Mountain biking is a massive part of my life and has been for over 30 years, when I started racing my Klein Attitude back in 1990 (hence my channel art!). I've experienced so many amazing locations, learned great skills, techniques & tips but the biggest thing is, that I've found out that riding my bike in the great outdoors directly improves my mental health and quality of life, all of which I aim to share through my videos, for you all.
UA-cam is an awesome platform, so please help to support the channel by watching, commenting, sharing & subscribing.

How to ride any MTB trail for the first time!
In this video, I attempt to share How to ride any trail for the first time, and the trail of choice is the infamous A470 line at Bike Park Wales and its challenging/qualifying feature, using my PRE-RIDE RE-RIDE FREE-RIDE method, which starts so well with a not-so-great ending, was this trail above my ability? Am I punching above my weight? Or is this the trail progression I'd been looking for?

Gd ride mate still. Need to progress with my jumps but you did sa gd job on that trail
Thanks Stephan, I really appreciate it 👍. It’s one of those trails that is initially quite intimidating but once you complete it once it starts getting addictive 😜. Good luck with your jumping and thanks for watching 🤜🤛
Nice one 👍
Thank you 🤜🤛
My son had his first trip to BPW at the weekend and I think that A470 was his favourite - but he's far braver than I am when it comes to jumps etc
I’ll bet he had an amazing day, it’s such a great venue. I still remember my first time there, and still get the same vibes on every visit. Thanks for watching 🤜🤛
Good work on the 1st jump. Try to find a clinic for jumping and that will give you more confidence hitting the bigger ones
Cheers buddy, luckily I’ve got Daryl Brown who lives down the road and the Bull track 20 minutes away where I can follow your advice 👌🤜🤛.
Have you ridden zut alors ? Just wondering how the qualifier on a470 compares to the gaps on that trail .
Sadly, on this visit, I ran out of time to get fully acquainted with Zut Alors but looking at it briefly, the gaps look similar if slightly larger but quite doable provided the right trail speed is met, I reckon it’s more about achieving a flow state so that’ll be the challenge for my next visit 👌. Cheers for watching 🤜🤛
@ ahh ok . I’ve cleared first couple on Zut alors and have a470 to try at end of month . The qualifier looks huge to me , fair play to you making it look easy 👍
Great video! Very relatable, I hope one day in the near future to visit Bike Park Wales and get you to show me around 🤘🏽
Thanks so much 👍. Sounds like a plan, if not already, join our facebook group to stay updated for group ride dates, would be great to meet up 🤜🤛
Wrecker or insurgent? Pick one
My choice would probably be the MX wheel Insurgent👌
Great video! Haven’t been to this bike park yet but looks awesome!
It is awesome for sure 👌. There are trails to suit every ability and so many to choose from + they’re doubling the size of the park over the next few years! You’ve gotta go, just book in advance. Thanks for watching 🤜🤛
an atherton bike would definitely be my dream bike 🤩would you say the 170 is poppy and playful?
It’s also my dream machine too👌. I’m a very proud bike parent 🤣. Yes, it’s seriously lively, more so than I anticipated! It really comes alive the more you push it and it thrives on speed with so much grip that it’s hard to get it unstuck! This is one special beast 🥰. Thanks for watching 🤜🤛
@@UPHILLPHILL thanks for that Phill! I really really want one haha thx so much bro! Subscribed :)
@AJ_Brimson cheers, I really appreciate your support ✊. Atherton Bikes have regular demo days and the next one is in December I highly recommend it, it’s an experience like nothing else: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/atherton-bikes-christmas-demo-dyfi-bike-park-tickets-1089921958919?aff=erelexpmlt&_gl=1*e6jhx7*_up*MQ..*_ga*ODcwNTk0MDA1LjE3MzI5NTM5Mzk.*_ga_TQVES5V6SH*MTczMjk1MzkzOS4xLjAuMTczMjk1MzkzOS4wLjAuMA..
What’s the reason to pedal such a bike when you can get an e-bike for the same amount of money?
Good question and one I’ve been asked before. Simply put, personally, I don’t need an EMTB yet and I am planning my next bike being one👌. I wanted a bike that fitted all my riding requirements (and there were lots!) that no EMTB could fulfil for the cost. Yes, I could have got an EMTB for the same/similar price but it would have been a compromise and so a waste of time and money for me. This satisfies every single requirement and more and when I have the available funds, an EMTB will be looked into. Thanks for watching and for your comment 👍
Interesting bit on the flat feet in berms( I assume level In relation to the wall of the berm?) I was told by another well known coach to drop the outside foot in a berm. I do that to this day although I’m aware the standard advice is level feet so now it’s more of a weighting rather than fully dropped. It also depends on the angle of the berm. A shallow berm will need more of a dropped outside foot. Good video!
