Welcome to my channel about war. We must study war not to glorify it, but rather to wage it as efficiently as possible, minimizing suffering. For more about me or my books, go here: www.seanmcfate.com
American Revolutionary War
It's easy to study how the strong defeat the weak - it's assumed in armed conflict. But how does the weak defeat the strong? Were they lucky or smart? It's examples like the American Revolutionary War that reveal the true art of war. www.seanmcfate.com

Peloponnesian War
Переглядів 14 тис.3 роки тому
Like World War I, the Peloponnesian War was a total war for the ancient Greeks; it was a death match. Although 2,400 years old, it has much to teach us about war and democracies that fight. Much changes in the world, but people do not. www.seanmcfate.com
War Without States? Warlords in Africa
Переглядів 5 тис.3 роки тому
Can there be wars without states? Such an idea befuddles the conventional warrior and the West's strategic paradigm. Yet it is increasingly common, from narco-wars in Latin America to wars in Africa. www.seanmcfate.com
Israel Hezbollah War 2006
Переглядів 73 тис.3 роки тому
Is this the future of war? The 2006 Lebanon War was a 33-day conflict fought between the Israeli armed forces and a non-state actor-Hezbollah-on the territory of a third state-Lebanon. This in itself creates strategic challenges that mark the changing character of modern warfare. www.seanmcfate.com
T.E. Lawrence on Weaponizing Social Movements
Переглядів 3,2 тис.3 роки тому
The legendary "Lawrence of Arabia" explains how to fight a stronger enemy, and win. But it takes brains. According to Lawrence: "Guerrilla war is far more intellectual than a bayonet charge." www.seanmcfate.com
Galula on Counterinsurgency (COIN)
Переглядів 12 тис.3 роки тому
David Galula develops a clever strategy to defeat guerrillas, insurgents, and the Maoist strategy. But it does not look like "war" to the conventional warrior. The video also explains why US COIN failed in Iraq and Afghanistan. www.seanmcfate.com
Mao on How to Defeat the Strong
Переглядів 13 тис.3 роки тому
Mao is probably the most significant strategist since WWII, but is curiously ignored by the West, with tragic consequences. His strategy allows the weak to defeat the strong, and is used today. www.seanmcfate.com
Sun Tzu and the Power of Deception
Переглядів 9 тис.3 роки тому
“For to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.” Sun Tzu’s 2,500-year-old treatise The Art of War explains how to win wars before the first shot is fired. www.seanmcfate.com
Clausewitz, Jomini, and the Utility of Force
Переглядів 22 тис.3 роки тому
Arguably the most important war theorists in Western history. Often misread and misquoted, this lecture explains their core ideas, and why they have more in common than not. Their strategic legacy forms the DNA of U.S. and European strategic culture today. www.seanmcfate.com
Who Should Decide Grand Strategy?
Переглядів 2,9 тис.3 роки тому
Who decides? If war is politics by other means, then who should be the "decider" when it comes to grand strategy: the civilian or military authority? Democracies are proud of their civilian-military relationship, but the lines of authority are often nebulous and sometimes corruptible, leading to problems. www.seanmcfate.com
War, Victory and Grand Strategy
Переглядів 6 тис.3 роки тому
People often talk about strategy and victory without knowing what it is. Sometimes these people are in charge of making strategic decisions, resulting in long-term failure. This lecture explains the common pitfalls of bad strategy, and how to avoid them. www.seanmcfate.com
What is "Strategic Thought"?
Переглядів 6 тис.3 роки тому
Strategic thought is complex thinking. It’s not what we think but how we think. When it comes to strategy, knowing the right question to ask is more important than the answer. www.seanmcfate.com
"The New Rules of War" by Sean McFate
Переглядів 8 тис.4 роки тому
The US has the best military in the world, yet hasn't won a war since 1945. What's going on? We are unprepared for "Great Power Competition" and future wars. McFate's startling book explains how and why warfare has changed, and what we must do to win. www.seanmcfate.com An Economist "Book of the Year" and on West Point's Commandant's Reading List.
Clausewitz’s philosophy on war is still broadly correct. However both he and Jomini were prisoners of their time (as are we all) The Russo-Ukrainian war has amply showed how warfare can change at the operational and tactical levels. At the political and strategic level, nuclear weapons will always be the elephant in the room. Everything now depends on the same criteria that pertained in the Cold War. 1) Is the deterrence credible 2) How high is the confidence that it WILL be used? I refer you to Herman Kahn. Okay, he was the epitome of a Cold War strategical thinker but his philosophy is regarded as ‘neo Clausewitzian’ - whatever that means…
Heigel was basically re-hashing the Socratic method. I’m amazed that so many people seem to think Heigel was an ‘original’ thinker.
Is anyone preparing a huge war like me😂?

