American Revolutionary War
It's easy to study how the strong defeat the weak - it's assumed in armed conflict. But how does the weak defeat the strong? Were they lucky or smart? It's examples like the American Revolutionary War that reveal the true art of war. www.seanmcfate.com

Peloponnesian War
Переглядів 14 тис.3 роки тому
Like World War I, the Peloponnesian War was a total war for the ancient Greeks; it was a death match. Although 2,400 years old, it has much to teach us about war and democracies that fight. Much changes in the world, but people do not. www.seanmcfate.com
War Without States? Warlords in Africa
Переглядів 5 тис.3 роки тому
Can there be wars without states? Such an idea befuddles the conventional warrior and the West's strategic paradigm. Yet it is increasingly common, from narco-wars in Latin America to wars in Africa. www.seanmcfate.com
Israel Hezbollah War 2006
Переглядів 73 тис.3 роки тому
Is this the future of war? The 2006 Lebanon War was a 33-day conflict fought between the Israeli armed forces and a non-state actor-Hezbollah-on the territory of a third state-Lebanon. This in itself creates strategic challenges that mark the changing character of modern warfare. www.seanmcfate.com

David Galula develops a clever strategy to defeat guerrillas, insurgents, and the Maoist strategy. But it does not look like "war" to the conventional warrior. The video also explains why US COIN failed in Iraq and Afghanistan. www.seanmcfate.com
Mao on How to Defeat the Strong

Clausewitz, Jomini, and the Utility of Force

Who Should Decide Grand Strategy?
Переглядів 2,9 тис.3 роки тому
Who decides? If war is politics by other means, then who should be the "decider" when it comes to grand strategy: the civilian or military authority? Democracies are proud of their civilian-military relationship, but the lines of authority are often nebulous and sometimes corruptible, leading to problems. www.seanmcfate.com
War, Victory and Grand Strategy

What is "Strategic Thought"?

Clausewitz’s philosophy on war is still broadly correct. However both he and Jomini were prisoners of their time (as are we all) The Russo-Ukrainian war has amply showed how warfare can change at the operational and tactical levels. At the political and strategic level, nuclear weapons will always be the elephant in the room. Everything now depends on the same criteria that pertained in the Cold War. 1) Is the deterrence credible 2) How high is the confidence that it WILL be used? I refer you to Herman Kahn. Okay, he was the epitome of a Cold War strategical thinker but his philosophy is regarded as ‘neo Clausewitzian’ - whatever that means…

Heigel was basically re-hashing the Socratic method. I’m amazed that so many people seem to think Heigel was an ‘original’ thinker.

Kautilya aimed for a unitary type state with decentralisation and local self within its provisions. His goal unlike more of Imperial Western type hegemony was in a protection and fostering of Dharma in the world through the unified state. Kautilya's strategy unlike Sun Tzu was more in building a state and making it flourish rather than just warfare. But to establish a state, u need warfare and that's where he gave the military and warfare strategies. There's something called, "AptāDharma" that is which is "adharma" bestowed during times to crisis or for greater nonle cause becomes "dharma" like u lie to Criminals if they ask someone's address u know. If u tell truth that becomes adharma instead. So the so-called "immoral strategies" given(considering there isn't ethics in warfare) is to destroy the adharmik rulers or corrupt, evil, oppressors and establish a state based on dharma or righteous conducts. So if u take immoral actions momentarily or temporarily for a future moral establishment there's nothing wrong.

If you note, this guy keeps bringing the Western writer in between to effectively undercut Kautilya, who had written his treatise much before any of the Western thinkers had written anything or were even civilized, which happened 2000 years ago with the invention of Christianity to control the pagans in Europe.

There were several thousand hellenes with the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae. The movie 300 is a comic book mostly wrong as history. There is a controversy over whether historical movies should strive to be as accurate as possible. I am behind accuracy, especially when the actual history is quite entertaining by itself (e.g. for me Braveheart is one of the worst movies ever made).

What a wonderfully sanitised version of events.... you miss or gloss over all the Israeli atrocities. September 16, 1982, Israel perpetrated a 43-hour massacre, killing an estimated more than 3,000 Palestinian women and children in Sabra and Shatila Refugee Camps in Southern Lebanon. The Palestinian men had left in an agreement that the Americans a multinational force would provide security. Ariel Sharon (later elected prime minister of Israel) oversaw the operation.

How exactly can one claim that Mao was _ever_ weak? The entire premise goes unexplained. I could see how he could be considered comparatively weak at certain points - much like the United States. But Mao had such a massive advantage in resources that only an absolute imbecile would claim he was weak (or the people who are just mindlessly repeating his propaganda with no regard for accuracy).