Hey, I fully agree as I was told similar advice and as you say, going level or dropping the outside foot is totally dependent on many different factors like entry speed, type/shape/tightness and material types of the berms the list goes on! But for me personally, staying flat with the feet/cranks made a night/day difference in the fast/banked type berms we were practicing with. Thanks for watching and commenting 🤜🤛👍
Lovely stuff buddy 😃 you just made me want to ride all of these 😃🤙
This is the comment that fuels my passion for UA-cam, thank you so much 🤜🤛. I look forward to meeting/riding with you one fine day 👌.
@UPHILLPHILL yes mate looking forward to do it 🤙😃
What methods do you use for 1st time trail progression?
Mint video mate. Was a cracking day. Mind them keys next time 😂😊
Cheers, dude! It certainly was an awesome day, even after my forgetful moment! 😳. (Thanks for the quality footage)
Good video, enjoyed it. You've given me some ideas for my next visit
Thanks so much for watching and commenting, I hope you have an epic next visit 🤜🤛
Great vid one of the best" perspective " type vids i have seen, shows the trails well at real world speeds.
Thank you Scotty👍. I really appreciate your support, what is your favourite trail?
What are your thoughts? Which trails are your favourite? Is BPW the best UK bike park?
I'm gonna have to say currently I love hot stepper, snakebite Cole not dole but wish it was longer.
Hot Stepper for sure 👌
Very cool... is this Xfiles Friston Forest?
Yes it is. Well spotted 👍
@UPHILLPHILL ahh cool... its my local trails... always roding that trail....
@dazzaemtbchannel4756 likewise, it’s my usual starting point after a nice warm up, give me a shout if you happen to see me 🤜🤛
Another great video
Thanks Will, always appreciate your support dude🤜🤛
would have been nice to see some sort of faster riding. instead of just climbs and technical slow riding.
Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, the X1 is only capable of a maximum speed of 15mph, so it doesn’t do “fast”. My aim for this video was to capture my first owner experience with this amazing flying camera. I did not purchase it for speed, instead, it fulfilled my requirements for alternative angles and perspectives of the trails rather than just POV. Your request, however, will be satisfied as I have just received the upgraded version so watch this space 😉👍.
Thank you. Just competed my service. Very helpfull. I noticed the green ring was not on when you re assembled? I put it on anyway.. Cheers
Hey, thanks so much for watching and for your wonderful comment 👍. You did the correct thing by refitting the green internal seal, I did actually fit it but the footage of that part was sadly corrupted so I was unable to document it annoyingly! Great spot and I really appreciate your feedback. Enjoy your smooth bouncing 🤜🤛.
Hey, just wondering how much it would cost and how fast can it go ( what is the max speed it can follow ) thanks :)
Hey there 👋. The cost will largely depend on where you are located, in the UK it’s currently £395 on Amazon. Its max speed is 15mph, which I’ve found covers most situations I want for filming b-roll shots, I’ll be looking into a more advanced device for faster and more cinematic content soon though 😉. I’ve included links in the description that will help. Thanks for watching 👍
They have introduced a new model HoverAir X1 Pro Max which over doubles the speed of the original model. The new X1 Pro Max reaches a speed of 37 mph on a 15 minute battery while shooting video in 8k. This model will run you around $900 USD
@noknownsubstance4206 you are absolutely correct cheers 👍 and I have just started testing and setting one up. I took delivery of mine a few days ago and went for the ProMAX + ski combo. Thanks for watching 🤜🤛
@@UPHILLPHILL Awesome! I will be looking forward to your content as I just purchased the HoverAir X1. I absolutely love it! Will be purchasing the X1 Pro Max in the near future, for now the X1 will do what I need it and perhaps introduce me to content creation. Got it at an amazing price with 3 batteries, so I'm more than happy with it. Although I would enjoy the new features of the new model, I'm more than happy with it.
Hi. I have a question. Did you have to register this Drone with the FFA in order to be able to post videos in You Tube and Monetizen? Did yopu have to take the test? Thanks!!
Hi 👋. I’m based in the UK but I think the rules are different with regard to the weight of the device being under 250g which requires a basic operating licence but I’d recommend checking it out for your area to be completely safe. This is device also quite different with regard to the fact that it is classed as an autonomous flying camera that has a very close operating range to its user/point of origin, very different to the capabilities of a DJI for example. Thanks for watching and for your comment 👍
Mate has one of these. I tried it out and thought it was a great piece of kit, and then i tried the DJI Neo! Longer flight times, better in stronger winds and the tracking is superb. The fact that i can use the phone as an audio source without the rotor noise, and my mini 4 pro controller to fly it is the icing on the cake.
