Setup Instructions for ProtonMail's Two Factor Authentication (2FA) using Yubikey 5
Setup instructions for ProtonMail’s Two-Factor Authentication using Yubico’s Yubikey 5 NFC along with the Yubico Authenticator application on an Android/iPhone devices. I have also added the instruction for setting up a spare key within this video description. Below you will find both the PDF written instructions for setting up Yubikey for ProtonMail and the how to create a spare key instructions.
PDF written instructions for Yubikey on Proton Mail:
www.dropbox.com/s/uvidsopx1vn3ybc/Setup%20of%20ProtonMail%20Yubikey%205.pdf?dl=0
Creating a spare Yubikey (backup) with Yubico Authenticator App:
1.) Before registering key #1 (see video instruction), take a photo of the QR code and for the
service you will be using (ProtonMail, Facebook, or etc) .Then email/download the photo
to a secure file on your computer.
2.) Register key #1 (enter the 6-digit code when requested)
3.) Using the photo you took earlier, scan the QR code with the Yubico Authenticator App.
Then scan key #2.
You will now be able to use both keys on that sight. (Note: this may not work with all services)

      Goto Settings, then select "Go to settings". Then select "Account and password" from the menu on the left. It is on this page.

    Hello, I followed this tutorial and everything worked fine. Then I came back to my protonmail a few months later and It will not let me login. The code my yubikey generates does not work. Any ideas?

      Whether or not you are using more than one ProtonMail account, ensure that you are using the correct login credentials (email address & password). If you did use more than one...you will need to assign each account a separate name in the authenticator app in order to differentiate between the two . If you saved the Recovery Codes during the setup process you should be able to use them to recover your email account. Hopefully this information helps! I have also added instruction for adding a backup Yubikey to account incase the first Yubikey is lost (see the SHOW MORE section of the video description above).

    So what's the difference between this and the classic 2fa on authy or Google auth?

    Thanks. Please clarify if it is possible to perform your ProtonMail 2Factor Authentication setup without involving the use of a cell phone? My goal is to only access ProtonMail from my desktop PC using my Yubikey without QR codes or a mobile phone getting into the picture. Is this possible? And will eliminating the Yubico Authenticator app and substituting it with the Yubico Manager app help me in only using my desktop PC?

      You can download the PC/Linux/iOS version for your computer at the following link: www.yubico.com/products/services-software/download/yubico-authenticator/#download_here Using Windows 10 you can scan the QR code on the PC screen without the use of a cell phone. The instructions for that are at the following link under the "Setting Up Your Yubikey in Yubico Authenticator for Desktop": support.yubico.com/support/solutions/articles/15000006419-using-your-yubikey-with-authenticator-codes#configure Hopefully this answered your question. If you have any issues with the instructions let me know and I will try to help you out.

    how I can recover my two factor if I lost my device ?? I have the recovery codes! thank you

    • @old_guytech1456
      @old_guytech1456 4 роки тому

      You use one of the recovery codes instead of the Yubico Authenticator codes that is generated by the app. If I understand correctly, the recovery code can only be used once.

      @@old_guytech1456 Is it possible to reset the Recovery Codes or do they run out FOREVER with your account?

    • @old_guytech1456
      @old_guytech1456 3 роки тому

      @@waltz9230 I do not have direct knowledge of how to do that; however, if you need a new set of recovery codes you can most likely remove and then reinstall. If you are using the Yubico Authenticator remove whatever app from the list and reinstall it. That should issue a new set of recovery codes. You can also email Yubico and they should respond fairly quickly if this answer did not help.

      The master Key

    Thanks. Your video was extremely helpful because the instructions on the yubico website are horrible. I'm also unhappy that yubikey is not supported natively in the protonmail's app (like it is in gmail). So if you agree, perhaps jump here (protonmail.com/support/knowledge-base/two-factor-authentication) and leave a request to add native support for yubikey in protonmail. And request that they add in multiple 2FA factors so that we have a plan B if one method breaks (i.e. I lose my key or my phone)
