    Hello ma’am. Loved your comprehensive guideline and advices for getting into OMFS. Though, I have a small confusion. Getting into OMFS in US, do I have to clear CBSE and USMLE both? Also, some guidelines for international students would be really helpful.

      The CBSE is a shorter version of the USMLE step 1 exam. You only take the CBSE exam to apply to residency. The USMLE exams have to be taken at every 6 year program, but this is after you are accepted into a program.

    Hey I was wondering that is the acceptance to the maxfax the same with other medical specialties? Like is there MD and international categories of applications ? Because from what i heard that you can’t apply unless you have a dds and since most of the international have bds and need 2 extra years to get their dds so does that mean they are equally accepted after getting dds ?

    • @learningomfs

      You need a DDS or DMD to apply that is correct. There are some programs that take international applications in the US. I'm not as familiar with the application process for foreign-trained applicants unfortunately.

      Hi! I just stumbled on this video, and want to answer why I feel I want to do OMFS and why 6-year. I am currently about to start D1, so I have a long time to decide haha. I personally am looking at more 6-year programs because of the MD behind my name, allowing me to make more money, and I have heard it allows you to do more than a 4-year certificate allows.

    • @MGC89

      Having an MD doesn’t make you make more money, I am an OMFS, having a MD allows you to have easier hospital privileges. Let’s say you were interested in doing a fellowisph after residency, having the MD helps you match into programs. The DDS versus DDS and MD has nothing to do with money. Getting the MD means that you have another degree, more loans as these 2 years of medical schools will not be paid for by your residency program. Hope this helps.

      @@MGC89 Great information! I did find a few residencies that pay for those two years now. I wasn't quite sure what the MD allowed for, but I have always wanted to get the MD regardless of pay. I think it would be helpful for certain cases to have easier hospital access as well. Would you recommend the full MD route, or just the 4-year residency? I have read that you receive more OMFS practice in 4-year as opposed to the 6-year residencies; would this be a benefit to the 4-year, that the 6-year doesn't have the luxary of?

    Hello! I need some advices/insights in this situation. 3 years ago I started medschool, but due to certain situation with the directors from my medschool I decided to change of careers and prioritize myself, so I changed to a DMD program (I also studied architecture in between but we don’t talk about that). I’ve already been 1 year in DMD, so I have 3 years left and I have a really good scholarship. Problem/confusion comes here, as of lately I’ve been really tempted to go back to medschool since the people I had problems with are leaving the school (and I feel a bit pressured cause if I want to do the change this semester it must be before January and I wouldn’t be able to revalidate any subject and I’d possibly loose my scholarship). To add a bit more of context, I really don’t dislike dental school (I actually think we have a better life balance than my friends in medschool) since we basically take the same subjects the first 2 years, but sometimes I don’t feel passionate at all about dental subjects although it’s too soon to say (ig? I still have 3 years left). So rn I have 2 options: 1. Stay in DMD and pursue a residency in Oral and Maxilofacial surgery (OMFS); in my country it is a 4 year program but I’d try to look the possibility of doing it in the U.S where there are 2 modalities (which seems hard but not impossible): • 6 years modality: You get a M.D title apart from the OMFS title. • 4 years modality: You only get OMFS title. 2. Go back to medschool, although I wouldn’t have clear which specialty I’d like to do since I think it’s something most of the time you discover while you rotate on the different services. I know all the up and downs from medschool and what it means to be there. I find interesting what OMFS do, and there are very interesting fellowships too, that’s why I’m a bit confused since both options offer interesting things that align with my interests. Another thing to consider, the chief of the DMD career from my uni has offered me to do some rotations in the OMFS service from a hospital and to shadow some OMFS. Although, in the other hand an attending physician offered me something similar but in the orthopedics service. A lot of people have told me that the wise choice would be to pursue OMFS, but other have told me to follow my “instincts” (in this case most of the time they tell me to go back to medschool). And as I said, since I find both choices interesting it’s been kinda hard and stressing. I know that I’m literally drowning with a glass of water and that it may sound stupid/chilidish; but ever since I had the problem I mentioned in medschool I’ve felt that my life has been in “standby” and I really hate that feeling since I don’t feel I’m progressing towards something and I want to fix that. I’d appreciate your opinion, and your content is both great and inspiring! Your channel was like a bottle in the dessert for me hahaha.