I’d agree that the Neo definitely has advantages over the X1 but the X1 also has the voice capture feature via phone and I use a Bluetooth mic connected to my iPhone so I don’t have to hold it, which works a treat. The Neo kinda sits in the middle of the X1 and the X1 ProMAX (soon to be available). Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated 🤜🤛.
sounds like the best to get 😀
IMO, for myself it’s great 👍.
@UPHILLPHILL I am totally fed up with not having the cover when I'm on my bike 😑 looking forward to testing out one, if I can convert the wife 😂🤣
Just bought one of these. Can’t wait to try it out on my rides.
The follow mode gave a good prospective of how steep the trail was! This is probably the best video I have seen on a MTB channel. Great job my friend!!
Wow, sound praise indeed, thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed it! Very much appreciated 🤜🤛
Interesting video, I've been thinking of something like this for my sporting (cycling/kayaking) and general photography. Your video has encouraged me to explore this area further.
Honestly, this little gadget is so impressive. I’ve used it on family holidays as well and it’s so reliable + surprisingly robust. I’d recommend getting extra batteries as flight time is limited but easily increased by a couple of extras. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, it’s really appreciated 🤜🤛
Friston doesn’t look that dry and dusty at the moment 😂 Interesting bit of kit for sure 👌
You’re absolutely correct, it’s a bit of a slop fest now!🤣. Thanks for watching and for your comment, much appreciated 🤜🤛
Great video mate. Which model is the one you got? It’s pretty impressive.
Thanks so much 👍. This is my current standard X1 (there’s a link in the description to the exact model) however, in the not too distant future I’ll be looking at an upgrade, so watch this space 😉.
Great video, definitely heading out onto this trail!!!
Thanks for watching, Jim, enjoy your ride. 🤜🤛
Great video, definitely heading out onto this trail!!!
Thanks Jim, really appreciate it. Enjoy the ride👍
Still not done these yet. If ya see this message Phill gimme a call as mite look at doing this on Sunday n wanna ask you about it. Looks mint
Hey Phill, we did this the day after ( Saturday ) I saw you at Dyfi on the Friday. The same route you too as well. Had to walk very carefully around some massive Bulls half way up 😂
Yeah dude🤜🤛. Hope you had better luck with the weather? And those bulls🤣. I’m planning to return for another go at the summit with my drone in better weather 😉.
Thanks Phil very helpful. I’m looking to get my first bike computer for rides like this. Do you rate the edge 530?
Absolutely love it. I took a gamble on Amazon as it was on a deal and I’m blown away with it tbh. Once you have a grasp on how it works you’ll be glad you bought it. The 830 is basically the same only touch screen but as I ride in the UK and all the weather throws at me, I decided to opt for the hassle of button pressing + it was cheaper 👌. I’ve put a link in the description to the Amazon page where I purchased mine. Good luck and thanks for watching 🤜🤛
Used to come here all the time as a teenager, now in my 30s and went back last year with my lad and his school and I had forgotten how steep the climbs were 😂, fair play to you for getting up them on a normal bike!
Cheers Ant👍. It’s such a lush place and so good that you can share your experiences with your lad, it’s exactly how my Dad introduced me to the mountains and I’ve been in love with them ever since. Thanks for watching dude🤜🤛🏴✊
Are the trails open?
As it’s not a bike park, they don't really close unless they are conducting forestry work. My visit was a couple of months ago now so it’s worth connecting with a local Afan group possibly on facebook for up to date info. Cheers for watching 🤜🤛
Good to see people riding full busy ...loads miss the last section (the best)..part out
It’s such a quality trail and quite addictive 👌. Cheers for watching 🤜🤛
@@UPHILLPHILL about 15 mins away is wylie ...my local place to ride ...great trails there
Another venue on my list 👌
Great content Phil i live a mile away from the trails in Rogerstone usually use the canal to get them. If you stay on the fire track road you can get to Twmbarlm and ride across the top of the mountain to Cwmbran were i was brought up, we are literally spoilt for trails in Wales which are beautiful and thats coming from a roadie but im finding mtb more enjoyable.
Same here man, I live in Bettws but can find a trail to take me anywhere I need to 👊🏾
Cheers dude🙏🏻. I’m absolutely addicted to Wales, the trails, scenery, people and everything about the place, always has me wanting more! I’m 4-5hours away and head there whenever I can. Can’t wait to return for more quality rides. Thanks so much for watching and for your comment. 🤜🤛🏴✊
What the hell is this! I cant believe it....... a ride in sunshine!?! Nice video keep them comming.