@seanmcfate826 can you start uploading again please? I can tell from your video history that your channel was a one-off from the pandemic, but your videos are great and I’m almost through them all. Would love to support more content!
Unfortunately it wasnt the Brits who suffered at Gallipoli, it was the ANZACs.
Not accurate
Clausewitz discounted military intelligence and that is said djring this presentstion. Interesting how Napoleon would scout the enemy and smoke Clausewitz' countrymen with superior intelligence.
Brilliant, from a scholar who shares the historical account in a responsible way!!
Fake news
This was so biased story. LOL
Kautilya aimed for a unitary type state with decentralisation and local self within its provisions. His goal unlike more of Imperial Western type hegemony was in a protection and fostering of Dharma in the world through the unified state. Kautilya's strategy unlike Sun Tzu was more in building a state and making it flourish rather than just warfare. But to establish a state, u need warfare and that's where he gave the military and warfare strategies. There's something called, "AptāDharma" that is which is "adharma" bestowed during times to crisis or for greater nonle cause becomes "dharma" like u lie to Criminals if they ask someone's address u know. If u tell truth that becomes adharma instead. So the so-called "immoral strategies" given(considering there isn't ethics in warfare) is to destroy the adharmik rulers or corrupt, evil, oppressors and establish a state based on dharma or righteous conducts. So if u take immoral actions momentarily or temporarily for a future moral establishment there's nothing wrong.
This was horrible. Your knowledge was vague and weak. This book is taught all over the world.
ZOG SHILL
Your binary animated script of Liberian history was cringe as usual. No mention of Firestone?
No France was in quantity and quality superior to Germany.
🇷🇺 has now the best armed forces and weaponary. America has lost military arms’ race.
Thays hilarious. Russia is doing what it did in ww2. Throwing bodies at the problem. Age old tactic. There is technological parity on the battlefield. The numbers are the main difference. Your statement is a load of horseshit Orc.

Israel is always a terrorist state. You are a biased hypocrite also
Dam, not gonna lie the Israelis were not cooking in this war. Glad they learned though
If you note, this guy keeps bringing the Western writer in between to effectively undercut Kautilya, who had written his treatise much before any of the Western thinkers had written anything or were even civilized, which happened 2000 years ago with the invention of Christianity to control the pagans in Europe.
Just read Seven Pillars. If he experienced even a tenth of what he describes he was still a great courageous man with incredible endurance.
There were several thousand hellenes with the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae. The movie 300 is a comic book mostly wrong as history. There is a controversy over whether historical movies should strive to be as accurate as possible. I am behind accuracy, especially when the actual history is quite entertaining by itself (e.g. for me Braveheart is one of the worst movies ever made).
This whole video sounds to me designed to subtly say israel didnt lose and just lost an informational war. Really? More than half the global mainstream media is in zionist hands, and you're saying this war was only an informational loss? What a load of horsesh.t.
I love your teachings but it breaks my heart that I can't download since I'm not using premium UA-cam.
What a wonderfully sanitised version of events.... you miss or gloss over all the Israeli atrocities. September 16, 1982, Israel perpetrated a 43-hour massacre, killing an estimated more than 3,000 Palestinian women and children in Sabra and Shatila Refugee Camps in Southern Lebanon. The Palestinian men had left in an agreement that the Americans a multinational force would provide security. Ariel Sharon (later elected prime minister of Israel) oversaw the operation.
great lectures! Thank you very much.
Title should be "a Zionist's perspective of the war in Libanon in 2006"
How so? The Zionist version is that the IDF crushed Hezbollah because they inflicted more casualties, and that the antisemtic UN stopped the brave boys of the Tzahal from pushing to the Litani - where did McFate say that in this video? It’s a good presentation
This was great. Studying this man now and next week for class. Subbed. Thanks for the effort here. 🤙🏽
😂😂
patent nonsense in the first 13 minutes - maybe a scholar of warfare but def not a historian! check Sir Martin Gilbert or the declaration of independence which invited all people of all faiths to co-exist in peace in Israel...it was the Arab states that waged war on Israel not the other way around as you state so emphatically and falsely! please issue an apology and rewrite your scipt!
To say should go out all and it makes since is literally the stupidest thing ive heard as youll bankrupt the county as well as have more enemy's then before that not even smart not even a little bit
lol i like how just like israel was like lets just get out i mean whats the point. lol not that they had armed restinces wiping the floor with them no it was not that lol its a very inaccurate way of telling history mate.
War. What is it good for?
Russia was a bad example
This is just a propaganda video in favour of Israel
FATE BROUGHT YOU HERE
👹🇮🇱👹🇮🇱🇮🇱👹👹👹🇮🇱
Oh grow up.
Go back to History class too much flaws and Jewish narrative
I did and this is still accurate.
tests the placidity of regular and irregular warfare concepts? bro this is word salad. you are extremely low IQ
So many inaccuracies in just the first 13 minutes that I just stopped there.
This is a biased video Pass
Hezbullah and hamas are alll cowards hiding behind civilians
Constipated😂
How exactly can one claim that Mao was _ever_ weak? The entire premise goes unexplained. I could see how he could be considered comparatively weak at certain points - much like the United States. But Mao had such a massive advantage in resources that only an absolute imbecile would claim he was weak (or the people who are just mindlessly repeating his propaganda with no regard for accuracy).
Show this to your landlord
What east European jews doing in the middle east colonizing Palestinian land in the first place!
China is winning using TikTok hahaha, genius!
I'm sure that most of the Indian who had commented here never read "Arthashastra". They were just acquainted with some popular folklore about Kotilya.
True man
Glad this got recommended!!
