played with 1 finger (most either detail or touch on that point). “Jolene” is another really easy one to tackle, if you’re looking. 2 frets total!!
@HeyInglewood Thank you! I will try to tackle that! Just one more question please, is there a trick to holding down all four strings at once? For making a bar chord? I have a lot of trouble with that. If I try to do very many other chords my fingers can't seem to reach everything....any suggestions? thank you again
It would be hard to describe here, and wo seeing your hand positions, but there is a way I recommend… (this is where I plug my paid chord guide 😜 heyinglewood.com/collections/downloads) But essentially you have to get your hand around so your knuckles are parallel with the neck… that would mean when you lay your finger on the fingerboard, it would be a somewhat natural motion, not awkward, bending and everything… But getting your left-hand around to be parallel like that, not choked up holding it the neck like it’s a baseball bat, is what can be uncommon unusual for people. I also suggest trying to make sure your thumb is about the centerline of the back of the neck. Imagine you were trying to touch your thumb to your middle finger, with as much space in between as possible in that area between your thumb and your middle finger, and then pin the neck in between. There should be some space, air, between your palm and the neck. Again, this is very difficult to describe in a UA-cam comment.!!
@HeyInglewood Thank you for taking the time to explain that.I will try this, and if I can't get it, maybe we will do a one-on-one visit. Thanks.
Sounds good Jim!
I have no idea what this is about as this just popped up scrolling through shorts but I love the positivity you give off :]
Ha! I’m glad to be of service! ☺️