I have a Wreckoning, I’m also called Phil and I also live near Friston forest! Haha.
No way! We should meet up for a Friston ride and we’ll then be “full-Philled” 🤣. Cheers for watching dude🤜🤛
@@UPHILLPHILL haha sounds good! I’m about to turn my Wreckoning into a mullet.
Such a lovely, and also FANTASTIC video again, Phil. 🤩 You are producing great content that shares a real mountain biking experiences. This is especially true with you showing the “Push-up” a real consequence of MTB, 😊 sheep on the trails, (you can’t park there) 😉 and that as skilled as you are, you still show some “Whoopsie-Daisey” moments and some occasional “Wibbly-Wobbly” ones. 🙌🏼 I even LOVE you showing the scenery, as that’s also a reality, yes, we love to ride and descend, but taking time to appreciate our surroundings is also just as special and part of the ride. 😊 Such a BRILLIANT 🤩video as it even shows that with great experience and skill as you have, these things can happen. That’s what makes your content so relatable. 🤜🏼🤛🏼 Thank you for another great video, and Happy Trails, Good Sir! 🤙🏼
Thank you so much for your awesome and supportive comments. I truly love this incredible sport and the people that I have the opportunity to meet and interact with. Being able to share my experiences is all part of what makes me tick and of course I’m still learning every minute that I’m on my bike and in front of the editing screen. Cheers buddy and see you soon hopefully 🤜🤛✊
Thanks Phil that was a great review. Looking forward to riding it this week hopefully. All the best Brett.
Cheers Brett, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my video👍. Have a fantastic ride, hope you enjoy it as much as I do✊
Hi Phill, Great video. I will be there next week, pitch 39. Solo camper and looking to visit for mainly jet aircraft on the Mach Loop, and of course some landscape photography in and around the local area. I will do some video......
Hey Steve👋. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video👍. I'm also a solo camper and I watched x5 F15 Eagles and x3 F35's doing multiple circuits of the Mach loop from the vantage point of Dyfi Mountain bike park in Pantperthog. Such an epic location for so many activities! Hope you have a fantastic time at the ⛺️site and the Mach loop 🛩.
@@UPHILLPHILL Thanks!! What was your pitch number? I am on 39 unless I choose to change it when there's, so says Carolyn!!!!
I was on pitch 36👌
this looks fantastic, I'm seeing Daryl on Thursday. Can't wait.
You’re gonna have such a great day 👌. Enjoy, learn lots and thanks for watching 🤜🤛
Personally as far as the South Downs are concerned I like Friston, but I think there's better riding around Whiteways (Arundel) and QE country park.
Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll have to try them out 👍. Cheers for watching 🤜🤛
Oh yeah. This bike does rip. To be honest it’s not flickable as a smaller travel and shorter angle head tube bike would be. I ride in Northern California and it took me a while to get used to the geometry of this bike. It is more aligned to true downhill trails. But, with some practice it is exceptional on tighter trails. As Evil describes it, it is a bike park bike. Having owned a true DH bike, I would say that this is a bike that can handle both enduro and downhill trails. I, in fact use mine as more of a trail and enduro bike
I would also add that this bike climbs like a non suspension bike. And, the rear suspension has an unlimited feel. It is amazing.
Yep, you’ve summed this rig up spot on! It’s a very capable beast indeed 👌
Agreed 👍. I remember saying to my buddy that it climbed like my hardtail!
Great aren't they😊
Oh yeah 🙌
still waiting mine. 12 weeks away …….😂😂😂
Stay strong✊, I feel your pain but it’s all going to be Soooo worth it 👌. Thanks for watching 🤜🤛.
The only issue is that we are not going to be able to spot the T-Rex lurking around the tent, apart of that I thing the tent I f k ING awesome ❤
Thanks for watching 👍. As for the T-Rex, the official advice is to stay completely silent and motionless as they apparently have terrible eyesight and hearing! 🤜🤛
Saw another UA-camr with one. It looks like such a cool for me and tool for you lol. But as a cross country cyclist. These videos would be boring. If the drones did 360. I would probably do it then.
It’s a great little gadget for the bonus/additional B roll kinda footage that allows the viewer to see a different view/aspect of the area. It’s not as fast as I’d like so I will be looking at a faster drone soon. Cheers for watching 🤜🤛
The trails look great, look forward to going down them with you when I can get some time 😀
Can’t wait for it buddy, you’ll love the climbing too🤣.
