Blitzing Quarter Turn to Right in Quickstep!
We are Blitzing the Quarter Turn to Right in Quickstep!
In this Blitz we cover one of the first steps dancers will ever learn in the Quickstep, the Quarter Turn to Right. More common than the Quarter Turn to Left (Heel Pivot) the Quarter Turn to Right will often lead into the Progressive Chasse and form the basis for many dancers first easy going Quickstep Routines
So, the next time you're starting a Quickstep and need to get back to basics, don't forget the humble but powerful Quarter Turn to Right.

    Theres so many differant steps in jive and all the differant styles would you recomend learning one step at a time or learning a short sequence ?

    • @longstepsdancing
      @longstepsdancing День тому

      That's interesting, there aren't any more steps in Jive than most of the other dances, but because of the tempo of Jive, you dance through them faster, and so leaders are constantly needing to select figures. If you compare how many figures you dance in 90 seconds of Jive compared to 90 seconds of Rumba, you'll see what I mean. When it comes to figures vs. routines, there's no simple answer I'm afraid. It is, in my opinion, dependant on the dancers involved and why they dance. Some studios will exclusively teach routines to beginners, while others like ours take a mixed approach to figures and routines. Some leaders suffer from choice anxiety and simply cannot lead figures fast enough in something like a Jive, so learning just figures with no choreography is very hard for them. In this case, learning a simple routine is often easier, until they can develop their leading. The danger of this is that routines often become embedded and then dancers actually aren't leading and following they are just doing the same old steps they have done before, and this can turn into sloppy leading and following technique that is actually harder to remedy when dancers are ready to upgrade their routines and figures. It also causes problems when you don't have room or otherwise can't get your routine out on the floor... what do you do, just stop dancing and start again? That's never a nice feeling. My usual recommendation (in the dark knowing nothing about the dancers) is the learn a small amount of interchangeable figures, only 4 maybe 5 different moves that will all precede and follow each other, and then start by doing each move in succession 2 times each, so: Step 1 x2, Step 2 x2, Step 3 x2 etc... and then slowly but surely learn to do them in a different order, and don't tell the follower what that order is. This gives you the ground work for developing your leading and following, and keeps the dance fresh and fun on the dancefloor.

      Open finishes in Tango, and the Open Promenade figure, are such a boon to your Tangoing. With practice it allows the dancers to really dance to the music and provide light and shade of movement and avoid the too-staccato Tangos that can sometimes develop when dancers rely too much on stopping between figures.

    Lovely very similar to jive s drunken salor but differant rythm ? Lol

    • @longstepsdancing
      @longstepsdancing День тому

      That's an interesting observation, and you're kinda right. The Drunken Sailors in Jive are taken from (or based on) Bota Fogos in Samba. It's a classic case of figure stealing. The 1a2 in the Samba and QaQ of the Jive makes it an easy transition, much easier than converting Jive or Samba moves in to Cha Cha for example. However, Drunken Sailors in Jive are not very "leadable" and they don't have a universal definition of what they actually are. Many dancers will dance some variation of "Back-Replace" and then a Bota Fogo followed by a variation of "Back-Replace" and then another Bota Fogo. This gives the entire "Drunken Sailor" a step count of 10 and ensures the Bota Fogo part of the figure is replicated on each foot. But this is not the only way the figure can be danced, and it's in no way leadable without prior choreography. Actual Samba Bota Fogos on the other hand are entirely leadable, and can be performed in many ways and in many different holds. The travelling Bota Fogos are often thought of by theory buffs as the most basic (because of the closed hold), but they often aren't the ones first taught to students, because the backward Bota Fogo is more challenging.

      Hi Marguerite I watched the Opus 5 walkthrough, you're correct it is attributed to Russ Hesketh. It looks like a lovely dance, thought my personal preference at that speed would be to remove the shadow sections and just dance it like a Modern Waltz, but that's just me. With the exception of the shadow sections those figures and mini-sequences would be quite pretty when used in a Modern Waltz. Though certainly not a beginner dance, and I would expect not a sequence New Vogue dancers would find easy to dance without some measure of Modern Ballroom experience too. Thank you for sharing.

    What is the difference between a Cucaracha and a Cuban Rock?

    • @longstepsdancing
      @longstepsdancing 8 місяців тому

      Hi Tricia, that's a good question. There are 2 main differences between Cuban Rocks, and Cucarachas 1) Cuban Rocks do exactly that, they just rock. Wherever your feet are at the start of the figure, they don't move - you plant your feet and rock from 1 foot to the other. In Cucarachas you usually commence and conclude the figure with closed feet, and open your feet to take the step 1. 2) In Cuban Rocks each step is a complete weight transfer from one foot to the other. 100% of your weight is swapped 3 times, over the 2 3 4-1 count. In a Cucaracha, step 1 is a part weight step, that is only about 50% of your weight is transferred to the foot that "squashes the cockroach". This is what gives the Cucaracha action such unique qualities, particularly when used as part of a more complex figure. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching the video!

    Thank you. DO you have a video on progressive barn dance (also other progressives) , where (to my knowledge) the leader steps 3 steps backward to meet & dance with the next follower who steps 3 steps forward, & we all progress along the line of dance when we do the rotary chasse. Would you have a demonstration for this please? We have friends who don't do this, & we need to show them how to do it.

      Hey Charles, thank you for the comment. We have just recorded one especially for you. It's not due to come out for another couple of weeks (Thur 28th of Sep), but if you contact us via email, I'd be happy to send you an advanced copy to show your friends.

    Practice, practice, practice will be the order of the day. Oh and the heel turns too will be a focus. Love a challenge... aka the foxtrot!! The beast that it is to master. LOL

      Practice is the only thing for your Foxtrot. Heel Turns are always a challenge when learning this dance, but they are a dream when you perfect them.