      I think the tough part is when you have the option and ability to do one or the other, it opens endless possibilities in terms of what your specialty or subspecialty will be. It can get quite overwhelming. In the US, there is close to 100+ subspecialties of medicine that further subdivide the main specialties. In dentistry there are 12 specialties. It is impossible to get exposure to everything in medicine and likewise everything in dentistry while you are still in school. So there's always a chance that as you advance you find something you like a little more than the last thing. And if I told you to go out there and shadow as much as you can all the specialties available to you, that's unrealistic and each shadowing opportunity is only a small glimpse of the real deal. Remember that medicine and dentistry are related, they are both careers in healthcare. I think what I'd do in your situation is make a list of broad things you are good at pertaining to work combined with things that interest you in general (example: OR procedures vs clinical procedures, vs no procedures, looking at microscopy, importance of no/limited call shifts, pediatric vs geriatric vs general populations, research, looking at imaging like X-rays/CT/MRI, etc.) . And then compare that to things you really don't want to do (like parts of the body or systems that don't interest you, standing for extended periods of time, working in the dark, working weekends, being in an extrovert vs introvert position, etc). This will narrow possible career options by a lot and hopefully point you in the right direction. I don't believe in one perfect career choice for everyone; I think every person can be happy and successful in many careers; the grass is always greener sort of thing. One last thing to consider- at least in the US it is frowned upon from a residency/fellowship perspective to switch between different schooling pathways, especially if done several times. This could affect chances of matching to a more desirable speciality in either field.

      @@learningomfs Yes, I agree that it’s virtually impossible to experience all of the medical specialties and sub specialties. So what I tried is what you said, I made a list of the things that aligned with my interests (both professional and personal) and that’s where OMFS turned out to be an interesting option. At least in my country, it’s one of the best medical specialties in terms of work/life balance and it has multiple applications. That was important for me, or at least that’s how I perceived it. Also, there are interesting fellowships for it and a lot of opportunities in private sectors. Despite OMFS being a really good option, general medicine still interests me, although I really don’t know what specialty I’d like to do in that case. So you can say that OMFS gets a +1? “Bad thing” is that, as far as I know, in my country there’s no dual degree for OMFS; so you only get to have your DMD title and your OMFS title (which still is great), but the MD is always a plus. Also, the fact that you rotate in general surgery is also attractive. You think the dual degree is that important? I don’t know how difficult is for international students to match into OMFS in the US, but I assume it’s very difficult. For the last part, I agree that there’s no perfect career, but I’d like to be in one that fulfills me (I know OMFS would do that). Although something that “worries” me, is that a lot of the procedures that OMFS do are done by plastic and ENT surgeons; so I guess that’s where personal skills come in. And yeah, I’m not surprised that changing careers can affect your chances of matching (since it can be seen as a sign of not being able to commit); at least here as long as you pay nothing happens, lol.

    • @learningomfs
      @learningomfs 3 місяці тому

      @@pacopadilla5297 OMFS is a great career choice, no doubt. There is overlap with our plastics and ENT colleagues but each specialty also has procedures that make it unique over the others. I don't believe an MD is necessary. I chose an MD program because I thought I would go into fellowships and it would be easier (which can be true in some instances but not all). Right now I'm leaning more towards dentoalveolar procedures and had I known that, I likely would have gone the 4 year route. The scope of practice of a 4-year and 6-year trained OMFS in the US is exactly the same. There are a few programs in the US that accept foreign applicants, and unfortunately you're right in that it is tough to get a spot.

    • @pacopadilla5297
      @pacopadilla5297 3 місяці тому

      @@learningomfs I really appreciate your insights! I’ve been reading a lot of papers in general about misconceptions about OMFS and how a lot of specialists refer procedures to neurosurgeons, ENT, ortho or plastics that are/could be done by OMFS (so that kinda discouraged me a bit, not gonna lie). But at the same time I’ve found a lot of things about OMFS importance and how modern plastic surgery originated from OMFS. Would you consider that, for example, the MD would be necessary for the head and neck oncology fellowship? Also, I know I already said this, but would you recommend me to keep pursuing OMFS (I know that this comes down to personal preferences but both my personal and professional interests align with OMFS) and how do you see the future outlook for this specialty? Again, I’m really grateful.

Also, does acquiring a dds from America increases your chances of being accepted into an omfs residency program? Lastly if you could, can you name some good omfs programs that cover a broad scope and/or more head and neck or craniofacial. I’m sorry the question is so big, I just really wanna see my chances in America. Thanks in advance!

      I would say your chances of getting into an OMS residency program would be improved if you have a DDS/DMD from a US school. There are many residencies that are excellent and cover a broad scope. I'd say most Midwest and Southern programs will get you the experience you're looking for (but I'm biased because that's where I applied).

I picked those that had on call rooms to stay in or in a city where I knew people I could live with. I only paid for flights and for the car ride to the hospital.
